This video will show you how to replace the external inline fuel filter on a 2004 Chevy Tahoe. This process will be the same for 2002-2006 5.3L Silverado/Sierra 1500, Tahoe, Yukon, and Suburban. This process and filter will also work on 1997-2005 4.3L Blazer, 1997-2004 4.3L S10, and the 1997-2000 2.2L S10. The fuel filter and special low-profile fuel disconnect tool were purchased from Amazon below are links to those products.

Good video. I own a 2002 Suburban we bought brand new with the same fuel filter (NAPA Gold 3623). It's in a horrible location to get to, especially when you're 73 y.o. My car has 159,000+ miles on it (don't know exact mileage because the odometer dash circuitry has failed, so I judge mileage by the oil change interval service light). I am changing this filter for the 4th time today. I can't imagine your car going 170,000 miles on one fuel filter. Although the brand filter you replaced is OEM, the previous owner probably had it changed at the Chevy dealership. The most I have ever gone with this car is 45k on a fuel filter. My wife nearly didn't make it up Snoqualmie Pass five years ago when the car started acting up on her, nearly scared her half to death! I had changed that filter 35k miles prior to her experience. After she got home, we continued to drive it for another thousand miles with no issues (I chalked her experience up to water in the fuel she purchased). Then one day I decided to take it up a highway on a steep incline at full throttle. It started hesitating badly and I knew immediately it was time to change the fuel filter again. That was five years ago, so today is the day because I hate surprises on a road trip!

Thanks for pointing out removing the metal retaining clip on the flex line connector and replacing it with the plastic one that is on the new filter!
@billwacker1251

I have never replaced that metal retaining clip in the line past the fuel filter. It's the o-ring that seals the deal and that's brand new on the new filter. Have never had any problem continuing to use the old metal retaining clip.

Just tried this tonight with the “special tool” 2 hours of frustration and I gave up lmao. I changed mine last about 50k miles ago. Used a metal set of the fuel line disconnect pliers on the other end of the short line. It was still a pain but it worked. Should have just stuck with that method again lol

I have an 03 Suburban with a 5.3L Flex Fuel engine. I only use regular gas for better mileage. The parts are different regardless of which gas you use. (Flex fuel when 8th character in VIN is a "Z") I mention this because the fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator are different. The fuel pressure is different as well. I don’t believe the non-flex fuel 5.3L engines have a serviceable fuel filter but I am not positive. It's good you mention the "low profile" fuel line tool as the standard size fuel line tool is too long to fit in that tight space. Good video!

Thanks Man…today…I did everything…exactly as you in this instruction….and I got it to move a bit with the silver set and the Tool….but could not get the fitting to move back like you did,..I pried and pried and took off the other end….broke the bracket…got soaked in fuel….bloody and dirty for two hours…and for the life of me 🙏🏻.I could not get that damn fitting loose….I have seen people Cut the end off the Filter…in frustration….and I saw one guy remove the short fuel line with the Filter on…but I am wondering….why did my Mechanic a few years ago…leave the metal retainer in the fitting…if…if…he actually changed the Filter…maybe Not….I assume….I guess I will order a fuel line…remove the skid plate and fuel block….I will use the plastic retainer on the new Filter.

Sorry to hear that this didn't work for you. Did you try sticking the silver inserts in at different angles? I wondering if one of those tabs is bent just enough and not releasing. It's kinda of a poor design by GM and on top of that they give you no room to work. Hopefully it works out for you. Thanks for the positive comments 👍

@@BLUECOLLARGARAGE ha ha….ya I hear ya…I tried all angles in two hours….but a video for the metal X Tool….mentioned to grab the fitting and push toward the tool….or you lock those tabs with the disconnect Tool….and I was trying to do that but could not get a good grip….it is crazy tight in there….I will order a short fuel line…rest up…and give it a shot when spring comes….it could be damaged from the Shop I had used….found out they charged me for 4 O2 sensors…and I realized later…they only changed one…I had marked them prior….that’s..also..why I am doing my own Work now….you make a great Video….should have gone smooth….Thanks…blame GM.

Ford went to these inline filters on my 2000 F150. I HATE them!!! '84/302 had a throttle body mounted filter. 2 wrenches and presto. Done. Those little locking tabs are a major PITA to get off. I'm not a fan of cheap plastic replacing the metal retainer on a fuel line though. Thanks for including that! I like Wix and Mahle filters. K+N as well..Napa Auto sells Wix as "Napa Gold". I want one without the plastic. One commenter was right. Pop the retaining strap and give yourself more space to work with. '00 F 150 that retaining band is welded on and rots in 🇨🇦 salt. Your stuck with removing the clips as is. Gotta say I was NEVER a fan of the General. Ford guy all my life. Won't even look at Fords now. That said. This '04 Sierra is actually easier to work on then my '00 F150. Good trucks! Why GM messed that up with AFM and TVs and ball warmers and spotty trannies for $80K+ instead of a stick and roll down windows and the current BS with Barra limiting production to keep the prices skyhigh is a shame. That 5.3L is otherwise a good motor. Easier to work on. Vulva oops Volvo ever goes back to making Brick cars they'll clean up. Me included. I want a Milkot. Can't buy em here. Someone stop this insanity. They only have to be pickup trucks. Not Cadillacs with a bed. Great vid Brother!!! Straight to the point. No BS. No background music. Got yourself a subb. 👍👍

@BLUECOLLARGARAGE

Sounds like you have a clogged or kinked fuel tank breather hose. If the tank builds up to much pressure when pumping gas it shuts off. Have you tried pumping gas on the lowest setting of the nozzle or tried tipping the nozzle upside down while pumping?

I've had problems with mine, when sitting an an idel, the rpms will start bouncing from like 450 to 750, and when it's not doing it, it will sit at a constant 750 healthy idel, no check engine lights or reduced engine power modes, and I've replaced the cam sensors, throttle body position sensor, throttle body, air intake, air intake, all 8 spark plugs and all I spark wires and the ignition, I ran fuel treatment, I've noticed it does it more on hills, so I'm now going to replace the fuel filter, and maybe pump if it doesnt fix it, have you had any similar issues or know what could cause somthing like this?

No I believe the 2001 tahoe is different so I think you got the right one and you shouldn't need the special line disconnect tool like I used in the video. Should only need a couple wrenches preferably a line wrench on the fuel line side.
