The Cheyenne people did not "battle the US Army for control of the West" we battled the US Army for our existence and survival! The US Army attacked us in our homeland and it was Custer who died attacking the Cheyenne on the Little Bighorn River.
In 2001 I got to realize a lifelong dream, and took my family to see the Custer Battlefield in Montana. The US Park Service did an amazing job trying to tell both sides of the story. I already knew that the US Army rifles were great at long range, but slow to reload and not so great for close range engagements against superior numbers. I knew that many of the native warriors fighting that day had lever action repeating rifles that were superior in short range firepower. I did NOT know that many of the US soldiers who died were German and Irish immigrants, and that the military was the only work available to some of these men. I did NOT know that Custer's often used tactic was to capture women and children and hold them hostage. I do not hate either side in that conflict, but if I were one of the native warriors fighting that day, knowing some guy wanted to kidnap my wife and kids, I'd have slaughtered them to the last man too.

Gary Medicine Bird, grandson of Night Killer, served with me in the Seventh Infantry [formerly the Seventh Cavalry!!] in Vietnam in 1968--1969. His great grandmother had been killed at Sand Creek in 1864, so Night Killer rode with the Sioux and Arapaho until he avenged her death at Little Big Horn in 1876. He lived to be over 100 years old, and Gary remembered him very well.--Tom Reilly

My best friend is a Cheyenne Sioux tribe native member and I love when she tells me her stories and about her culture I don't know why but indigenous culture is all literally beautiful and just reminds me of peace love and reminds me of nature
I have always cherished my Native American ancestry. Though I have no Cheyenne in me (Only Cherokee, Creek and Kaskaskia) I find the history of Plains tribes fascinating and wish that people would stop calling them "savages", "redskins" and other derogatory terms.
Maybe the Cherokee were not savages but the Comanches, Kiowa, Apache, Cheyenne, Sioux and many many more were. If you love your ancestry you should get educated about them. The white man was just one more enemy of the Indian tribes. Most all tribes culture is based on war and that was war with each other. If they had not been so wrapped up with killing each other they could have driven the whites out. Read "Empire of the Summer Moon" which is a history if you want some truths. It also won the Pultizer Prize so it's factual. We moderns want to feel terrieble for what happened to the Indians and I don't like it anymore than anyone else. But their culture was all about becoming a great warior. The male identity and he very manhood was about his Bravery in making war. The older generations of indian men could see that peace with the white was the only way because the indians were out numbered and out gunned but the elders could not stop the young braves from proving themselves. It was an impossible situation that has had a sad ending.

THere are still Cheyennes that speak Cheyenne, Native who live as Natives. Maheo is about to raise the Indians up as promised. THere are no real vikings, no real american black tribalism, or asian american tribalism but Natives still exist. It is common knowledge that Natives are superior warriors to white empire usurpers. Wow, as a non Indian, it always sounds to me like certain tribes were very spread out over such a huge area. For someone from Ireland, the distances to me are crazy. We had our own tribes here of different Celtic bands, the Kellys, the Ryans and so on, but we were all next door to each other!. I love your history and culture a lot.
I’m 70 years of age, since I was 5 or 6 years old, my dream was to be Native Indian. I have a incredible thirst for learning everything I can about all the different tribes. I grew up in Colorado which has a not so nice reputation for dealing with Native people. I admire you all so much and will continue my fascination for how strong you are. Me also! I grew up in Toronto Canada and as far back as I can remember I felt I wanted to be a native! To live as they did! I loved their culture. Every bit of it. I so thirsted for it. But alas, I settled for moving north into the bush and living plainly, building my own home out of log. Trying to learn what nature provides for food and medicine around me.
The reason you all want to be a Native American is because you long to return to a past life when you were one. I am researching all my past lives and know this from first hand experience. I am writing a book on reincarnation. What I say can be proven if people bother to research it properly. I lived with the Arapaho and the Comanche, but in both lives I was a white woman who joined them as a girl. So I was not born into those tribes but I knew the culture pretty well.

Andrew Jackson was a TRAITOR TO the CHEROKEE people and other tribes as well. I don't claim him as a relative. Some of my Cherokee ancestors hid in the Great Smokey Mountains, but others were sent on the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma.
I am Australian but as a child I had many dreams about life as a Cheyenne Warrior and dreamed more than once about having gone into battle knowing I was going to die and laying down my weapons before I did so. In recent years, I started writing - and remembering my recurring dreams as a child I researched all I could to discover if there ever existed a Cheyenne Warrior who died this way. To my startling surprise I started finding bits and pieces about Hook Nose (Woqini) and so I wrote a semi-fictional but historically accurate story about him. I am very happy to share a pdf version and would humbly ask for the views of the current day Cheyenne.
I am a member of the Great Northern Cheyenne Nation, I think you did a good job. I would add in is that there are two tribes of the Northern Cheyenne. The Tsitsisas and the So'taeo'o are actually separate tribes that have united as one.

+Monkey Coder Chihuahua and Sonora are Apache territory, in Northern Mexico. Chihuahua and Sonora are states, and border with Arizona and New Mexico. Geronimo, Victorio, Cochise, Juh, Mangas Coloradas lived in Northern Mexico. There was an Apache Chief called Chihuahua, also there was Comanche Chief called Chihuahua.

I had the great honor and privilege to meet and work with several Native Americans at a retreat in Alaska on traditional lands of the Denai'na. They were Northern Cheyenne. I felt strongly connected to them and honored to speak with them, learn their culture, customs, and traditions, and even participate in their smudging ceremony. They are a great people.

I LOVED your documentary. It was GREAT. There was one thing that I wished you would have elaborated on the Treaty of Fort Larimer. It specifically states, that land in the Dakotas were "not to be used got mineral purposes." This is the reason that pipeline should have never went through. Also, according to this treaty, it was an act of treason on Donald Trump's part as President to break this treaty.

The movie Wind Walker was the first time I ever heard the Cheyenne and Crow languages. That was in 1981 when it was a rarity to hear any Indigenous languages on film especially in its entirety save the narrator Nick Ramus. Since then I learned much about the Cheyenne and that much of their original territory was a part of my home state of Nebraska.

Very interesting for me as Austrian from Europe. When I was a boy I red many books about the wild west. For me, the red Indians were the knights of this land. Don't forget Your real language und do not use the names of the withe occupants. Be proud and wear your traditional cloths. I do this in my country too. We still speak our old bevarian language. German is just for the school. I have my traditional cloths and I wear them with proudness. It's good to have a genuin identity. I wish I could go one day there and visit this people.
Cheyenne language is the Algonquin language of the Algonquin Tribes of the North East and these tribes were chased out of that area and became known as the Sioux as they travels west into the Montana and Dakota areas, and then called the Cheyenne. Some of the Tribe went to the south west areas like Colorado, ad Oklahoma. These 3 Tribes are all related since they are basically the same tribe with several name changes.
Kevin Johnson I think I heard a Cheyenne Indian say that years ago, but of you look at the map the Crow did get a lot of land and they did scout for the us army including Custer.? Being raised in Oklahoma a lot of Cheyenne were here and did escape to the northern plains and the Battle of the Washita is in Oklahoma. So maybe they were right. But according to Lewis and Clark from their Corp of discovery exhibition they reported back to president Jefferson the Sioux were the meanest fighting bunch of all except maybe the Apache and Comanche.

So very true, the REAL history of all native people were white washed so the propaganda was produced to sweep the truth under the carpet. I've seen this type of lies and untruths taught in American schools. I am a proud native Hawaiian, and they used the same tactics to steal our lands, traditions, and way of life. James Williams We respected each other. The Cheyenne were the only people we allied with, we tolerated the Arapaho. We married into each other and our cultures were a lot alike. There’s a lot of families that are Lakota/Cheyenne mixed. Even after defeating them at Battle mountain, we shared the Black Hills with them. The name Cheyenne comes from the Lakota word Sahiyela.

I wish that in every public official gathering that the Native American Indians be mentioned for respect as being the traditional owners of the land so all generations know their existence . They are marginalised and facing extinctions as their ciltures have now been slowly overshadowed by the white cultures.-- With love from the Philippines.
