bought a 2011 and it had this problem two short days later its fixed thanks to this video. knew what to take apart in which order. great job on the video!
Great video! The other videos show how to change timing chain with engine out of the vehicle. Nice to see how it’s done with the engine in place much better info
So glad you made this video. Dealer wants $1800 just to change Head Gasket in 2012 2.4 Equinox, not to mention water pump and timing set! Video couldn't be any better!
Doing the same job on my daughters car. She tapped 12 of the 16 valves so I have to get a valve job done too. The forward timing guide seems to be a problem with this engine. Great video really helped seeing someone else doing it!
Mike Nowotny thanks and wow... 12 valves ? That’s crazy but hope to hear you get the valves fixed and put back together. 👍🏼 so she can have her car back. I know my daughter loves her Malibu lol
I'm taking my son's apart now. Definitely some bent valves. This is the second timing chain to go out in 200K miles. The first one made a helluva rattle and I caught it. Not so lucky this time.
Thank you so much for this video. You saved me tons of money and time. I got 2 exhaust manifold broken studs and gotta take the heads out to get them removed. Thank you!!!!
I want to congratulate you... your explanations are very detailed, precise and clear... your professionalism is excellent. Thank you for taking the time to do this kind of Video-Guides.
Thanks for taking us along for the "ride". The steps you laid out and the torque specs are greatly appreciated. I'm not sure why. if you went so deep into repairing that engine, why you didn't do the water pump while you had everything apart. Also why you didn't use new Cam Solenoids? At least clean them using a 9 volt battery and a glass of gas or B12 cleaner. The top was full of Sludge. Also the intake has an internal "PCV" section that clogs up. That must of needed to be cleaned out as well. Maybe the Seafoam Treatment your going to use will address that issue?
Great Video SCR, sad part is I have to take the head off to remove 2 broken exhaust bolts on #1 cylinder, just to tight to get any sort of straight drilling. Guess ill do the timing chain as well, car only has 122k on it.
Mine had 2 broken exhaust bolts to after the exhaust manifold cracked..Common problem. I used a new gasket and some copper exhaust sealant and bolted it back together..No leaks and it's been 10 k..Someday it will need tapped though
I'm getting ready to replace timing chain and water pump on my 2011 as they are both original with nearly 210k miles. It has been well taken care of, I just want to do it as kind of a preventative maintenance. Just curious if the head gasket is something else I should consider? Since it will be halfway torn down. Great video with helpful tips, thanks.
mcompton2010 it’s a option you can choose to do but I wouldn’t replace the head gasket. I did however only because the timing chain jumped and I checked to make sure the valves and pistons didn’t kiss. But yes, the timing chain is suppose to be replaced as a preventive maintenance and good to hear your on top of that 👍🏼
210k and it's preventative maintenance? Lol I am surprised the guides made it that long.Goes to show that oil changes and good oil help..Mine has 72k and I'm about to change timing and balance chain gears and even the cam phasers/ gears just to be sure it last till 200k..I sure hope it does we can't afford another car payment.
Did you replace the camshaft sprocket bolts? Is loctite required on any of these bolts: camshaft bearing caps, timing guide bolts, and timing cover bolts? Thanks for the great video. I'm helping a friend with a G6, 8 bent intake valves...
These exhaust manifolds should have been recalled..Everyone cracks and most break off a bolt or 2..Ours was leaking exhaust fumes in the cabin while the defrost was one..Super dangerous someone could die.
I’m gonna try this method of getting the new chain on this new chain is unforgiving it has no play no slack I can’t get it over the bottom sprocket but tomorrow morning I’m gonna try this thank you !
I need to replace the Head Gasket on our 2009 Pontiac G6 2.4l., Are there any major differences between the engines? This is the only video how-to I have found that seems to show what I need. I'll be watching through the video again to make a list of all the tools I will need.
@@ls1camaro92 thank you for your quick reply to a video that is over 6 months old. After re-watching I saw the list of related vehicles that briefly showed at the start of part 1. Your video makes me feel confident in my ability to do this repair myself. I only worry about if something is stuck or breaks during the dismantling part and getting all the torque specs correct during the rebuild.
@@ls1camaro92 I followed your guide and skipped the step of finding TDC on cylinder 1 prior to removing the head. In your case the timing belt was off anyway so it wouldn't mater, however in my case the gasket was leaking. I have reinstalled the head and timing belt following both your instructions and the Chilton book, but the instructions say to "carefully rotate the crankshaft by hand through at least two full revolutions. If you feel any resistance, STOP! There is something wrong - most likely the valves are contacting the pistons." there is some resistance but not much considering I'm rotating everything. I do hear the valves clicking as it rotates. I suspect this clicking is from the springs closing them. Is this normal?
I only have tomorrow to have this timing job finished! 07 G5 2.2 vin-F. After I was done, I noticed the exhaust cam was turned clockwise a bit to much & is sitting at about 11 to 1130 rather then the 10 & 2 position where the cam sprockets on the 2.2 is supposed to be & that is when I realized that, I forgot to straighten the crank because it was moved earlier! However, If all the other marks are on point, I don't see how it can rotate it from 11ish to the correct 10 O-clock position? I was pressed for time & had to be at work & it is below freezing! Now, I only have tomorrow to be done with a high of 21° & NO GARAGE! I AM HOPING THAT, IF I REMOVE THE CHAIN & START OVER? HOPEFULLY THAT WILL FIX IT? Also, do I need to use permatex on both sides of the front engine cover gasket or 1 side????
@@daveyboy8907 I want to apologize, Idk when you asked your question about, How did it go on the timing job on my 07 Pontiac G5 2.2ltr.. I replaced both chains, both tentioners, oiler, I also added/replaced the front engine cover because the oil pump is built into the front engine cover.I SHOULD OF PRE-LUBED THE NEW OIL PUMP But, it was 15-20 degrees outside & I was in a massive hurry because I had to work that night!!! I then replaced the serpentine belt & the belt tensioner, & spark plugs I got a new water pump with the timing kit but, did not use it. It rums fine! Much better then many 4 cylinders! Currently getting 27mpg & I am not easy on it!!! Plus I live in a hilly area. The transmission failed 3 months later, I installed a 38k mile trans & its ran fine for the past 14-15 months since I did the timing job.the one thing that almost got me was the one timing guide bolt that is resessed in the head! It almost fell into the oil pan! I recommend using a magnetic tool for that bolt!!!
Beam torque wrench is the worst tool that I've ever owned. One day while using my beam torque.. I threw it at the wall so hard that it broke through to the outside. I've been using click since then, my favorite budget torque click is Husky brand. No issues with both Husky sizes.
I have a 2011 Chevy malibu 4 cylinder my problem is the car won't go fast than 5 mph the screen on the dash board say engine reduce power. I was told a knock sensor circuit 1 was the problem I changed the sensor underneath the magnafo but I still have the problem.. is there another sensor I have to change? Or is it something else?
Omar Cuevas jumped time. Had same issue on 2010 equinox with same engine. Your timing is retarded causing it to have the reduce engine power. Don’t start till timing gets redone to prevent valve damage. Started mine one too many and had to redo all the valves as it had jumped once more and that was it.
great video and commentary. but please dont ever use pry bars on harmonic balancers. sand paper on square block for cleaning. wrench in cam is to prevent damage to timing chain. should have replaced injectors they are cheap.
Michael Guillen you don’t have too, just remove the valve cover and timing cover and stick a cloth on the bottom so you don’t contaminate the oil and get the job done. 👍🏼
@@ls1camaro92 hey thank you for your help with this ,not so bad after digging into it ,our guides were broken and chain had slack ,im sure there are some plastic pieces in the oil pan, cloyes chain kit came with 3 guied and oil jet and tensioner not sure if tensioner enguaged but i did give it a few hard smacks when i replaced the parts it fired right up and smooth as new no chain chatter,i was kind of worried after lining up the links and tightened all the guides i did turn the crank just to ensure piston didnt contact a valves but i didnt see the links line up with timing marks again knowing no pistion contact with valves i was golden to start her up mannn i feel accomplished for sure thanks again !!!!
DTerry I actually made them. Going to the parts store and getting the same threaded bolts but slightly longer and cut down a small pipe/cylinder that mirrors the width of the old bolt. So it was like a 2 piece bolt. Or just take your vin number to the dealership and they can order the correct bolts for you.
Exhaust camshaft is on the back, exhaust manifold side of motor. Intake camshaft is on the front, throttle body, air intake manifold side of motor. Black VVT phaser is usually for Exhaust side, and White is for intake side but not always dependable to observe these 2 colors because they can be the same. The best way to determine what a part spec and location is to lookup the part number that is stamped on the part somewhere.
My only gripe with your video: I can't believe you didn't put the cams in the correct position prior to installing the head. Someone with less experience than yourself could bend the valves while trying to turn the cams/crank into position...and get a Snap-On head bolt degree wheel for goodness sake LOL
I hate these chevy malibu cars, they are a real pain in the a$$!! I have a 2013 2.5 and I cant find any videos how to fix anything on them. The first problem is the electrical problems, everything dims, flickers, power steering goes with it and shuts off while I'm driving. second, I know the timing is about to go, it sputters when I'm at a red light so I have to put it in neutral so it doesn't shut off, Third the fob key was giving me problems and the dealer wanted $200 to replace it but I found a way to do it cheaper. fourth you can't find out how the transmission fluid is looking and if its low, 5th I have replace the battery every 3 to 4 months because it dies out for some reason due to the electrical issues. Worse car I ever had, I never had these problems when I had a Honda, Toyota even an American ford.
