Portillo’s is a fast-casual restaurant chain considered a one-stop-shop for iconic Chicago foods. Founded in 1963 in the Southwest suburbs of Chicago, Portillo’s is known across the country for its hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, cheese fries, and chopped salads. But its best-kept secret is the restaurant’s cake shake. Insider's Medha Imam visited Portillo’s Summit, IL location to learn what goes into making the iconic cake shake. @@charlottefinnegan8136 Not so much about large people, is it? Many people find it very difficult to lose weight because of genes or hormonal imbalances, etc... even if they do eat right. It's just that America is continually and pro-actively searching for ways to make their people more gluttonous and unhealthy for a quick buck. Has anyone ever had leftovers from a cake and thought 'Lemme put this in a blender and guzzle it down because that'll make it taste better.' People would think you're a disgusting hog. It's in slight bad taste. Then again, most people aren't scheming up ways to make millions of dollars from friggin' leftovers. Hey, it's a free market and everyone is responsible for their own diet. I don't care. It's just pretty culturally... erm... typical.

Adults and kids alike do it here. It’s pretty common to see at least one person do this. Even if you’re in a school uniform, and people may judge, a lot of people like it. That’s kinda why Burger King came up with the idea to put ice cream and fries as a menu item here for some time. Mayo is literally just eggs and oil, there’s nothing at all weird about putting mayo in a cake Edit: Ok I have never had so much activity on a RU-vid comment...yes ok I checked a jar of mayo and while it does not have mustard or “spices” as some commenters have claimed it does have some lemon and vinegar. However those ARE sometimes also used in cake, you can add them to the milk to make “soured milk” which approximates buttermilk, I have done this with many cakes. So I still maintain that regular mayo is not at all weird to use when making a cake.

Nipun sharma the base of mayo is really just egg and oil whipped together so adding to a cake really just helps to keep the cake’s structure, moistness, and etc and sour cream is more like thick buttermilk which adds some liquid but acidic for a soft texture plus a lil more fat or the cake is dry

when I went to order the cake shake, there were only two sizes. Small and Large, I said I wanted medium and the woman replied ' we dont have a medium, you can get a small, out small is as big as a medium' then I remembered which country Im in right now. Tastes amazing. The cake is very fluffy, moist and melts in your mouth. It would be better if they put a bit less of that icing or atleast put less sugar in the icing

Lily Belle I disagree it’s flavorless and I hate canned frosting. The only thing going for it is it’s really moist. Homemade cake is so much better. Portillo’s cake is just doctored box mix they use mayo and they use canned frosting. The cake you bake off of the Hersey’s special dark cocoa container is far better and more flavorful with the same really moist texture try it.

@@exoticcats6119 do you though? Because I have spoken to quite a few americans who ALWAYS blame medications and/or genetics for their excessive weight. Noone ever mentions foods being hella sweeter and more fatty than in other countries. I have tried American soda that almost made throw up and I can't understand why it's so much sweeter than in the EU. There is more sugar definitely.

Even if I didn't see them pouring the cake base in from a type of box cake, it is almost impossible and highly impractical to replicate the smooth sheen of a finished, set box cake cake. They also admit to using regular frosting as well. What you get is quite replicable in your home kitchen, but I've no doubt their years of dedicated experience have perfected the art. What a cute restaurant

theres no art to it though, its just a box cake and they learned how to use the settings on a mixer. anyone who is vaguely familiar with baking knows that different mixing speeds can get you different results. you could buy the cake slice at the restaurant for nearly four dollars when you could make a whole cake at home for even cheaper. it just seems ridiculous to me

Yea I'm from texas. At the annual rodeo there's fried ice cream that's served with a candy bar-usually also fried. We also have fried cheesecake but I'm not sure abt regular cake because it's too soft
