Equinox comes in for engine rattle, engine light on and loss of power. Right way I knew the problem. Stretched timing chain. Many Chevy 2.4L motors have the same problem. This is the fix!
@@ridgid859 the job has already been completed but not anymore because I have to replace the crankshaft itself. The damn key spot where you have to align the harmonic balancer on has broken off. Without that I can’t get the correct torque and risk completely damaging the engine. At first I didn’t notice but when I completed the job it started up perfectly then 20 seconds it stopped, the belt was not aligned properly more like wedged on to the engine keeping the balancer from spinning. Thank goodness it didn’t destroy the inside. But I believe if I can just replace the key everything should work out fine without me having to completely disassemble the engine. So I have a project to do. But has far as the timing chain I believe I’ve mastered it for only 2.4 engines.
@@Juggernaut9352 I haven't done any of the above mentioned repairs yet. I might tackle this later in the summer, or just keep adding oil and see how long it goes before it goes boom.
@@ridgid859 haha literally it can go boom at any moment to the point where all you did was starting it up but in that case hopefully you’re already home. Definitely don’t want that to happen if you’re on the freeways or road period. But whenever you start to change your timing chain just get the whole set, make sure you get the sprockets too one for exhaust and intake. They play a major part for throwing your timing off due to wear and tear.
Not saying it will or not. But if you take good care of your engine. Keep up on maintenance etc. will that prevent timing chain issues. Especially on these engines??
Caused by GDI abrasive soot, fuel dilution of the oil, cheap oil, cheap gas, and long drain intervals. Use premium oil, premium gas, change every 3-4k miles. Ignore the Oil Life Monitor. Winter time 2-3k mile changes.
the root cause is terrible engine by Chevy, everything you listed is just solutions to extend/prevent the timing chain from getting loose. The engine eats oil like crazy, probably have to keep topping it off every 1k miles before, as for fuel, this has nothing to do with fuel
@tomatoisnotafruit5670 it's the tree huggers and politicians forcing insane CAFE and Emissions leafing to GDI technology, and ever increasing complexity. You obviously have never designed anything or deal with regulations. Thier ultimate goal is to force us into mass transit and electric vehicles.
Hey guys. As a Chevy Equinox owner with currently 359km, original engine, you have to always stay on top of checking the oil level and always change it every 5000 km. It burns oil so always check once a week and top up when necessary. The chain will always stay lubricated
At 140,000 the chain did`t rattle it just jump time bent 9 valves ,going to check pistons . maybe a head replacement. the valve cover comes off easy smart thing would be to check the chain . Has a bad oiling system for chain has a update style more oil.
If you take the camshaft sprockets out from the camsgaft and first line up the chain on all 3 sprockets then install the cam sprocket on the camshaft. That works best.
@@Toki.Mechanic thank you I just finished the job but now when I turn the key on the on position I hear a click. Do you know what that can be? Oil might have leaked on the starter
@@Toki.Mechanic it's the throttle. I don't know what happened but when I turn the key to on the butterfly flap on the throttle opens and thats what makes the click noise...and when I turn the key off the butterfly flap opens a little more and makes a "pfft" noise like it sucks in extra air. I don't know why that is happening.
Wife had to buy this pos vehicle. If you own one get rid of it as fast as possible. Never ever again will she be allowed to buy another American vehicle. I told her if she ever does I will light it on fire and just leave her. That's how much American cars have angered me. I am in a fury of anger over it. Had to work on it in the snow. Just to find out engine is trash. Go put the battery in a real vehicle that I will never get rid of. Why cause it always works. The immortal Honda Element. Most of you have never worked on one cause it doesn't understand death. Fired right up like a champ. That a do girl I can always depend on her. In fact now I am going to start collecting Elements. Greatest vehicle on the planet. This coming from a tech who works on high end luxury vehicles. Over 400K miles on her. I have not even changed the engine oil for over 8 years I just add when low as it just a back up vehicle. It doesn't care. Plus you can carry anything in it. It even embarrasses most trucks. Snow it don't care either AWD with pinned and welded gears. I did years ago.
