As a chicagoan this is a ridicouls movie. First Chiraqian's DO NOT i repeat DONT wear colors especially some goofy gang wearing all orange all purple and the girls dating these guys def dont wear the colors? The killing is done by primarly by 13-17 year olds. They almost ALL have dreads. Finally no stripper is going to stop working stop supporting here kids and buying louie purses so some 20 something who aint doing the killing in the first place will put down there guns. Drill music is the biggest influence in Chiraq except dosmey star nick cannon is rapping. The only gamgs that fly colors on a reg basis is Stones and Kings and thats hardly all the te. This movie should have been called anything but Chiraq, this is not what it is LIKE AT ALL FOR ALL THE PEOPLE OUT OF TOWN. I HAVENT HEARD ON POSITIVE REVIEW. S.Lee is the most overrated director in the hisyory of the bussiness! He says " Dont let the name fool you" MUTHAPHUCKERS U, U,U NAMED IT THAT. MOST UNATHENTIC MOVIE IVE EVER SEEN!

It's a dramatisation dude like what next you going to say there's not an omnipotent narrator walking round in a bright orange suit? Like yeah it's unrealistic cos people on the outside wouldn't understand everything going on I think the idea is more to highlight the problems faced in chiraq with an artistic and dramatic edge to it

+Detective Hawk I actually don't believe all of the anger is over Nick Cannon and I do agree that he has worked hard ever since he first came out in DrumLine! In my own opinion neither Spike Lee or any of the cast members appear to be very believable in the trailers to the masses of Chicagonians that expected to see some reality! This may turn out to be the best movie of the year, but did Spike Do the right Thing in his Research and the casting of each of all the characters and the selection of the movie soundtrack that type of thing is what's helping to cause all of this noise ! Ice Cube obviously did Something that Spike Lee didn't do and that's why Barbershop turned out to be sucessful! SPIKE LEE went to school for this and he should know that trailers is what helps sell the movie to the public! I'm also confident that everybody outside of the ChicagoLand area don't understand what all of the anger is all about, but let me go to Los Angeles filming a movie about street gangs that does not exist out there or come out with a Rap album talking about the Life on the mean streets of LA and I'm not from there!

I saw this last night at the London Embankment Garden Theatre (the penultimate night of the BFI festival). I didn't know what to expect but along with 800 other movie-goers my wife and I laughed, cried and ended up applauding wildly. This is a movie that entertains you, moves you and makes you think. It is the best movie of its kind I've seen for years, and while it's reputed to be Spike Lee's most colourful and visually stunning movies to date, it's definitely inspired me to watch more of his movies.
@shanoriya

chicago ppl out here mad at this movie... hahaha haha Your city is referred to as "The City Of Death" & I live in toronto. Clearly the problem is TOO MUCH VIOLENCE! !!! The last thing you need is another movie or rapper spewing more hate into the media. Don't get me wrong Spike Lee could have done a bit more research or made this film a bit more serious. But I get where he's going with the story line, the woman, especially a black woman keeps a house together. She's the backbone, a man may be the head of the house, but the woman is the neck.... she can make the head turn anyway she wants it to. But her problem is that she loves unconditionally so in that she supports the BULLSHIT that these brothers are doing to "survive" How do women is the real world get their man to listen? A. Hold out on the nookie 😉 lol B. Leave in hopes that he comes to his senses

I completely agree with you! Black women are so powerful & strong! I think that black women should seriously consider having an organized sex strike! I am about halfway through this incredible film. The dialogue, the music, the message are all amazing. The plot is based on the Classical Greek Comedy Lysistrata. I am not sure why so many people say it is so awful. Is it the fact it is just so incredibly different? The message is clear: Our nation's leaders spend more on wars overseas than investing in people state side. People are turning against one another all across this nation in an all out shoot out--peasant versus peasant.

So, I was wondering who was rapping at the end of the clip, rapping about his city being Chi-Raq, not Chicago, and all that... and it turns out it is Nick Cannon, who was born in San Diego, CA, and if I'm not mistaken, has NEVER lived in Chicago. That's gotta be insulting to people from Chi-raq. Yes, I get that he is one of the main characters in the movie, but for a topic like this, I feel like it is insulting for them to not have had someone actually FROM Chicago to write/perform the songs on the soundtrack. It becomes especially insulting when you consider how many hip hop artists there are from Chicago. Looking at the soundtrack credits, the only two people on the soundtrack from Chicago are R.Kelly and Jennifer Hudson, both of whom are NOT rappers. Spike Lee was TRIPPING with this one...

Spike is one of my favorite directors, the images evoked are full of life and emotion. Of interest is that Spike and I are planning a movie based on ancient linguistics, That's right the plot revolves around a group of terrorists sent back in time to the knot of the Gastro Intestinal track to remove a blockage. I play the part of a Taurus Bull / Kracken Dragon who is paired with the cardinal direction points of a compass. WE are currently shooting in the country of Estonia and hope to get Kim Cartesian as the lead female role. Spike will also make a cameo appearance as the "Hammer" and Football legend Barry Sanders will play the part of the Apparition in the Misty Nebula. Principal photography has been photographed at all the major hardware chains such as Ace, Menards, True Value, 84 Lumber and Home Depot. The special effects are revolutionary as no other than Ray Harryhausen has been contracted to bring to life what is know as the Pe-Valve. We tried to get Will Farrel but since he is white Spike thought that he could not understand the nature of the anthopomorphications. Will will however be utilized as a hand model that removes the GI obstruction via reason. Look for this joint in theaters world wide on July 16th.

I see people in the comments saying don't judge this movie by it's trailer but that is exactly what the viewing public is supposed to do. A movie trailer is a window to what the movie will be like. I am from Jamaica, a country that also has a high violence rate where the movie Third World Cop has one of the best depictions of violence and corruption in both our country and the black community at large. This movie did not hide from the violence or corruption. But neither did it make fun of it or over do it to the point where too many locals were offended. Jamaicans love the movie and feel it is a true depiction. I have read articles online about Chicago citizens and even aldermen demanding or begging Spike Lee to at least change the name of the movie. Does he have to? No, he has a right to keep the name. But he was not in the right calling Chicago aldermen "bootlickers" because of their criticism. That was both wrong and extremely disrespectful. Also I am certain there are people from Iraq who are also offended. I know that if this movie was called Chi-Jamaica, I would be livid. Maybe Lee did want to stir some controversy but he should have at least kept it within the boundaries of where he was doing this movie. Maybe name is Death-Cago, Chi-Gun (a play on the anime Trigun, hmm I like that one), Blood-Cago or something like that. With all the issues of America and the Middle East right now the name alone is going to stir up anger. In fact tomorrow on my blog I am going to post this and ask if any of my readers would go see this movie. I am staying away from this like Superman avoids Kryptonite. See the movie if you want to but I find it mocking of serious issues and extremely sexist. Sure the ladies can lock their legs but what is with all the gyration? Is this how typical Chicago females behaves. Those scenes made Bridesmaids blush in places. I'm out!

LOL!!! Did Spike Lee honestly think that he should have been nominated as Best Director for his movie Chi-Raq? Let's step back and take a look at the 5 directors who have been nominated: "The Big Short" Adam McKay "Mad Max: Fury Road" George Miller "The Revenant" Alejandro G. Iñárritu "Room" Lenny Abrahamson "Spotlight" Tom McCarthy "The Big Short" Adam McKay 8/10·IMDb 88%·Rotten Tomatoes 81%·Metacritic "Mad Max: Fury Road" George Miller 8.2/10·IMDb 97%·Rotten Tomatoes 89%·Metacritic "The Revenant" Alejandro G. Iñárritu 8.3/10·IMDb 82%·Rotten Tomatoes 76%·Metacritic "Room" Lenny Abrahamson 8.3/10·IMDb 96%·Rotten Tomatoes 86%·Metacritic "Spotlight" Tom McCarthy 8.3/10·IMDb 93%·Rotten Tomatoes 93%·Metacritic All of these movies have very high ratings. Now let's take a look at Spike Lee's Chi-Raq: "Chi-Raq" Spike Lee 5.6/10·IMDb 77%·Metacritic 81%·Rotten Tomatoes I'm pretty sure that the general consensus here is that "Chi-Raq" was not nominated because Spike Lee is black, but rather, these 5 directors made better films and were more deserving. Alejandro G. Iñárritu is Mexican for goodness sake and he is not considered "white." Just because there were no black people that were nominated, doesn't mean that the Academy Awards is racist against black people. It simply means that others had better performance for the year that the films are considered. Black people have won Oscars before. Chris Rock is even hosting the Oscars this year. HOW IS THAT RACISM?!?! If people of color stopped crying "racism" or "lack of diversity" just because it didn't go their way, racism would be less of an issue than it is right now. Go enjoy your Knicks game Mr. Lee. Not many people care what you do because that choice is yours. How would you feel if I told you that I will be boycotting your film "Chi-Raq" because it mainly features black people and therefore lacking in diversity? You'd probably tell me that you won't care because that is my choice.

Also Chiraq is not better than Mad Max but it is definitely better than The Revenant. And the Revenant won best directing over mad max so what makes more sense? Spike Lees comments or the fact that 82% win over the higher percentages of the other nominees.

Lil karmicheal Ok, but it wasn't about reality. You don't watch Malcolm X and say, "you Know i don't see Martin Luthor King, Muhammad Ali, and all the women who obviously helped him." The story he was telling was specifically about black on black crime. Films aren't reality. they're film. Do the Right Thing Is SOOOO unrealistic. It's about the message u wanna get across and what u feel is necessary to the story.

Dear Chicagoans, Please do not criticize the movie until or unless you see it. This trailer is not a good depiction of the movie. It was very creative, informative & eye opening. +Kaiylah Muhammad I agree with you--the trailer doesn't adequately reflect the tone of the movie or the themes of the movie at all. It does the movie a disservice. I wonder if Spike Lee did that on purpose thinking more people would see a movie that appears to be a comedy? It's categorized as satire but the movie doesn't come off that way at all. I was really disappointing in Spike & the movie. I've studied greek literature in highschool & college. I also grew up in the hood & know what's real & what's not. This movie seemed like it was written/directed by a white, middle aged, highschool theatre arts teacher trying to show kids in the hood that Literature can be "hip". It was corny & borderline disrespectful. I understand satire & the complexity of literature very well, but it just felt wrong watching it. Maybe because i thought it was gonna be a "do the right thing" kind of movie. Nick Cannon & Wesley Snipes are not really looked at as embodying black culture. I'm not calling them Uncle Tom's or nothing, we all appreciate Snipe's work in Sugar Hill & Nick in Drumline, but outside of that they don't really identify with today's black youth. This movie was so bad. Trojans vs Spartans, come on bro. I have more respect for Quentin Tarrantino & Django, after watching this. Don't be a Menace to Society was more of a respectful film than this was. I thought black people from Chicago were just being too sensitive at first. But when i saw this it didn't feel like a Chicago city. The slang & mannerisms sounded like TX/ ATL/Dirty South at times. WOW, Spike takes an L on this one. I would be really ashamed if watched this movie with anybody from another race.

+Soul on ice 82 I didn't see the film,caught glimpses when the family was watching,not to mention finding out it was just about denying thugs sex...I lost interest. Like your 1st paragraph said,I thought it was going to be a "do the right thing" type of movie. disappointed it wasn't. I think if he's was trying to get a message to the youths,he should use younger rising/unknown actors. I don't think they need to be really famous as much as seeing someone their age/color might help them "identify" with the character better. Why didn't you like Django? N word tossed around too much for you?
@CrudeVigilante
@CrudeVigilante 8 лет назад
+Soul on ice 82 It's literally tackling two issues at once. While bringing literature into the equation and bringing a modern and blatant approach of this being a play while discussing and bringing awareness of the murder rates that exist in Chicago. I do understand how it was a misconception of how viewers believed this was going to be a breathing documentary-like film showing the in and outs of the problems existing in Chicago, but it's not that. They didn't want to do that. If you want that, you make it. But to complain about something that they were not hiding at all makes no sense.
@OakCliffTX82
@OakCliffTX82 8 лет назад
CrudeVigilante I'm not complaining, i'm giving my critique of the movie. People weren't expecting a documentary, they just weren't expecting a satire. People expected a classic Spike Lee movie, like Do The Right Thing, School Daze, Crooklyn, 25th Hour. Clockers, etc. Nobody expected a satire from one of the most socially conscious directors, taking on a very serious issue he cares passionately about. The movie didn't really touch on the issues surrounding violence in Chicago. I didn't mention city planning that limits economic opportunity in certain areas leading to feeling of hopelessness. It didn't mention underfunded schools, it didn't mention notable community leaders who have been killed (high profile case) while trying to end gang violence. It didn't involve the people of Chicago or anyone of notoriety who opposes the violence there. That's why many people of Chi-town were so mad. The movie was out of touch and missed with the younger generation. Had anyone outside of NY made a movie like that about NY, Spike would feel the same way as people do about Chiraq. It, in no way, shed any light on any issues other than the one "movement" by women to stop violence by withholding sex. That's why it tanked, got bad reviews, and will go down as one of the worst "black movies" ever. I take no pleasure in saying that, its just how the film is viewed within many black communities. And seeing as how that wasn't its intended purpose, i don't think pointing that out is "complaining". I'm not from Chicago, so i'm not taking it personally. I was just dissapointed with the film.
@iansmart4158
@iansmart4158 8 лет назад
🤔. Ok so you're saying that spike made a disrespectful film because he actively highlighted the idiotic and stupid ideals that killers live by in that city? Do the right thing is a CARTOON. It's over the top and extremely unrealistic but it works because he uses the stupid characters and funny moments and crazy ppl to show how ludicrous and complicated racism is. Chiraq does the Sam but with crime amongst blacks and of cops against blacks. You seem intelligent but if you've seen do the right thing at least once, the. U can easily see when u watch the movie what's to be taken seriously and what's there to make u think about how buffoonish these men are and the stupid motivations. For their crimes. The film is extreme satire and don't me a menace made light of killings in Compton and south central. Y is that allowed but this isn't? This is a far more thoughtful movie.
@OakCliffTX82
@OakCliffTX82 8 лет назад
Ian Smart "The true focus of revolutionary change is never merely the oppressive situation that we seek to escape, but that piece of the oppressor that is planted deep within each of us" - Audre Lorde - Do the Right Thing & Menace II Society both speak to this on many levels. Chiraq had very little to do w/ any of the other factors leading to the violence & was ALMOST entirely about the "no sex" tactic the women used. While it did ridicule the idiocracy of gangs and fighting over corners & colors, it didn't touch on any of the other real factors that give birth to that mentality. It mildly eluded to the fact that the same gang violence being played out in real life, is similar to the violence in greek literature/culture. DTRT and Menace had psychologial, socio-economic, cultural themes that are deeply rooted in racism and are ingrained into the fabric of our society. It brought to light things we don't always see in the black community. It humanized people living in these situations without glorifying the violence, and showed the real impact our choices have. DTRT is nowhere near as cartoonish as Chiraq. I know people who act like almost every character in DTRT. I have been in similar racial situations, where all the people involved knows the next thing said/done can have drastic outcome. Luckily none of them erupted like it did in DTRT, but they very well could have. 20-30 yrs later, we have seen actual cases in court/news play out EXACTLY like scenes in DTRT. It showed how police/people are more likely to put aside objectivity and sympathize w/ those who look like themselves or come from similar backgrounds. Which can further intensify that hidden racism we all have. (the police were Italian and asked Sal when he would leave that neighborhood = bias= disregard for people in the community they "serve & protect").(mookie felt pressured to respond a certain way so he didn't feel like an Uncle Tom... something almost every black male has felt at some point). It showed how intent comes before content. How our reality is shaped by what we allow ourselves to be influenced by. (radio raheem was listening to PE's 'fight the power", that along with the mob mentality that set in, led him to be a little more aggressive than he probably should've been. He was often potrayed just sitting around listening to music, instead of doing something productive with his time... which will always lead to ruin). It showed how italian, korean, indian store owners set up business in black communities, but don't always have cultural awareness or sensitivity towards their patrons. In fact, many resent the very customers they serve and treat them like criminals. It plays a part in racial tension which leads to self-fulfilling prophecy. "fine, you wanna treat me like a criminal, i'll just steal from your store". While Sal didn't seem to be overtly racist, one of his sons picked up a racist mentality (which is very prevalent in Italian communities towards blacks), probably from off handed comments Sal made about black people. (Racism is taught) Don't be a Menace wasn't a satire, nor did it make light of violence. It showed how nonchalant young thugs can be about taking life, until one of theirs is taken. It showed the trap of those who attempt to leave bad situations only to be consumed by perpetuated violence. It showed how young kids become numb to their situation and end up imitating what they see around them because they don't know any better. It showed the generational disconnect between church going elders and young people who believe in nothing. It even touched on a few issues within the criminal correction system. All of those things are issues the black community doesn't really want to talk about, or not always cognitive of. There is a reason that DTRT and Menace are iconic films across cultures and economic backgrounds, whereas most black people hated Chiraq and most white people didn't bother watching it.

I grew up watching Spikes movies from She's gotta have it, to Malcolm X, and my favorite School Daze. His take on on the social idioms of Black America was new and refreshing. For the first time in a long time we had a person of our skin hue who was intelligent enough to translate to us and the world the plight of being Black in America. However, a lot has changed since then. No longer is Spike New and refreshing but rather stale, dull and repetitive and quite frankly boring. Most of his movie are satire which follow the typical Spike Lee formula. Hell this trailer for Chi-raq looks like Do the Right Thing and School Daze. which the latter two were good films that were spot on in their critique of Black America. Unfortunately Chi-raq is not, and its a far cry from the realities that are happening in Chicago segregated west and south-side. He could of touched on the good people that are struggling to make ends meets while beset with gentrification, school closing and food deserts. But no he chose to make a satire about a dire situation for Black and Latin Americans that sheds no light on the issue nor does it give hope to the hopeless who are stuck. I'm afraid Spike Lee is so far removed from common black america that he is out of touch and off target with Chi-raq

Dave Chappelle and Samuel L. Jackson in a movie together should be enough to want to see it, but Nick Cannon and Spike Lee's shitty direction is enough to make me not want to see it. Let alone the fact that it's taking a serious situation in Chicago and a prestigious play and turned them into an unintended parody.. FAIL

+blazetieftw perhaps failure is what awaits you should you decide to not be open-minded enough to give a movie a chance (by watching it, not looking up what ppl say about it online) before passing judgment. or not.

+NahYoChill I'm not judging the movie as a whole, I'm judging the trailer and the people involved that I'm already familiar with. The whole point of a trailer is to make people want to pay their hard earned money to see it and personally, it's not working for me. If you want to see it it's cool. I might check it out out of morbid curiosity but I most likely won't.

It was an intended PARODY. He's poking fun at hoe idiotic and stupid the senseless violence in Chicago is. And it has very serious moments that are heart breaking. All spike lee movies even the best ( do the right thing, Malcolm x) have humor life and passion behind them. And they're great like this movie is

This is such a great take on Lysistrata.

Anyone else think Lysistrata as soon as they saw this? If not, look it up - the "no sex until the violence stops!" is one that goes back to Greek theater.
