The Chevy 283 is an iconic engine, almost bulletproof. It was the gateway to a line of larger displacement small block engines that are a very beloved and popular part of automotive history in North America. My first car in the last year of high school circa 1972, was a 1957 Bell Air with a 283, 4-bbl, 3 speed stick on the floor and an NHRA decal in the rear window.
I just put a 283 in my 34 chevy. 305 HO heads, RV cam, Offenhauser daul 2 barrel rodchestors, nice block hugger header will full length exaust, turbo 350 followd by 373 posi. Snappy little ride that gets about 18 mpg and stays cool enough to do the cruise loops.
It's a work of art man, so beautiful it tear a to my eye. What's the rod length to crank stroke ratio of a 283? I think pretty good if I remember. Big bore short stroke long rod, they just seem to run really good that way.
3.905 (030) bore, 3.0" stroke, 5.7" rod, the compression height on the factory piston was stupid, looks like a diesel slug. These engines with 1.062 pin height can run 6.450" rod
Big bore short stroke long rod is the combo for high rpm without expensive exotic parts. Less side load on the pistons for longer bore life, less stress on the crank, slower piston and bearing speed, get one breathing good and you’ve got something
Correct..did you know that chevs smallest is a 262? Built 75 and 76 for monzas. Have one that was wrecked at 500 miles and pickled. Put it in a 75 cj5 with a turb350 auto and 456 gears with arb diff. locks Little kitten but cool thing is max torque at 1800 and max hp at 3750. Great little jeep motor for crawling around..on the other hand I have a 283 Gipson motor in the 82 cj7 with auto and 410s..now that's a great motor for a jeep, very balanced on power. I'm at 305 to 315 depending on the day hp.... and that's plenty for a rig that weighs 3700.
@@theophilhist6455, I got a 66 Chevelle for that 283 but the engine doesn't belong to me , It belongs to him , I could care less if he reads it or not , I got a 327 And he probably has a car to put it in anyway so my comment was more of a Joke than a request . So bid away theo .
