In this video I have a look at a 2013 Chevy 3500 Duramax. The customer complaint is that it keeps blowing the cooling fan fuse. Pretty easy right!? Well in this case it was. -Enjoy!

TEAC Fan here’s a bunch of fuses. Just change them out twice a day and when your out I’ll sell you some more. If it gets worse we will have to up the fuse rating. Take it easy though I don’t want your wiring to burn up by pushing it too hard, we might have to install a resistor to lower your alternator output. It will lower the efficiency of your other circuits but it will keep your risk of electrical shock down.

I was a Commercial Pilot, Director of Maintenance, and Chief Engineer in our charter company for over 35 Years. 1 lear 24, 1 Metro SA226, 1 Aero Commander 500A, 5 MU2-B35/36, 13 Piper PA31, and others through the years. I also did all the Piston Engines, and Turbine Engines including the TPE331-6 & -10 engines for both repair and overhaul. Being a TPE331 "Engine Guy" and pilot, I always wanted to get my hands on an OV-10 Bronco to "play with." We did have a DHC-1 Chipmunk and an Aero Votechody L-29 Jet Trainer for that..... but a Branco would have been.....very special. I still have a 250 Watt 28 Volt Landing Light with alligator clips on it to bridge a pulled Circuit Breaker for testing for shorts. It will draw a maximum of about 10 amps if the circuit is shorted, (and a smaller light for 2 Amp Circuits) but will normally allow the equipment to function when not shorted. Watch the light and manipulate the wiring bundles. When the light bulb lights brightly, you are getting close. Practicing an emergency descent in the Lear from 41,000 feet 10,000 feet one day, Flight Idle, Gear down, Roll to 60 degrees angle of bank, let the nose fall to -30 Degrees, wings level, and decend at 240 Knots indicated. Go to pull the gear up and the Gear Breaker blows. Returned to the field and installed the bulb across the pulled breaker and gear up and down as normal. Gear down and manipulate the wiring on the R/H Gear leg....and....winking light with an arcing sound, and we found the problem. At 240 Knots, the wiring to the squat switch, ....well.....did not fair well where it normally bent during gear retraction. Easy find and easy fix. I love Eric's Videos. They are great educational entertainment. Being on the West Coast of Canada and working on Airplanes as well as vehicles..... I am SURE GLAD we never had to deal with the Rust and Corrosion that he sees....WOW! He is an Auto Hero!

Any other Dr. would have prescribed 2 fuses a day for 30 days. Then schedule a follow-up visit to assess the symptoms and determine if further testing and diagnostics are needed. Meanwhile, writing another prescription for a refill of 60 more fuses, taking 2 a day for the next 30 days again. Not our Dr. O, he is a family physician who cares about his patients like family. He knows he would have to fix his mistakes, if he makes a wrong diagnosis. While other doctors end up burying their mistakes. Good job Dr. O. Have a blessed and safe week to you and your family.

While you say that if "I can do it, you can do it", it takes an extreme level of common sense and a fair amount of automotive experience/training to find these types of shorts. It's easy once you experience it, but not so much if you don't know components, how they work and are not familiar with wiring diagrams. Great job and remember, you get paid for what you know, not how fast you fix something.

Great job on finding/resolving the issue. Reminds me (many moons ago) when I was doing car electronics, an old lady with a van came into the shop - she asked if I could find out why her husbands wheelchair lift was blowing fuses....Many shops would NOT touch it and if they did, charged a huge amount for the fix of just changing the fuse which would blow randomly. It only took me an hour to open up the inside (wherever the wires would be running) and find that the people who installed the wiring, ran the wires over a bolt and taped it with "tar" tape against the body of the car AND where someone would step on frequently.....morons.....I actually fixed it by making a simple wire channel for the area and did NOT charge her since no one could fix it.....we received so much business from that ONE act of being "nice" that we went from doing car electronics to becoming the "car electrical troubleshooters" of the area. Kudos to you!!!

I’m here cause of the knife in the tire video . I showed the wife and said when I worked for a big tire company here in Massachusetts my boy did all the road hazards and would catch people trying to scam a lot . I think she ran the knife over I doubt someone could imbed it that deep with there own strength idk . I just delivered the tires haha

Top class vid Eric as someone who knows nothing about wiring diagrams you make it easy to understand and as usual you don’t exaggerate the way you diagnose the problem, love the way you work Eric and you are a very humble person

Time is money and most dealerships strive for the least amount of time and collect the most amount of money. I'm retired skilled trades, machine repair at a tier one auto supplier. I like to compare skill levels like this. A good rabbit dog will make a few back and forth attempts then he's on it and gone, some dogs never sort out the track getting nowhere. I'd put you in the, this dog can hunt class. Through and meticulous. When working on very large machine tools my theory was to start at the motor and follow the horsepower and you'll find the problem. Very well done.

well done SMA !! This happened to me on my grand caravan. Took it to the oldest electric shop in the city . I asked them to check for broken wires first! the tech read list of probable "causes" in the service sheet, replaced the whole under hood fuse box with a gunk yard one. still had the problem . they went underneath, found the rubbed , exposed wire. I had to pay for the whole bad experience $$$ :( I never sent them anymore business. Sad when folks are not trained to think like SMA crew. another great video Eric. thank you .

I'm retired now,but spent 37 years at a GM dealer locating and fixing problems such as this. One thing I often would do to be sure I had the correct circuit is to purposely short the wire to see if the fuse would blow. Especially if it was in a harness with multiple wires the same color.

Awesome your way of doing things is why someone will drive or tow to get you to repair stuff. Yes there was not a issue at the time but one good bump to ground and there you go, it's about using your head and think things through.

I love it when Eric says "I'm going to show you my diagnostic process". I had a similar problem recently where the motor would cut out for a second or 2 when she hit a big bump in my wife's ZJ. Could never pinpoint it until I was messing around under the hood and just happened to brush up against some wires when I heard noise from the throttle body area. Ended up being a map sensor wire rubbed through on the intake manifold

We have REALLY crappy mechanics here in CT! I too live in CT and have been trying to get my vehicle to SMA. I've had my work van in the same shop for a mis-fire 8 weekends in row! Every Sunday I get it back, then Monday I head to work and the same P0300 misfire code comes back every single time I drive it! (before anyone asks, the reason I keep going back to the same shop is because they charged me $1036 to fix this, so when it comes back its under warranty... but its time to give up on them, wish I could get my $1036 back)

@@rodiona8781 2014 Chevrolet Express 1500 Cargo Van 4.3L V6 RWD. It is the single most UNDER-POWERED vehicle I've ever driven. It is too much van for that size motor imo. They shouldn't even make them. They should come standard with the V8. I do alot of highway miles, and not alot of weight so I figured it would get the best gas mileage. WRONG! Over the last 87,000 miles it averages exactly 13.425 MPG. I have friends with the big Express 2500 and 3500, they crush me in MPG. Nothing good about this setup at all! Sorry I'm rambling, can you tell I hate this van?

Seriously, Eric, you are an inspiration. A logical approach will lead you to a diagnosis and the diagnosis will lead you to a solution. But a question - would a dealer have fixed the two wires or would a dealer have replaced the harness. I really don’t know.

I had an intermittent short in my 66 gmc taillight circuit. All at once, it started randomly blowing the fuse. Only when you were driving it, of course. Finally found factory harness wire getting pinched by the bed (factory routing). You had to be driving over bumps and applying the brakes at the same time to blow the fuse. Must have taken decades to eventually wear through the sheath and then through the insulation of that wire. Taped it up good, put in a zip tie to secure the harness away from the pinch point. Problem solved, mostly by luck since I started at the bulb and worked my way towards the cab.
