HD audio for "25 Or 6 To 4" by Chicago, from the album Chicago II.
Chicago 25 or 6 to 4 Lyrics:
Waiting for the break of day
Searching for something to say
Flashing lights against the sky
Giving up I close my eyes
Sitting cross-legged on the floor
25 or 6 to 4
Staring blindly into space
Getting up to splash my face
Wanting just to stay awake
Wondering how much I can take
Should I try to do some more
25 or 6 to 4
Feeling like I ought to sleep
Spinning room is sinking deep
Searching for something to say
Waiting for the break of day
25 or 6 to 4
25 or 6 to 4

This song was a hit in the summer of 1970 and really didn't sound like anything else at that time. To this day I don't really think of this as a song, but rather a journey. This was also the summer of CCR who had string of top 10 hits, but really nothing as solid and driving like this track. Coming off the heels of the Beatle's last gasps, it was just what the world of music needed at that summer. As the intro builds from one guitar, to the bass and drums --we have an extremely unusual brass chart that all of a sudden hits this quick dut-dut-dut-dut-dut right in its middle. Okay, now we're listening.. The verse continues on with the same descending bass chord progression, with still some more brass blasts, then goes into a rather simple three-chord chorus with some amazing lead guitar licks interwoven with the lyrics. After another verse and chorus we get that timeless rousing and amazing guitar solo from Kath that is still considered a coup for any life-long student of the instrument if he is ever able to nail it. . When the vocals return there's even more amazing Kath licks in the verse and chorus as the brass drives on and then we have one of the most amazing song endings in the history of rock music. It takes us all by surprise as the brass suddenly blasts a previously unplayed minor chord. As it creeps down to another minor chord, it sublimely tells us all “now THIS is different” we now realise what we have been listening to was something like a charging freight train slamming its brakes, as its journey is about to end. As it slows down even more, the chords just blast out long and hard and become even more discordant. As it all finally comes to a screeching halt, you can almost see the sparks flying from the wheels right on that still extremely harmonically unstable and unresolved chord finishing up the journey the song has taken us on..

They were played constantly on both AM and FM radio rock stations. They were not underrated, nor was Terry Kath. Their first three (5?) albums were masterpieces! They veered off into pop and that dissapointed many, including me. Terry was amazing! But he kinda got pushed to the background as Peter started getting love for his awesome voice- and that's even oversimplifying it. Members had different personal musical likes and they (as a whole) and the general public gravitated to Peter's voice and ballads blah blah blah. In my opinion, they just kind of petered out over time as their effort to sell more records gradually replaced their desire to ROCK.

At their best...pretty much those first 5 albums, they might be my favorite band of all-time after The Beatles...just great, another music stirred my soul. In my honest opinion when I heard 25 or 6 to 4 I immediately thought committing a crime to gain a substantial amount of money in turn of getting a possible 25 to life sentence vs working a 6 to 4 which is what a good majority of people do in order to make ends meet while having your own thoughts and processes suppressed. I know the explanation was already explained but that’s just my two cents.

Donna Swan It wasn’t due to a gun, it was due to improper knowledge about guns, he pulled the clip out and jokingly put it to his head and pulled the trigger, not knowing that there was one in the chamber. If he had educated himself about guns he’d probably be alive today.
@donnaswan347
@donnaswan347 5 лет назад
@@boataxe4605 It was still due to a gun. Not a statement against guns, just letting those who didn't know, just how he had died. Apparently, according to family & friends, he often brought out his gun collection to show people. He was urged to not be playing around with them, but as so often happens with anything, we can tend to get 'careless' if we get too used to handling them. Still very sad. He was educated about guns and he should have known better but just got careless...unfortunately.
@donnaswan347

"By 1978, Kath was regularly carrying guns around and enjoyed shooting them. Around 5 p.m. on Monday, January 23, after a party at the home of roadie and band technician Don Johnson, in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, Kath began to play with his guns. He spun his .38 revolver on his finger, put it to his temple, and pulled the trigger. The gun was not loaded. Johnson warned Kath several times to be careful. Kath then picked up a semi-automatic 9-mm pistol and, leaning back in a chair, said to Johnson, "Don't worry about it ... Look, the clip is not even in it." To assuage Johnson's concerns, Kath showed Johnson the empty magazine. Kath then replaced the magazine in the gun, put the gun to his temple and pulled the trigger. Apparently unbeknownst to Kath, the semi-automatic had a round in the chamber. He died instantly from the gunshot, eight days shy of his 32nd birthday."

Lamm says it's simpler than that. "The song is about writing a song. It's not mystical," he says. Take a look at some of the lyrics: Waiting for the break of day--He's been up all night and now it's getting close to sunrise. Searching for something to say--Trying to think of song lyrics. Flashing lights against the sky--Perhaps stars or the traditional flashing neon hotel sign. Giving up I close my eyes--He's exhausted and his eyes hurt from being open too long, so he closes them. Staring blindly into space--This expression can be seen often on the faces of writers and reporters. Trust me. Getting up to splash my face--Something you do when you're trying to stay awake, though a good cup of Starbuck's does wonders for Cecil and me. Wanting just to stay awake, wondering how much I can take--How far can he push himself to get the song done? Should I try to do some more?--This is the line that makes many think it's a drug song. But it is just as easily construed as a frustrated writer wondering if he should try to do some more lyrics/songwriting. As for the curious title, Lamm says, "It's just a reference to the time of day"--as in "waiting for the break of day" at 25 or (2)6 minutes to 4 a.m. (3:35 or 3:34 a.m.)

Gary Gierloff Before passing judgment on a comment, you must sometimes think about the reasons that could justify it. You are Lucky to have had the time to listen music during the 70s. At that time I was working during the day and I had to go to the university in the evening. I did not have money to go to the university during the day. Thank God, Montreal University was offering bachelor and MBA in Information technology in the evening. So, I was used to listening only classical music in my car on the way to the university and back to home. So, now I have the time to discover old popular groups and singers. I like some of them; and, I not a fan of others.

A (police) badge is a symbol of dutiful merit, given to one who has taken an oath and has sworn to uphold the US Constitution with their very life, if necessary. Not the demands of hurt feelings, tyrannical career politicians or false narratives created to control the non-thinkers with fear. When that oath is not upheld, the badge and power it represents must be removed. All politicians should be given a badge, the same pay, same criticism, same liabilities and they must be held to the same level of accountability as the police are. The punishment for treason is death. They cry out wanting more laws, to give themselves more power and control. "If we scare them enough, they'll do anything we say" - that's a horrible mentality that clearly shows psychotic traits and characteristics. Just watch any MSM or how certain politicians (Hill Billary) project their own crimes (quid pro Joe) onto their opponents (anyone who is willing and able to think and has read the constitution). But they avoid any hint of mentioning treason laws and punishments. Kind of like Ken Block avoids straight lines. The silent majority is about to unmute, we've grown tired of the lies, scandals, corruption, blatant abuse of power, neglect of duties, how they take advantage of the fearful and their refusal to keep their oaths. Allow yourself to love and you will be loved. Fill your heart and mind with hate and your life will consist of hate and misery.
