In this video, we shed light on what makes the Chevy Nova an ultimate favorite among classic car enthusiasts. Whether you're a devoted fan of vintage automobiles, a proud owner of a Chevy Nova, or simply intrigued by the charm of classic cars, this video is a must-watch.
The first generation ran from 1962-1965, with a few notable highlights. Equipped with either a 153 cubic-inch four-cylinder or 194 cubic-inch six-cylinder engine, the Chevy II quickly evolved to include sportier options. The Super Sport, or RPO-Z03, was released in 1963 on the Chevy II Nova 400. Although it wasn’t much of a performance booster, the trim, bucket seats, new instruments, and spiffier steering wheel gave the car a spicier appearance, making it seem sportier than its performance actually was. #ChevyNova #ClassicCar #americanicons
This was the only year that the Chevy II Nova SS was available as a convertible. 1964 The following year brought about a larger, 283 cubic-inch engine, able to generate either 195 or 220 horsepower. Already lightweight, this engine upgrade edged the Chevy II into muscle car territory, with a 0-60 mph in 11.3 seconds and crushing the quarter-mile in eighteen. The final year, 1965, of this first generation delivered additional muscle to the engine in the form of a 327 cubic-inch V8 engine, generating 300 horsepower, available in a Powerglide transmission.
In 1968 the Chevy II name was dropped in favor of simply Chevy Nova. The Nova was redesigned as the Nova SS, was mechanically and aesthetically based off the Chevy Camaro. Outfitted with the standard 350 cubic-inch V8, generating 295 horsepower, there was also the available 396 cubic-inch V8, which boosted horsepower between 350-375.
The L34 option generated 350 horsepower, while the L78 generated 375 horsepower. Only 234 Novas were equipped with the L34 engine configuration, and 667 Novas featured the L78, making them both targets of car collectors. 1969 came and went without many significant changes to the Nova.
An available Yenko Nova 427 cubic-inch eight-cylinder engine generated a maximum 425 horsepower with 460 lb.-ft. of torque, but only 37 were created during that year, making them another classic car collectible. Those of us familiar with car history, or those of us who were alive during the seventies, can attest to the muscle car parade being rained on by emissions regulations, increased safety requirements, and the astronomical price of gas…when gas was actually available. With respect to safety initiatives, automotive manufacturers were forced to decrease horsepower in favor of additional safety features, which resulted in heavier vehicles, straining performance and power.
The 1970 Nova featured a modified 396 cubic-inch engine, which boosted its size to 402 cubic-inches, generating 375 horsepower. With performance no longer a priority, the 1971 Chevy Nova was given a 350 cubic-inch engine, which got a maximum of 270 horsepower. Not surprisingly, after the previous power and performance of earlier Novas, sales of the 1971 Nova started to slip.
Chevy tried to bolster its sliding sales by releasing the Rally Nova, or RPO-YF1, reminiscent of a race car, but without the actual performance of one, and only lasted until 1973. The year 1972 introduced a Nova with a 350 cubic-inch V8 engine, able to get 200 horsepower, while 1973 just brought with it additional compliance with federal regulations, and cosmetic enhancements, including: bigger bumpers and rear side mirrors, as well the availability of a hatchback. More regulations influenced the 1974 Nova, but the biggest change was cosmetic, and came as a “Spirit of America,” one-year option, which unveiled red, white, and blue accented trim levels.
Due to additional regulations, the 1975 Nova now came standard with mechanical changes to the brakes, suspension, and tires. Because of emissions concerns, the 1975 Novas were equipped with catalytic converters to reduce emissions, disc brakes were a required safety feature, as were steel-belted radial tires. In 1976, the Nova’s 262 cubic-inch engine was replaced by a new 305 cubic-inch eight-cylinder engine, as part of the Gold Medalist package, designed in honor of the 1976 Olympic Games.
By 1977, production ended on the Nova SS, and sales plummeted, especially in the shadow of other new Chevy releases. The fourth generation lasted until 1979, but the Nova made an unexpected return in 1985. More than a few collectors gladly ignore models from the 1980s and insist the Nova met its demise in the 70s.

My high school car was a 1973 Nova base coupe. I bought it in 1980 with only 13k on the odometer! It had no power steering, no power brakes, no AC, and no radio! It was powered by a 250ci straight six with a manual "three on the tree" column shift. That old Nova stayed with me for over 20 years and lasted over 300k miles!

My granddad had acquired a 70 two door, used, as a second car. 230/Powerglide; and like yours, no steering, brakes or air. AM radio. Bench seat. I drove it for a couple of years until it started burning oil, then parked it. Wish I had it today. Might still have a six, but the Powerglide would be gone. Probably have a four barrel intake and headers….

I bought a brand new 1975 Chevy Nova Custom coupe in Sandstone paint with Sandstone interior. It had the 350 c.i. V8 with 3 speed auto. It was a mid-range model, but I loved it. I kept it for seven years before selling it and buying a new 1982 Honda Accord 2-door hatchback (also a simple, but great car). The 350 V8 was a good motor ...I even had the car going over 100 mph while briefly racing a co-worker on a quiet highway. The speedo in the Nova only went to 85 but my friend in his Chrysler said I was going 105! I have never driven that fast ever again. I was 19 at the time, and well, you know young guys can be 😂

I agree, cars are no fun anymore and they are boring looking and theres no exitment. My dad and I use to go to all the dealerships near our house just to see what the new ones were going to look like. I use to sneak onto some of the dealerships used car lots and sit in the cars on the lot all day. One time when I was about 11, I got into a 67 Pontiac LeMans and cranked it up because the keys were in it and put it in reverse and backed it up, then went forward for about 2 hours and nobody saw me! Those were the days!

When I got out of the army in 74, I found a SS350/ 4-speed on Selman Chevrolets lot that was ordered by the dealer's son, then quickly taken away from due to speeding tickets. It had 1900 miles on it when I got it. I did not realize what I had then. Catalina Blue Black Stripes with white bucket seats. Very rare Factory Headers. Beautiful car with the factory 5 spoke steel wheels with beauty rings.

(That's when grandpa bought a red 71 Riviera for grandma.) Our first second car. Eventually sold it to a friend of a guy across the street. He promptly ventilated the block. My exwife had a 73 Nova hatchback with baby moon hubcaps on it bought it used in 1976. Had 48K on it with the 307 and TH350 auto...it was a good running car, but 3 days after buying it from the dealer (used) the voltage regulator took a crap kept running but the gen light stayed on...went back to the dealer and they fixed it for free. I ran that car back and forth to chicago from Hobart Indiana to work at prudential insurance for over a year and a half putting about 40K on it never a failure. It was a beast in winter snow didn't bother it at all. We traded it in 78 for a Chevette should have kept the Nova ran alot better than the Chevette did.

our family received a '69 Nova sedan from my grandfather brand new. It may have been basic but it was a fun and reliable compact car. It also had a two-tone paint job, blue with a white roof (not vinyl). In Canada GM marketed a line called Acadian starting in '62, they were Chevy IIs and Novas with slightly altered trim and grilles. They came in Acadian and Canso models. It had to do with the tax laws regarding cars sold in Canada, even though they were made on the same US assembly lines as the Novas. They were sold at Pontiac/Buick dealers across the country. The last Acadians were sold in '68. You may not have love for the 80s Novas, but I thought those looked quite nice. They were certainly handsomer than the Corollas they were based on!

I Loved my ‘73 Nova 2dr Custom. It had factory White bucket seats. I bought it from the original owner in 1996. It had only 60K miles and paid $500 for it. I drove it for over 100K miles and sold it to a 17 year old guy for $3,300. He repainted it in Bright Metallic Blue the first month he had it and flipped it less than a week after repainting it. He was a kid who lived up the road from us. It was an in-line 6cyl with a 2 spd dynaflow transmission. I did put knock off Center lines on it and front springs.

I’d absolutely love to have a 68-72 SS or a 74 Spirit of America Nova. My brother had a 72 SS 4 speed when I was a kid and that was my introduction to fast muscle cars. When I was 15 I was going to buy a 74 spirit of America. My dad had the loan ready to give me, and the guy ended up selling it out from underneath me after a gentleman’s agreement that he’d sell it to me. Only one I’ve ever seen in person.

After the Corvair failed to sell in big numbers for 1960, while Ford's Falcon was a huge success for 1960, the Chevy II was rushed out for 1962 and pretty much copying the Falcon's dimensions and layout. Due to rushing the Chevy II to market, it suffered from quite a few quality issues such as paint runs, and sloppy body welds.

I never cared much for the ChevyII Nova body styling until the new body in 66'. That being said the Chevelle was still my favorite during this time period. Before that the early 60s Implalas were my favorite. Before that the 57 Chevy was my all time favorite Chevy. I knew the 57' would be a classic even before it was a classic. I started school in the early 60s and was already a car nut. Up until 64' our family car was a 55' Rocket 88 Oldsmobile 2 door hardtop.

I can attest to the Nova died with the 76 model. When I came out of boot camp in 1974 I purchased a brand new 1974 nova. She cost 3000 bucks and I had her for a little over 6 years. It had a 250 straight 6 cyl. Automatic .

Back in the 80s I had a 1973 nova. It was red with a white vinyl top , 350 engine and turbo 350 automatic, rally rims, and a hatchback. But only had power drum brakes all around. It at least had AC and power steering. I drove it until it just started falling apart. Mainly the body.

ok, another Nova story,,,, this is like '71 and a guy i knew down the block buys a nice first gen Nova ,,,,maroon with a white top. Nice outside but sick in side. The 6 was dying. He'd just wrecked his Dad's panel truck but saved the drive train,,,,nice little 327. He did the install himself and it rok'd. We lived in a semi rural area and one night, it was parked by a creek across the street and a huge eucalyptus branch fell and killed it. I was walking home and saw him losing his mind. I'm old at 66 but remember like this was last night. Rock and Roll ON!!

Dad's first car was a gold 1970 Nova I6 that he bought used in 1979 for $1,500. He couldn't afford a new starter so he would arc across the points! My grandad (mom's dad) also had a straight 6 Nova he bought new in 1976. He couldn't get his radiator fixed so he pinched off the leaking copper tube and soldered it closed.

Love how the dude in the passenger seat of the gold convertible suddenly slides the seat back, and almost makes a paraplegic out of the lady behind him. 😂 Funny, in my hot-rodding days of the early-mid '70's, I don't remember the Nova SS's being in high demand. Mustangs and Camaros of course, Chevelles, Goats, even the odd Charger R/T, Challenger or Cuda. Maybe because there weren't that many made. In 1970 for instance, they sold around 19,500 Nova SS's, compared to around 226K 2-door sedans. The other issue might have been the car's general "squirrelly" tendencies with a big-block motor installed.😬 The one guy I knew who drove around a buddy's 396 SS for a few hours said the front-to-back weight imbalance was "unnerving". I had a '69 Chevelle SS396 at the time, and I can only imagine all that motor in the front of a Nova. I gotta say though, just the vision of that rat motor in that little car set guys' hearts racing 😍 They were something special. Just knowing they were built at the FACTORY to take that engine was so cool. 😉

Yes I own a 1969 Nova 2 door and I have owned a 1971 Nova 2 door and a 1975 Nova 4 door. A few corrections to add to this video. The Chevy II was never destined to be a "muscle car". It was intended to be an economy car from the start, but eventually GM decided to allow it to have a large engine. They didnt make the Nova from 1962 to 1988, they made the Chevy II from 1962 to 1968, and from 1969 until 1979 called all of them the Nova. Also from 1962-1967 the Chevy II could come as a 2 door sedan in addition to a 2 door coupe, the difference being in the roofline.
