The Scotch Game is a very useful chess alternative for the Ruy Lopez that usually takes place with the first 2 moves. We will analyze the Scotch Game's main lines and go over some of the key concepts that you should know when playing this game either as white or black.

I realize you were just giving a basic overview, but after Black's Bc5 and White plays Nxc3, Black has an option other than the immediate recapturing at c3 with either the b or d-pawn - Qf6, threatening mate on f2. Then Black has third option to recapture at c6. But, still it's probably best to recapture with a pawn. But, for those who don't like doubling their pawns, this is an option.
@chesswebsite
@chesswebsite 15 лет назад
Great question. White can respond to e5 with f4, now forcing black to move his queen away from protecting the c7 pawn. Once the queen moves white can play Nxc7, attacking the king and rook. Hopefully this helps. Thanks for checking out the vid.
@chesswebsite
@chesswebsite 15 лет назад
You're exactly correct ani19bd. I just went over the main line where white captures with his knight, but like you said, white can sacrifice the pawn on d4 for rapid development with moving bishop to c4.
@chesswebsite
@chesswebsite 15 лет назад
It will definitely bring chaos. I think sacrificing your bishop for a pawn is good if you can really continue to apply pressure to the king and eventually overextend the king or win further material. I think that is tough in this situation for black and so I usually would not take on f2.

I'm not sure I understand why white is so much better at 5:40 - it seems to me that black is doing just fine, as he is up a pawn however down in development - the game looks pretty unclear (especially as white has the doubled pawns on c2/c3) After 0-0 for white, can you please suggest how white may obtain a clear advantage after black plays along the lines of a6 + d6?
@williamburch1779

A great opening ! Since I began learning chess (about a year ago) I always used the Italian game(Giuoco Piano variation) with white and it often led to quite boring games. Now, with the Scotch, I just have so much more space to attack. But I doubt that it would set any problems for an experienced player on a longer time control....

Around #t=4m55s , you might want to add that the reason white can't simply play: 7...Qxg2 8. Nxc7+ Kd4 9. Nxa8 Qxh1+ and then trade queens, is because of 7... Qxg2 8. Bf3! Now the queen has to move, and black can fork and take rook.

It's not pawn against queen at that point. The queens are traded off and THEN you are losing the e5 pawn. That's called being "down the exchange" thus the more desirable move would be to trade the queens off by recapturing with the king and not the knight so you're not losing more material than you have to.

Looks like black queen to f6 is gold for a Scotch opening. Pins dark square white bishop, threatens checkmate with bishop on c5, and slows development of pawns because of threat of check on h4.
@chesswebsite
@chesswebsite 14 лет назад
@zzzzzzzzzz098 he would lose his pawn on the e file. Most players would choose to take with the king instead of losing material and losing a tempo with their knight. Even though not being able to castle is a bad thing, much worse to lose material and a developmental tempo.

on the last line, the guy doesn't even explore Qf6, threatening mate on f2, which wins the knight without destroying pawn structure... >_> it's like a really obvious variation for the games I've played against real people if they bring out their dark bishop like that, they're going to be bringing out their queen, not recapturing with pawns.

Yes, that is why 4. Nxc6 is weak after 3... Bc5. No matter what White does about the mate threat, black can give him some sort of weakness. This is why I play 3...Bc5 as black, and why I won't play 4. Nxc6 as white. 4. Bd3 is much better.

The correct response from my point of view here would be: Bishop to e3, developing another piece and defending the threatened Knight... Best move for white after that is to simply castle. I'm not saying I know the lines or have planned moves after that, but looking at it the board from whites point of view I wouldn't mind playing it out. My king's castle'd, Black has his queen out into play.... possibly getting attacked, and he's probably going to lose tempo by trying to castle himself.... Qf6 isn't a blunder, and it keeps things equal.... but if I'm white it's a move I'm going to try and take advantage of at some point.

Ed Schillenger Maybe my example isn't the best way for black, check out 5. ...Qf6 6.Qd2 dxc6 7.Nc3 and then 7. ...Qe7 looks very good for black. White has a problem with the bishop on c1, and has to move the queen too. So after all it's a sharp game with good possibilities for both sides. On fast games you can castle queenside after white has castled and that is very annoying.

Not being able to castle when the queens are off the board is not always a weakness. Because the queens are off, the un-castled king does not need so much protection and can take shelter on squares like c7. In rare cases, an un-castled king can be advantageous because it can be brought more easily into the center of the board during the endgame than it would with a wall of pawns in front of it.
