12/24/1948 16mm kinescope of a live TV commercial, from the very first televised episode of the popular radio show, The Chesterfield Supperclub, starring Perry Como.
Scientists who are "professional smokers" prefer Chesterfield cigarettes because they have no nasty aftertaste...classic propaganda from "big tobacco".

I don't think young people realize how BIG a part of life "smoking" was years ago. It was a very social habit. When I would visit my grand parents circa 1960....all the relitives would be over....the smoke in the house was so thick it was like walking through fog. If you didn't smoke people thought you were an "odd duck" people smoked EVERYWHERE...hospitals, DRs offices, at work, at home, in restaurants....some colleges allowed it in class.

I get no satisfaction from filter cigarettes. I smoke Pall Malls unfiltered now. To me, a filter just wastes space on a cigarette and they ruin the taste. I started smoking when I was 5 years old. @@spectrum10 yeah, I beat a lot of people at smoking. I started at 5. My family went to a Chinese restaurant in Philly. My uncle hated my father and used to love to get under his skin. My uncle smoked Chesterfield unfiltered. When we went to pay the bill at the counter, I asked my uncle if I could have a pack of Chesterfields. To irritate my father my uncle told the cashier “give the boy a pack of Chesterfields.” For reasons I cannot fathom, my father didn’t prevent me from having them! So I took the pack home and smoked them in the basement. After that, I just kept smoking and still do. I couldn’t make this story up! This was 1956!

Right after College and before I "got to" work at GE, I pumped gas. I think the owner sold as many cigarettes as gallons of gas. It was still a few years from being unpopular. One guy would always purchase "unfiltered Camels". Finally I told him; "I like you, all the other Smokers are pussies". He got lung cancer though, he was pretty young. I also took a pack of unfiltered Camels to the last Woodstock Festival in case there were lots of bugs *but I don't smoke.* It wasn't long before people were bumming cigarettes off one another and I kept quiet for a while in front of the group I was with until it was clear that Bugs weren't going to be a problem. It was an old Air Force Base - maybe chemicals were leftover for miles? Anyway, I finally offered my unfiltered Camels when people asked about a cigarette and all these smokers looked at me like I was trying to sell them sex with an underage prostitute. People in their 20's now don't smoke but Tobacco Corporations found a new way to kill them slowly. "Good thing", where would we all be if we didn't prioritize corporate profits over everything else.

Actually, as a person who has smoked since age 5 (I am now 70) I truly believe that there is such a thing as a “professional smoker.” A pro chooses only the best cigarettes primarily by the carton. He is loyal to his brand. The purchase of off-brand cigarettes such as “305” or whatever they are called is unacceptable to a professional smoker. To a professional smoker, a disposable lighter is unthinkable. Only a zippo lighter will do. A professional smokers knows how to open a pack of cigarettes and SHAKE one out and put it in his mouth. He knows how to light a cigarette under windy conditions. The pro knows how to take a long drag on the cigarette and resume talking with the smoke gradually escaping both his mouth and nose. Under the best circumstances the smoke never leaves his mouth or nose at all. These are the hallmarks of a professional smoker. I meet ALL of these criteria.

I'd love to know what happened to all the "expert smokers." There have to have been a lot of lost lungs, cancers of the lips, mouths and throats, tracheostomies and other kinds of suffering leading to slow deaths for many of them. On top of it they probably felt guilty for having smoked and brought it on themselves. Personal choice, apparently. Heartbreaking that we as a society swallowed the manipulation and made the biggest drug dealers of all rich while we paid with our lives and our health.

to mfnheff: as to your comment 5 months ago about finding fresh Chesterfields> You can re-hydrate tobacco real easy. Open the pack and see how dry they are. If real dry: place the pack opened in a small sealable jar or plastic bowl. Then take a small wad of paper towel...the size of a quarter and wet it. Place it in the container with the open pack, seal the container tight....by the next day you should have some nice fresh cigs. This is the same thing they do to fine cigars that have dried out

AT the time, NBC carried "CHESTERFIELD SUPPER CLUB" on radio five nights a week [7-7:15pm(et)], 'tee', and also on TV from this broadcast until 1950. This initial TV edition, seen at 11pm(et), was actually the "West Coast" version of the radio show, as a "repeat broadcast" was necessary for West Coast listeners to hear it at a more convenient time [8pm, Pacific Time]. After three weeks, however, the 7pm Friday edition was simulcast for the rest of the season.

Perry Como did a nightly quarter-hour music show on NBC Radio during the 1940's; I suspect this was a simulcast, considering that there were several shots of people speaking into microphones on floor stands instead of having boom mikes out of camera range. I think that the latter portion of this clip was from a later Como show on CBS-TV. Como came back to NBC in 1955 and hosted a full-hour, big-budget musical variety show through 1963 broadcast in color first on Saturdays, then on Wednesdays.

These "professional smokers" had to smoke 1000's of ciggies? What a shitty job.

Bill Armitage Prematurely from cancer caused by smoking. One must have to be a fool, or be bombarded with that kind of commercial from the time they are toddler to believe that commercial is truthful.

@CineGraphic You know the sad part, they could admit they were wrong back then and that cigs are harmful but it doesnt matter cause they already have ppl hooked to nicotine...just like now..no cig ads on tv, warning labels on cigs, states suing cig companies, and cigs are better than ever
