Chic Airport Outfit Secrets: Be comfortable & classy while traveling

I always wear a blazer - one to have something to put on when it gets cold, two because of pockets, and three of course because it makes the most casual outfit look put together and classy

Something I’ve learned as a frequent flier is not to wear pants that are too wide-legged - it is not practical or hygienic if you have to use the bathroom in the airport or in the airplane.

When I was a little girl in the 60s, flying was an elegant experience. I had to wear a dress!! People were mannered, and you were served an actual meal....

When I travel, I usually take into consideration how long the journey is when choosing my outfit. If it’s less than 4 hours, then yes, I’ll do my best to care and look nice. But if it’s over 5 hours, I’m choosing comfort over style, because I know at some point I’m going to be so tired the last thing on my mind will be my style. All I want is to get to my destination, take a shower and sleep…

I so agree with you! I just once had a bad experience with light colors and since then I preferred something darker. Shoes ... mmmmm I wore my sneakers and took them off on a night flight and when I wanted to put them back on, my feet got so swollen! It felt like 2 sizes too small but I will never leave my seat without shoes! Dressing better just makes you feel better. People are too sloppy lately! Thanks for all your excellent tips!

A few cautionary remarks from experience. Don't take a cloth bag with you as they can absorb liquids if you have to put them on the floor, even for a moment. Once I was taking just a short flight within California and I brought a canvas bag for a carry-on. I put it on the carpet and it soaked up coffee, which I did not notice until I put the bag on my lap! That leads to second caution: be careful with light colored pants as they can get dirty so easily even if you try hard to stay clean. Also, no super wide legs as they can drag when you sit and absorb substances. No long skirts or dresses for the same reason and in case you need to ascend stairs as can happen in many airports. It is hard to lift your skirt and manage your carry-on with people pushing all around you. Also, button front shirts - another caution. I thought I looked so neat and tidy with my white button front shirt until I caught a reflection of myself in the airport recently. Some of the front buttons must have popped open when I put my carry-on bag on my shoulders after flying all night. I was so tired and didn't notice. I was walking around with my bra showing and no one told me!! From now on, no more button-up blouses for me on a plane!

I wear mostly tailored clothes but I have specific body skimming sweaters and well fitting, slightly tapered trousers with discreet elasticized waistband that I wear when traveling. They are in neutral colors so I keep a monochromatic color scheme and both pieces are very comfortable to wear for long hours. As for footwear, I usually wear sandals or loafers. I do keep a pair of socks in my bag that I wear on the plane if my toes get cold. I don’t take handbags with me other than my carry on bag that matches my luggage. I use clutch bags instead of shoulder bags in general so they’re small enough to fit into my carry on bag.

By being so greedy, both the regulatory agencies that oversee the airlines and the airlines themselves, created this situation over the years by changing the configuration of the seats to cram as many people as possible into each plane! While I'm not old enough to remember how people used to dress up for air travel, I do remember when there was enough room between the rows that one could comfortably recline one's seat without making the passenger behind you thoroughly miserable!

Also GETTING TSA PRe CHECK, or Global Entry or Clear is so amazing because I love that I dont have to take off my shoes anymore

Thank you so much for your recommendations. I work as a Ground Staff at a big european airport. It is absolutely necessary to wear comfort clothes to avoid medical incidences on board but please think about that you get in contact with real men and women who on duty and most of us try to do our best to fulfil your wishes and let a flight depart on time as well as my colleages on board do their best.. I like this video. My flights are usually 14 hours from US to India. The difference in climates is a huge factor as for as as the distance. I usually go from very very cold weather in the winter from US to a very very hot climate in India. I usually don't travel that much except for this trip where I've gone about six or seven times. So some of the ideas that you are talking about or very helpful.

I used to dress up for the airplane or for cruises and let me tell you I recently did my first flight in sweatpants and it was incredible. I had 18 hours of travel and I was so comfortable. It was the first time I wasn’t cold on a plane and I loved it. I also got to wear tennis shoes which really came in handy for my return flight when I had to run to the plane because there wasn’t enough time in my layover to get through passport control and security. So don’t hate us ! We just wanna be comfortable 🙈

I always wear a knee length flared jersey dress with a light scarf or shawl topper depending on the season and slip shoes for flights. Dresses are so easy in the bathroom! My rule for flying is this: Dress comfortably and as if you'll be meeting someone special on arrival - because even if youre not, you just might...

Anna, you probably noticed, but there's a delay between visuals and audio 😢

I always wear dresses when travelling because I feel most comfortable in them and dresses, especially soft and stretchy do not restrict me in any way. I also always bring a cardigan to wear during the flight because I feel cold. I have a few thick long cardigans and they go with the dresses really well. I do wear heels but I'm usually taking them off during the flight and put compression socks on. Always works well for me. I look elegant and I'm comfortable.

I’m definitely going to try a long cardigan or blazer next time I travel. I like a flat shoe that I don’t have to unlace at security!

Love this! I have seen fashion "experts" recommend the matching sweats to wear like you showed not to wear. They were elevated sweats but still, you can be comfortable and wear something less frumpy. I have always been one to go for comfort but people have taken it too far with the sweats and leggins.

I loved to travel in long dresses, now it depends. For sure, the outfit should pass 3 criteria: 1) Is it for outdoors 2) Natural fabric 3) Impressive look.

I remember going to Bolivia in my favorite boots, knee length skirt, even a hat - traveling “old school” just gave me more confidence to handle it.

I thought I was the only one that called my airplane outfit pajamas. I bought Jimmy Choo sneakers with pearl accents for my travel days and I receive so many compliments. They elevate the pj look.

See I dont dress fancy on planes because usually im flying at night and going straight to the hotel and straight to bed especially if its a late flight. Now I completely understand if its a business trip or a day flight where you’re going straight to your location. I personally like a cute matching set, comfort shoes, and like just have my hair and skincare done. I tend to fly at night/evening so when I land at like 9-10pm, getting in a car, and I am going straight to the hotel, and showering and getting immediately into my bed. But I definitely think if its a day flight or a business trip you need to dress appropriately. 😊 i also like materials that breathe and arent sticky i tend to fly to very hot climates and there is nothing worse than sweaty clothes!

My father was a career pilot and taught me: when flying do not wear rubber bottom shoes. Try to always wear leather shoes when you travel because ( Heaven forbid!) if there’s a crash, or fire in the cabin, the last thing you want is your shoes melting in burning jet fuel. In plane crashes, this is a very real danger.

I flew the other week and was looking for this exact video from you prior 🙂 I do not have a private jet (LOL), so I wear the following: -close toed shoes with socks. I’ve needed to run plenty of times in an airport. I will switch out these socks after TSA check in a dirty bag, and put on a clean pair before putting my shoes back on. -clothes I can sweat in. The variances in temperature, the lugging of my carryon and backpack, and walking/running I always have to do all make me sweat. Airlines pack you in like sardines. Their jetbridges are usually so stuffy and hot, especially in the warm months. I need to dress in items I can wash in the hotel sink if need be. I’ve dressed more elegantly before on flights, and I am always miserable sadly. To be clear, I am not sloppy. My airline-wear fits me well, is stylish, and is practical. -pleated trousers with an elasticated band. These pants have belt loops so I can dress them up, if needed, but I’m pregnant right now and prefer the stretch. It’s an elegant trouser pant from Alo. -a short sleeve top. This allows me to be comfortable when the temperature varies upward. -a button down collared long sleeve shirt on top to keep me warm and covered when the temperature dips. -I always have fresh hair and very light makeup with spf on. -light jewelry. I never bring my most prized jewelry. -I am on the lookout for fitted linen or merino wool travel clothing….wink, wink, Anna!! 😉 I don’t mind the wrinkling (I bring a travel steamer, and I can wash easily in the hotel sink), but I have yet to find a brand that is for tall women. I need an inseam of at least 33.5 inches (I’m 5’8” or 5’9”, so not tall, but most brands make clothes for 5’5” and below! It’s frustrating, as items really don’t fit). Consider adding travel wear to your brand, please 🙏 Linen and merino. Please don’t use plastic materials. Please make the inseam long enough for ladies like me. I’ll buy every color ❤

I always dress up for traveling, I always have. Pleated slacks, even a hat. Consequently, my daughter asks, “How do you always get bumped up to first class?” 😊

Love your tips, even though my flights tend to be under 2 hours. I love cardigans for travel. Something not mentioned (and a reason not to wear your gym shoes) is gym shoes often smell worse when people take their shoes off, compared to dressier shoes, just from the sweat of the workouts.

Beautiful outfits but I don't know that I could do it. I'm super sensitive to cold temps. I normally wear a ton of layers (2 pairs of pants, cabin socks, multiple long sleeve tops) and am still cold when I fly! I would freeze if I tried these outfits 🥶

Good quality cotton simple plain trousers - versatile comfortable and respectable

Safety is elegant. Wear something that can help you at the emergency landing, natural matetials that will not melt to your skin in the case of fire, shoes that will be on your feet even you get upside down, sleak clothes that will not hang you by your neck when you depart the plane through the emergency door, and a bag conviently attached to your body with identity documents and blood type information.

O get súper cold on airplanes and I have yet to find a nice cardingan that warms me like a feather puffer jacket. I don’t wear coats because they suffer on flights hehe help

Heels are great, the only "walking" is from security to the gate. There is not walking really involved on the plane. They are easy to take off and put on, and heels are better to go to the bathroom plane.

I freeze to death in airplanes 🥶 and my journeys are 8hr + so I definitely am guilty of over layering

Trying to flying in Economy for over 30 hours. Comfortable & presentable as much as humanly possible is the goal. Its either too hot or too cold depending on what the mood of the pilot is or what airport you’re connecting through. For me as Im also a super clean freak i wear cuffed jogging pants ( no loose yoga pants due to the restroom conditions) & a long sleeve shirt with a pullover sweatshirt as it freezes once you hit 32,000 feet up. Since im always cold I carry thick socks & gloves to wear specially during December/ January months.

Many years ago a lady sitting next to me on a plane shook her fountain pen and ink flew all over my white pants and yellow twin set. Since then I wear black which I hate, but I’m still traumatized. 😂😎

I avoid anything flowy on the bottom-floors, airports, train stations, gas stations etc. are gross. I don’t want anything touching the floor except the bottoms of my shoes (usually a simple flat) and I wipe the bottoms with a Lysol wipe before removing my shoes. I definitely almost always wear black (80% of my wardrobe) or a neutral colour). It is usually a black top and a black bottom with a long cardigan. I loathe anything with logos (even high end- like the Chanel for example you show in the video of approved travel wear) I am not a walking advertisement. Definitely not a fan of sweats and bulky sneakers, I loathe the gym look. I keep my look minimal, clean and put together.

I am a man, and I find your videos eye-opening, even though I am gay. Everyone can learn something from your videos.

It depends on where and how many hours you're gonna travel. If you have 4 connected flights, fly altogether 20 hours +layovers - you'd better wear comfortable clothes and have at least tops and socks to change during the trip. Your look will be the last thing to worry and think about.

I am never comfortable on a plane as I have to wear compression tights, so no matter what I wear actually 😊 normally I wear casual jeans, sneakers, t shirt with hoodie

I hate the way people dress nowadays. I always dress up and the airport is no exception. Style doesn't have to be sacrificed for comfort. Flats, sneakers, longer dresses, nice shirts that for me utilize a regular bra, sweaters and soft outer layers and scarves look great and are comfortable for travel. Having your hair done and face looking good are keys as well.

My go to is a shirt dress with white sneakers

I miss back in the days

For travel, I usually wear a navy “set” of: cotton-knit, unlined classic blazer (Ralph Lauren) and slim cashmere/cotton knit joggers. Underneath I wear a white/ivory silk knit top or tank, with a thickness and sleeve length determined by the season, then a blue and white silk scarf. I need breathable all-natural fibers and knits are so comfortable, but this outfit looks almost as polished as a suit. Shoes are critical, I usually wear my pair of navy slip-on woven leather sneakers, also from RL, or my taupe suede ones. These are as comfy as any other sneakers, but are breathable and easy-on easy-off for security checkpoints. All-silk undies and socks (Tabio) are essential. Alternately, I wear a comfortable knit midi-dress with a knit blazer, they will work better than my usual mini length dresses, or a maxi length, for travel (these can get caught on things or drag in floors). I love knit blazers for their flattering structure, with the comfort of a cardigan, for travel, they look so much better than a sweatshirt or hoodie, or even a “nice” cardigan, which has less shape. A few pieces of fashion jewelry that looks like the real thing in “gold”, is a nice addition, too. The one thing I would never, ever wear is jeans, they are miserably uncomfortable for sitting and don’t look good, either.

In a month i will take a 4 hrs flight wait in an airport 2 hours AND THEN 8/9 hour flight!!!! So im looking for inspiration as to what to wear (i get really cold in the plane and i don't want stomach/bathroom issues) 😂

I now recommend a nice maxi skirt... because of the unfortunate airport & airplane bathrooms (too disgusting). Plus, you can tuck it up or tie it to make is short if it's too long as you sit in your seat or when walking.
