Female singers: *hit a5 and sound incredible* Me: Well I'm an alto, that's why I can't do it that well Brendon Urie: *pops up on the screen with his Bb*
Voice type only counts in low notes.... you can always go higher with the right technique.... look at Mariah Carey, she can hit F#2 and still belt a G#5 and even support it.
The chest mixed sounds a little bit more comfortable for me while the heady mix sounds like a little kit straining. And the balanced mix you can hear this clear sound under the note, almost like a silent vibrato. 😂 I don't know how to explain it. Masked voice does sound too fake for me, like a Rock and roll scream
More proof that SoHyang's technique is just better than almost everyone else - her mix on that G5 belt is so pure and resonant and balanced - it's unbelievable!
Amore Arusko You need to pick up a physics textbook ASAP. Resonance is not just sound. The sound is the source of vibration, the resonance is the amplification of it.
Amore Arusko i really dont think that anybody is arguing that resonance in physics = the 'resonance' term in vocals. The vocal term 'resonance' describes sound qualities which can be achieved through certain technical aspects in one's singing. Not the physical meaning of the word
Amore Arusko nope. There's actually resonance on closed vowels as well, so try again :p Ariana doesn't have resonance wtf😂😂 she can't even support past C5 consistently, much less create resonance😂😂 & yes being able to sing resonant G5 with BALANCED MIX does make you great. Esp when there's rarity over female singers supporting that high. Stop trying so hard omfg.
Amore Arusko You can achieve resonance on closed vowels as well... Technique isn't just to preserve your voice, it also helps you to avoid vocal fatigue, nodules, etc...
@@MS-kt8vl DIMASH HAS TERRIBLE TECHNIGUE IN HEAD VOICE BECAUSE HE MOVES HIS HEAD DURING VIBRATO, WHICH MEANS THAT THE NOTE IS NOT SUSTAINED. ALL NOTES BY SOHYANG, HOWEVER IS SUSTAINED CHEST, MIX, AND HV.
@@jrleblanc65 And... He only moves his head during vibrato sometimes. Not always. It's only for a dramatic affect. He's a classically trained opera singer, i'm sure his vibrato is just fine.
@@MS-kt8vl Head moving vibrato is not good for your voice. I used it in most of my operas, and my voice was destroyed after reenacting Funny Girl. Don't Rain of Parade's B4 at end destroyed my voice because it wasn't sustained.
It’s not your opinion. It’s fact. Balanced coordinated singing is technically right as long as there is no head and tongue shaking and no excessive veins. Balanced is correct if the tones are executed with the proper ratio of thickness and thinness and open throatedness. I’m sure people will tear me a new one but no technique is superior to true bel canto open throated, pharyngeal sound. Other techniques teach someone to sing to a microphone. The sound may be nice but the clarity and freedom and power will always be inferior in other singing styles. For example, A natural young Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin are prime examples of a properly coordinated and supported natural voice in popular music.
*Park Ki Young's* heady mix is so intriguing; quite powerful! *Whitney, Mariah, David Phelps, Sohyang and Beyonce's* balanced mix is absolutely mindblowing! So much RESONANCE!!! 🌌 Plus that outro 😍
@@maximus1295 whitney is trash ? are you curious ? but whitney had good technique . her chest voice is developed and she knew how to coordinate voice with TA muscles and chest voice. she lower her larynx and she had some projection ( not as good as opera legends but her projection still is good ) david Phelps also is a belter and her technique is very good .
@@hayedehstan 😂🤣 she is a micro "hero". A cheap fake. Callas, operatic voices before 60's are truly singers. Commercial stage for fancy, micros killed technique
@@mizzyeye0211 Unfair, Sohyang's voice is very light and bright, shining more on the higher parts of her register, while Charice's is more full and rich, it is obviously gonna overpower Sohyang's, that was not a good pairing from the start. It doesn't mean Charice is better than Sohyang or the other way around, they just have different types of voices that don't go well together. And besides, that duet is more than a decade old, her technique and musicality has improved tremendously since then. On more recent duets, you can tell she's much more mindful about harmonics and doesn't try to oversing them like she did with Charice.
Casy Strawberry exactly! Because it involves the diaphragm and all the other chest muscles. I think if it’s done correctly it sounds less “shouty” and more controlled and intended
@@toothless2323 I think you should know all of them. Different plays opt for different sounds. Like, people in Heathers and Le Mis sing in very different ways.
Amore Arusko the thing is, he always uploads when I'm sleeping and so I'm never one of the first to comment so the chances of him noticing my comments are small. Anyway, I'd rather enjoy music and vocal legends without having to deal with you too. But dont worry you'll see more of me too :)
Amore Arusko Yet you keep on discrediting Sohyang and even saying that the likes of Demi and Ariana are technically better than Sohyang in mixed voice. Smh..
Amore Arusko Discrediting the current best ? That would be Beyonce, Natalie and SoHyang, and if I remember correctly, it's you who discredits them. Believe it or not, the statements that fall under the category of 'pseudoscience' are the ones you say, not us.
Although balanced mix is probably the most desired vs Chesty & Heady, for some reason, Heady mix appeals me the most. It sounds heavenly, there's power but at the same time, there's that gentleness and lightness to it.
that's not true HOW DO YOU KNOW ? what makes you so sure ? I can sing and i've had many people tell me they can't sing and i've taught a few of them and they can sing better, i even have a guy at work who tries to sing with the radio during the day but he can't get to certain notes (at least that's what he says) then i explain something to him and ... he hits that note simple as that so.... why exactly do you think you're not good enough mate, in my opinion that's bullshit it's just what you believe, ok
A more "heady" production will last you the longest. Listen to people lika Patti Labelle, Audra McDonald or Kristin Chenoweth. That's rock solid technique.
Mixed voice happens naturally ic you are free of tension up to the point it starts ... however placing the voice in the forebead and nose does help, it makes you sound nasal and thin unless you have a lyric voice though (though tbh most people have lyric voices), Mariah used to do this during the daydream era.
Celine Dion I believe to be the longest running, most talented and most diverse vocalist out there. I'm not just brazenly saying she is the best, just that she has maintained a level of live vocal perfection for decades and it's VERY admirable.
I've been a singer, pianist and musician for most of my life.. I was trained in two school choirs growing up and was always taught to project and belt.. However this doesn't work too well when trying to sing higher notes so I'd always try to force myself to belt and project the higher notes but I'd struggle. Recently I've started singing into a studio mic at home, wearing headphones. By doing this I've been able to find my "mixed voice" where I can sing the higher notes but sort of mix head voice with chest voice. This means I'm able to sing about 7 notes higher than I usually can just in chest voice. It gives me this crisp and clear voice that has nice vibrato - a voice I can either sing in softy or with firmness.
Real Voice, it's not called distortion. This is called different resonance. Resonance frequencies make one note to sound different. Because of resonance frequencies we can distinguish one note from different music instruments and one note from different human voices. Distortion is something very different. These Chesty/Heady/Balanced mix have different resonance and sound different. All notes, all frequencies are produced while resonating at different places. Please read more about overtones. For one note - if bigger part from all resonance frequencies /overtones/ are in "head" then this note sounds "heady". If bigger part from all resonance frequencies /overtones/ in one note are generated by "chest" then this note sounds "chesty". We are using these words just to describe in one note which resonance frequencies are predominant. Distortion is entirely different thing.
Nikalsson What causes the overtones depends on a lot of factors, such as sound equalization, quality, the vocal mode of the singer, the vowels, how light or dark the sound is. Because all of the high notes here are belting made in M2(vocal chords separated), which means that the only possible thing that set them apart are the ones I mentioned.
Everyone can! You're biased! There's only 1 mix voice which is Balance mix the rest are mixing technique such as heady mix and falsetto mix,Mask placement is not a mix its a headvoice,Lastly,Chesty mix is not a thing and a mix,its chest dominant NOT MIX NOT EVEN FULL CHEST VOICE
This channel is helping me improve my singing so much, it really helps to know what style to use when trying to hit those notes because you end up unnecessarily frustrating yourself trying to hit your favorite singers notes with the wrong technique
Now the fact that I love singing Demi, Sia, and Adele songs makes so much more sense. I definitely think my voice is chesty mix. Do y’all think Haley Williams would also fall under this category? I feel like chesty mix voices are more capable of an edgy punk rock sound kinda like Paramore and Demi’s earlier music
Great video! As a clinical Voice Pathologist I agree with about 95% of your examples and I commend you for your auditory acuity eagerness to teach! Thank you for this fantastic compilation ⚡👨🏻🎤⚡
Thank you. This was nice to watch even if you already understood the different voices. I'm especially happy that Park Kiyoung was included so much, her voice is beautiful and does not garner enough attention. She is my favorite singer.
@@dededejereme2284 it doesn't mean nothing, you can hit a note, the same note in all the registers, then, it's not how they sound but how you produce them, heady mix isn't masked placed HV

Balanced Mix sounds beautifully, as it needs to be. Amazing, amazing years of worthwhile training given there. And Heady Mix is wonderful, to hit those High, high notes. Wow!
@@holpcs2 Not sure considering I have a favourite singer that I can listen to everyday for hours (Floor Jansen) . Her tone is warm, and when she sings in her higher range it's not piercing, it's inviting/warm and makes me want to melt. I feel sad that I can't listen to Sohyang much even though I love her. 😭
Very good job on this one! On point & accurate👌👌 Just some informations for people who just learned vocal pedagogy, there's also what we call as "chest-dominant mix" & "head-dominant mix". It's balanced mix but has slightly more proportion from either two ratios. Mariah & Whitney actually has chest-dominant mix & they become chestier as they ascend higher. Sohyang & Natalie are perfect examples of balanced mix. Nice one on that! They can keep a very balanced ratio in their entire supported range(with Sohyang & Natalie becomes a bit head-dominant in their top range, which is very understandable). & there's also what we call "heady vocal placement". In which mixed voice is placed in both mask & mostly head area to lighten the voice. Mariah did this quite often in the past to ease the tension of her chesty mix. One of the example is in this video actually, on her part. The opposite of it, "chesty vocal placement" also exist. Sohyang do this sometimes along with adding a bit more chest ratio to her mix to give it a darker, thicker effect to her voice. Usually in power western ballad & songs that require powerful impressions.
Andreanata Noivan Great points apart from "it becomes chestier and chestier" as they ascend. Mariah and Whitney actually became headier as they ascend and they have both displayed balanced mixes especially Mariah.
Andreanata Noivan there’s no such thing such as balanced mix but has more proportion of chest/head voice. A balanced mix means that it has the same proportion of chest and head voice. If either is more than the other, it would mean that its a chest/head dominant mix. Belting can be viewed as a spectrum. Full chest voice> chesty mix> balanced mix> heady mix> full head voice. The higher you belt,, the more heady you become. Some singers naturally have heavier voice (chest dominant modal register) some naturally have lighter voice (head dominant modal register). For example, whitney/adele has naturally chesty voice, and sohyang/ariana has naturally heady voice. The technique would be to learn to add more chest/head voice when belting. To be honest, whitney dont mix that well. Her voice goes from full chest>pulled chest voice>chest dominant mix. She was never really consistently able to balance her mix or become heady. While Celine, full chest>chest dominant>heady mix. She also cant get the mix balanced out consistently. while mariah is the technically excellent mix voice user. She can go from full chest>chesty>balanced>heady mix and change the proportion depending the song and her voice condition. While sohyang, she naturally has lighter voice. Her full chest voice lays very low in her vocal range and start mixing early as well. So her belting range always have only little chest voice. But she has learned to bring more chest into her voice, resulting in fuller mid belts. So her belts become in this manner, slightly chesty mix>balanced>heady mix.
Songsource 1. At times Whitney’s mix sounded more balanced especially in her prime and in this clip. And rarely she sang with a heady mix 2. Celine doesn’t even mix apparently. As this video showed she uses a masked placed head voice
One Dollar Bleach 1. Whitney was still using chesty mix here, although its close to balanced. 2. Celine dion uses heady mix belt especially within F5-G5/G#5, she shift her technique to masked head voice around Bb5-C#6/D6.
Thank you for putting Hyewon, Ailee and others from different genre and countries. They are sorely underrated for their vocal talent as some people don't know to look past their commercial music, I think? Plus, they don't get many opportunities to show off like that. It's really quite amazing when you hear them shred it like that for the first time.
