Chetvorno Horo, a tambura duet composed by Alexander Eppler, performed by Ginger Russell and Tedy Dimitrova on Eppler tamburas.
Ginger dedicates her performance to Vassil Bebelekov, who taught her the joy of playing Bulgarian music at the balkanalia! dance camp in 2000. Vassil left us much too early on July 31, 2016.
Recorded at Jack Straw Productions
Engineer: Doug Haire

I still want to learn how to play this song in my bouzouki. It is not a Tambura but I believe it is close! Congratulations on the performance of this song! Greetings from Brazil

So beautiful all around - best 5:34 I've spent in a while. Lovely tribute to Vassil, who indeed did leave much too soon and has left a gaping hole in the fabric of live Bulgarian music. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thank you for your kind comments, Alex. Mr. Eppler composed this for me as a student practice piece. As he added more sections for me to learn it became the wonderful piece that we now enjoy. Unfortunately, only about a dozen of these tamburas were made by Mr. Eppler and he died June 6, 2019. I will post the score for this piece on www.ratchenitza.com so that everyone can play it where ever they are on what ever instrument they love.

@@DancerSeattle Thank you for the link to your website, which I will go through with interest. I've always had a special love for traditional folk music from the Balkans from my teenage years onwards. I accidentally came across your video when typing in some titles of music by the Dunav Balkan Group, London, England www.dunav.org.uk some of whose music I have personally restored and digitized from analogue studio tape recordings made in 1981. Example track: Kjustendilsko Horo soundcloud.com/dunav-balkan-group/track17

I don't recall seeing a tambura being played left handed before, but John certainly mastered it. You did a nice job of cleaning up the tape recording. It sounds rich and full.

@@DancerSeattle well, I only knew the last leader of the group. They are now older and some pased away or are retired, so the group is no longer that active. They called themselves enthusiastic amateur musicians, but I also agree with you. I think they sounded professional for part time hobbyists.. not that I can claim to be an expert to judge them myself really :-) I'm only really involved in tape restoration, recovery and servicing obsolete old studio reel to reel tape machines. Audio and video tapes will eventually degrade, become unplayable or fall apart depending on age, storage and chemical processes, although some can last a long time.

Why do you play this so slowly? It says 55bpm per time. It sound a lot more impressive at full speed

Beautiful playing. Do you tune your tambura D-G-B-E, like the first 4 strings of a guitar? Can you tell me the scale length of your instrument (from the nut to the bridge)?
@TemkaUwU
@TemkaUwU Год назад
I am a guitar player but I came to own a tambura not too long ago. It's tuned like you would a mandolin just one octave lower. Scale length is about the same as a Gibson scale guitar
@The1superrussell
@The1superrussell Год назад
You are correct, it is tuned like a guitar's first 4 strings. I don't have it here with me, but I believe it has 3 octaves on it.

@@TemkaUwU perhaps you have a Macedonian tambura? Mine is a Bulgarian tambura, which is tuned like the first 4 strings of a guitar.
