Just wonderful ! My husbands grandfather lived in Ivy Street and as it is no more it was great to see a picture of it. The Refreshments Rooms are still there at Rock Ferry pier. My family and I love going there. Thank you Jayne for all your hard work.
Wonderful to see the images. I lived in Ivy Street between 1953 and 1966/67 when the property was demolished. I attended Pilgrim Street Primary School and had a friend who lived in the prefabs in White Street. My grandparents lived in Chester Street in the building between Cross Street and Market Street.

I keep finding old photos and save them up. There are so many. I'm an admin assistant on the Facebook group, Birkenhead memories, so I tend to borrow images but I love them all
Thanks, my grandmother lived in Howard Street in 1912, which was just off St Mary's Gate and is shown on a map at 2:10 in your video. It took me ages to find a map showing it because it later got demolished (or was it bombed?) and a brewery sits on top of it now! She was a girl from county monaghan whose parents had died and unable to farm ran away first to Liverpool and then moved over to Birkenhead, presumably for husband's work around Lairds. From the map can you tell if Howard Street is tenements? It is also weird that she was supposed to have lived at number 4 but in the census there are street numbers from around 1-25 but no number 4.... I am thinking this was a really poor area then
I've just had a look at maps and Howard Street look a bit bigger than the tenements, I think they were terraced houses with yards. I will have a look on a few other maps and see what I can find
@@jaynephennah53 oh thanks very much I don't mean to bother you! I just double checked it is so strange in the census it says the Howard Street numbers were 1-20 but no listing for number 4 in the census. I also just left you a question about Flaybrick under that video..... thanks for all you are doing!
actually in your video at 3:20 there is a photo, the street running along the bottom is Abbey Streeet and you can see Howard Street from the air, fantastic!
On the maps, before the war there are houses there, yet on the 1954 map, they have built flats. I checked on some old photos of the area on Facebook and the houses look like they are three storeys high. Probably with one family living on each floor.
@@gmatthews7632 I love what we do at Flaybrick, the place is fascinating and is where our ancestors are buried, they lived hard lives without any money to ensure we had a better life than them!
