It's hard to overstate how iconic this scene is. People simply weren't ready for it in the '70s. Audiences were beyond horrified.

How the two Vietnamese girls reacted, is how Americans reacted when this came out. We have become so desensitized to horror movies, it seems funny to some now but no one was laughing in 1979.

That's a valid point; as humans, we work within our means and this is what Ridley had to work with. Considering CGI didn't exist, this was his Jaws.

My Mom took me to see Alien in theater one slow Sunday evening, thinking it was going to be like Star Wars. The face-hugger scene darned near gave her a heart attack; the chest-buster scene had her dropping everything (popcorn, soda, etc.,) and running for the door. She sat in the car in the parking lot waiting for me while I watched the rest of the movie.

Dan O’Bannon put his finger on the problem: what has to happen next is the creature has to get on the ship in an interesting way. I have no idea how, but if we could solve that, if it can't be that it just snuck in, then I think the whole movie will come into place. In the middle of the night, I woke up and I said, "Dan I think I have an idea: the alien screws one of them ….. it jumps on his face and plants its seed!" And Dan says, “Oh my god, we've got it, we've got the whole movie.” -Screenwriter Ron Shusett [Wikipedia]

@richieclean Oh hey, I didn't realize we were critiquing further. Not in the game for that, appreciate your responses and you can flavor it how you like, as a movie experience for the cast and audience alike, all in all no one saw or expected the scene playing out like it did. Plain and simple, regardless if they knew about anything ahead of shooting. Like Django or LOTR, or even Willy Wonka. Planned surprises, improv and unexpected outcomes happen.

Everyone gets mad at Ash for saying to not touch it when Parker goes at it with the knife, but they're all forgetting that the thing still has acid blood. If they killed it right there, the acid would bleed through the hull and possibly kill everyone there, or the acid would get on one of them and kill them that way. Either way, there's no safe way to handle it, and you can't just grab it because it's already capable of biting through flesh.
@Bluesit32
@Bluesit32 6 месяцев назад
It MIGHT have acid for blood. Prior to "Aliens" we didn't know if the adults had acid blood or if that was only the facehuggers. The facehuggers would be the ones who need it to make sure there was no way to remove it.

@herrzimm

Love the fact that a 1979 movie, using ONLY practical effects can scare people MORE than CGI effects can ever hope to achieve. I mean, we are talking about mostly a whole generation growing up with "CGI domination" of the effects industry, and yet a movie that came out BEFORE CGI was invented can freak them out? That says something about the JOY of "practical effects" having a true "realistic feeling" that is felt not just on screen by the actors and crew filming the movie, but the audience as well that can get a true "visceral" (physical) feeling to what they are seeing.

All I can say is, I was a teen just going on 13 when I went to see this in the theaters in 1979 with my dad. I was NOT ready for this scene, and it stuck with me for life! Hell, the whole movie stuck with me to this day and I can easily say it is THE SINGLE greatest Sci-Fi Horror film ever made! I remember three people upchucking into their popcorn bags when this scene played out, then running to the restroom! We ALL screamed, making it sound like the whole theater was being attacked all at once! It was a packed theater too! One helluva movie and one scary ass film! When my dad and I got home, mom just took one look at me and said "I KNEW it! I KNEW it!", but he fumbled trying to tell her there was no nudity, very few cuss words.....and she asked, "Then why does he look like that??"......he TRIED to explain this scene to her, and she simply rolled her eyes and walked off. Best Movie Experience of my life!

Not true. They knew the script and they knew that a lot of prosthetics people were working. They didn't know how much blood was going to be sprayed around, and maybe they hadn't seen the puppet. It must have taken several takes with extensive set up to go from John Hurt on the table with a little blood, to the prop of him with the baby coming out. It must have been a great amazing thing to have it all come together, but they were all professional performers, so don't dismiss their "acting".

There's a very famous artist who ceated the alien and many of the set designs. His name was H.R. Giger ... Ridley Scott noticed a piece of his art that had an alien in it. That alien would eventually become know as the Xenomorph. Scott knew instantly that that's what he wanted his alien to look like. That said... Giger's art is filled to the rafters with sexual innuendo. Hell, its usually not even innuendo, its as blatant as it gets. So, there's no coincidence that the baby alien looks like an angry penis and the adult Xenomorph's head looks like one as well. Just google his artwork and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. Xenomorph is by far and away the coolest and scariest alien in film history!! P.S. my favourite movie set of all time is in Alien when they see the Space Jockey. If you look at the machine it's sitting in, the telescope looking part makes the entire thing look just like a penis and scrotum lmaooo R.I.P. H.R. Giger!! 😂

- and this was before all the business with nanites and converting one life-form into the other. The 'Alien' was called 'biomechanical', a term for mixed biological and mechanical, akin to a cyborg. It was planted in Kane and left when it needed to, then connected itself to the electrics of the ship and grew to larger than man-sized in a couple of hours, no 'assimilation' needed.
