One Day in Chișinău then the Night Bus to Kyiv! Here's the Rosetta Stone deal: tryrosettastone.com/JohnnyFD-1 (Limited time offer: $179 from $299 for the Lifetime Subscription - Advertisement) I have just one day in the capital city of Chișinău, Moldova before my overnight bus back home to Kyiv, Ukraine. Join me for what the city center looks like, as we meet with a local Moldavian girl to eat their local food, all before my long 13 hour journey from Moldova through the border crossings back in Ukraine and all the way back home to my apartment in Kyiv.

Thanks for sharing your journey with us, Johnny! What I actually wonder about: isn‘t there a night curfew in Ukraine or is it limited to certain cities only? Cause the bus was driving all night to reach Kiev very early in the morning. What you said about 36 hours to get home, well, thanks to Putin‘s war my wife does not know when she‘ll be able to see her mother, who decided to stay in Dnipro despite our urges to leave. Back in 2021 my wife flew to Dnipro vis Kiev from Munich within a few hours, vice versa in December 2021. Dnipro airport, unfortunately, was destroyed by Putin‘s orks. I wonder whether Boryspil airport is still standing…Take care Johnny and be careful and don‘t ignore the air raid sirens. Condolences to families in Winnytsa, Tschasiw Jar, Dnipro and to all having been hurt by Putin‘s aggression. Peace to Ukraine, Freedom and Democracy to Russia, down with Putin‘s terrorist reign!

Glad you made it back okay! I came across these recent trips of yours while watching news on Ukraine - my best bud at work (LA) is from Odesa. I'm also Taiwanese, Californian (San Diegan), and speak some Russian... took 2 years of Russian out of the boredom that was engineering grad school in the late 90s. Your trip has definitely inspired me to learn back some of the languages! Question: Why in all of your recent trips were you wearing t-shirts identifying that you're from Ukraine? Was it to support fellow Ukrainians, or kind of a safety measure traveling thru Eastern Europe while Asian?
@balanrares
@balanrares Год назад
Why would you have trouble in Eastern Europe as Asian? Eastern Europeans love Asians. They don't dislike black people either, they are just uncommon .. you saw the hotel receptionist. Arab people there have been there for hundreds of years. The stories you hear about racist Eastern European probably relate to gypsies ... and that's a different story ...
@brianchiu2837

@@balanrares I see. I've only made it as far east as Berlin, so I really don't know anything about Eastern Europe. Just curious. I've heard great things from my Ukrainian and Romanian friends in LA. Nearly all buses to Ukraine go from Autogara Nord in Chisinau. It's a fantastic bus station. Inside the bus station itself theres some very nice clean shops selling food and drinks. There's a very simple reason for the bus to take the "long" way through the north of Moldova. It's because the direct route goes through Transnistria. Since you've been to Transnistria -- I do not call it by the name you mentioned in the video -- you're aware that Transnistria is a Russian-backed Separatist area. If you think about the politics, it will be clear that Ukraine would be concerned about the presence of a Russian-backed territory on its border. In fact, there have been lots of concerns over the last few months between Ukraine, Transnistria, and Moldova. Ukraine has a couple times made threats - most recently that if Transnistria tried to slap Ukraine, it would receive a pounding in response. You're smart enough that I don't have to spell it out any further. In Google Maps for me, two routes are shown. One goes through Transnistria, the other avoids it, and yes the one avoiding Transnistria takes over 8 hours versus the 6-hour route through Transnistria. I believe I've seen in the news that Ukraine has closed all border crossings between it and Transnistria. I have seen in the news that Americans have a very difficult time currently entering Transnistria. You probably would have been pulled from the bus and sent back to Chisinau or maybe detained. While I found this interesting, it was very cringey to me to hear you speaking Russian in Moldova. The presence of Russian-speakers in Moldova is because of years of Russification, and I believe that was not healthy for Moldova. Moldova, like many other USSR territories suffered greatly, with lots of ethnic Romanians from Moldova being sent to gulags, and Moldova suffered in the second Holodomor like many other territories. Final note - if you had instead gone to Odesa, you might have bumped into Conor Clyde. It would be interesting to see the two of you talk.

Recommendation from living my whole life walking around cities - try to lose some excess weight and slim down the muscles. Your endurance will be a lot better and you won't get as hot and sweaty when walking around the city. Just do something like cycling, jogging, inline skating, calisthenics, etc for muscle toning so you can keep your aerobic stamina. Try getting down to under 200 lbs ideally.
