The deer are hammering the Chestnuts. Dunston Chestnut orchard update for late September. Burs are starting to drop and the Georgia deer love them. Our 85 Chestnut trees are approximately 7 years old and the chestnut crop is really turning out great this year. I’m harvesting 50 or 60 nuts to cold stratify with the hopes of growing our own trees. This is our test year. I’ll grab some more for eating next time I’m at the farm. The remaining thousands can go to the deer!
We are creating a habitat plan to improve the quality of food for our deer herd as well as Turkey and other critters. Habitat planning is critical early in the year to get the best results throughout the year, especially deer season. Our 180 acres in Central Georgia has much to offer, but we need more consistent and nutritious food options for our deer herd. Our full habitat plan includes prescribed burns and cutting of our timber forest, mulching of overgrowth areas, adding food plots and these fruit tree orchards. Our creek bottoms are loaded with oaks and the acorn crop is strong annually as well. With 30 foot rows between our Chestnut trees, we decided to plant rows of corn and sunflower in each row. This will provide food in August and September but also cover as for the deer.
Our plan for a winter plot around the edges of the Chestnut field are on hold until this drought is over. Very dry conditions. We placed our Redneck blind on one side of the field and are excited to see what we see from that blind!

My favorite hunting partner, my dad, enjoyed getting out to camp and enjoying some hard work, good laughs, family time, and occasionally getting a deer. When dad was no longer able to get in the woods with me, I started sharing brief videos with him. Now that dad has gone home to Heaven, I still enjoy taking the videos, but share them with RU-vid and each of you. A lot of the time when speaking into the camera, I'm thinking of talking to dad! I hope you enjoy them!

I wondered how Deers managed to crack open the pricky peel of the chestnuts

The US Forestry Service, in their infinite wisdom, thought they would end the blight by cutting down every American Chestnut tree. Instead, they could have gathered as many chestnuts they find in the southern range, not infected by the chestnut blight. Those nuts could have been planted out west during the blight. There should have been a national program to give those chestnuts to homeowners with acreage to help in the recovery. It's my understanding that many insect species went extinct because of the American Chestnut trees in the entire range being cut down. It's a tragic story to be sure. I'm glad there is a recovery plan in effect.

Just a thought... since chestnuts were a major food supply for wildlife, did their extinction due to the blight contribute to the passenger pigeon going extinct?

I can hardly wait to try cold stratifying nuts from our trees. We're still several years away from nut production, but it will get here in good time. Thanks for posting!

Found your channel a week or so ago, in search of chestnut info for a deer plot. Awesome stuff seeing your work pay off from earlier videos! Hoping in time I can do something similar on our family place in East Texas.

When do you think we should harvest the chestnut tree in south jersey?
@creekriseoutdoors
@creekriseoutdoors 9 месяцев назад
That’s a great question Marlene. It seems each zone going North is a little later than the one just South of it. I would imaging that you are only a few weeks away. Keep an eye on the trees and you’ll see some early burs opening up. My trees drop for about 3 weeks and then begin to go dormant. Good luck on your harvest!

You can often get some bur (nut) production after 4 years. My trees are 8-9 years old and are producing more each year.
