#Chicagoapartments #Wrigleyville #Lakeview #Northsidechicago #cityliving Hey everyone! Today's video we're apartment shopping! I'll be showing y'all studios and few one bedroom options. I'll keep you all updated on my moving journey!
Also check doors and locks! I knew someone that would get locked inside their room unintentionally because the door had trouble opening after being closed.
The $820 one is good enough for me. Nice sized and you can even turn that little dressing room next to the bathroom into a bedroom. Plus the neighborhood is nice and clean and quiet, that's what you mostly pay for, the location. It's good to keep on the low end of your budget as long as it is comfortable for you because if you can be happy with less room and paying less, you will always be happy as you progress in your career because you'll have more spending money rather than spending it on housing.
No way. The $1250 one bedroom is the way to go. It is less money per square foot, and it has a pool. Large living spaces, thick soundproof walls, natural light (meaning windows), gas stoves, hardwood floors, outdoor spaces (like a porch), proximity to stores & restaurants & public transportation, plus Pools & Fireplaces make life really good.
I lived over the North Side ( Roger's Park ) when I first moved to Chicago in 2019. The North Side has alot of relatively cheap and big apartments ( mine was a 1 bedroom, 900 square ft for 975 bucks.) It's nice looking over the North Side but the vibe sucks. Neighbors who don't speak, the looks, and just the overall vibe wasn't welcoming to me as an Afro-American. I bought my home over the South Side after staying up there for a year and I love it! It's good to be back in a neighborhood with friendly neighbors and a good welcoming vibe. Yes you may find a "cheap" apartment, but the microagressions and culture shock and even attitudes from the Blacks who do live up there ( got sick of hearing, " oh we don't go to the South Side ), isn't worth it. Please try to find an apt in Hyde Park.
That’s interesting. I’ve lived in Rogers Park since 2011 and have had no bad experiences with racism or micro aggressions. It’s really mixed with a heavy African population and everyone is really friendly with everyone. The only issues I’m having is the alcoholic and bums with no jobs that like to loiter around and beg for money every time they see you lol
@@thechigirl2498 great that your experience has been different there, however I could recount many in just the short year that I was there . The beauty of life is that two people in the same place can still see and experience it differently. Maybe the fact that I'm a 6'5 Black man with a hulking statute afforded me the not so " friendly" and welcoming vibe that you receive when I would walk the neighborhood with my dog and my normal Southern affinity to greet was met with stares and sometimes people crossing the street. Maybe I just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, when I heard two white guys yell the "N" word from their car to a fellow Afro-American driver in front of my apartment building. Oh well, I guess we both see/saw two different sides of the same place because I mean in the same vain, I didn't encounter the bums with no jobs and alcoholic panhandlers ( well except at Howard Street station) LOL.
@@michaelfitz6850 I’m sorry you had to go through those experiences. I’m not surprised though even though my reply may have given that impression. With all that being said. I am tired of this location and will be relocating lol. Glad you’ve found peace in your current neighborhood ❤️
I moved there in April and I'm right by the beach. It's nice, but the parking availability is absolutely non existent, and I've gotten several parking tickets because of this reason. Also, the old buildings come with mice and no matter how clean you are or how many holes you seal they still manage to get in. There are alao a lot of addicts and transients in Roger's Park as well. I'm definitely moving back to the west suburbs.
@@IndigoCosmic everything you said with the exception of the tickets was my reality to the point that it was frightening. Hopefully your landlord dealt with the mice issue better than mine. I tell ya, I don't miss it up there at all. May your comfort be restored when you return to the West Suburbs.
I live in East Rogers Park. It is the absolute best neighborhood. The parking isn’t horrible and it is the most diverse neighborhood in the city. The lake is at my back door, lots of stuff to do and you can be downtown in 25 minutes.
6:10 Listen, this is a dealbreaker for me. I once moved from Bed-Stuy to a less diverse neighborhood in Brooklyn. It wasn't even about the people but rather the culture. No restaurants where I could get Caribbean food. (Yes, there's DoorDash, Grubhub, etc, but sometimes you just wanna walk into the spot and get your meal!) The library didn't have a diverse selection of authors (vs lots of James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, etc in the one near me in Bed-Stuy). No Black houses of worship in the area (vs the Black church right down the street in Bed-Stuy). Long story short, I moved right back to Bed-Stuy ASAP lol. There was nothing the other neighborhood actively did to make me feel unwelcomed per se, but... everything in Bed-Stuy screamed "I love your Blackness!"
I don’t know if you are still looking but Albany park and Irving park areas are equally as nice but less crowded so more parking! Rent is a little cheaper as well
I lived on the morthside for 28 years, have to get used to the parking situation, but loved every building i rented in! Never had a issue with nieghboors, evetyone stayed to themselves.
Not currently looking for an apt, but I just stumbled upon your video. Chicago native 🙋🏻♀️ grew up in east lakeview, which is the location of the last apartment featured in your video. I actually grew up right down the street from that very pricey 1br on pine grove! I hope you found an apartment that checked all the boxes.
I've been looking for apartments for ages in chicago. My advice is get a job that pays way more then minimum wage of you expect to afford to live alone. Also if you want a nice apartment that's not the size of a shoebox or in a bad area find a trusting roommate because prices are ridiculous. One months rent while on minimum wage even in a studio is more than half of your monthly income
I swear you made this video for me😩🙌🏾 I’m actually trying to move to Chicago in a year && half my budget is about the same for my first apt out there I want something decent && I was definitely looking for places on the north side for sure Logan square, Avondale, Irving park && Lawndale area
Yaaay! I'm glad it was helpful to you! We are in this together! There are some descent spots on the North side I was surprised! Hope you find something you love!
Girl if you was to move down south. You can get a house for those prices. I got a three bedroom house with a huge backyard for $900 a month. $1,200 will get you a huge condo down here. So many people from up top are coming down south now it's crazy.
Just discovered your channel. Keep up with these videos I am also looking to move into Chicago with that budget in mind. Also looking into west loop and south loop
I'm a fan of DIVERSITY myself but I GOTTA see my people in EVERYWHERE I go, North side of Chicago used to be the place for that in some areas it still is
This was really filmed on 2021? I only clicked on thos video because I am literally stunned that rent is so cheap!!! I never looked at rent prices in Chicago before buy I would think that it would be high, just like every other metropolitan area across the country.
I moved to Chicago from DC because the rent is MUCH cheaper and there's so much more to do. I paid $650 for a studio with a massive walk-in closet and all utilities included in 2012 and my rent only increased by $200 and now includes internet.
I grew up on the north side it’s very diverse and I’m African-American unless it’s changed. I actually grew up on Pine Grove. Don’t miss it due to something else critters.! From what I recall, it was very nice, save and close to the lake !
I've lived in Uptown, Hyde Park, Ukrainian Village, and Pilsen. My advice for the parking situation especially in the areas you're looking at is to either get rid of your car or keep it in a different neighborhood. No joke. I know things are different with the CTA during a pandemic, but I'm the before times I had a couple friends who would keep their cars at a friend's garage or parking spot and just use it for driving out of town out to areas CTA didn't cover. Wrigleyville gonna wrigleyville 🤷🏿♀️
I used to live Irving Park and pine Grove nice area. That was when I was young. Now I got my house 80 and keeler. Nice. And quite. I'm old now retire..
I’m looking in the same area for a place to move in November! Same budget too! I’m disappointed to hear it might be lacking in diversity. I was aiming near Buena Park. Visiting in a couple months to scope out the neighborhoods, and this video was really helpful and fun!
Actually, the North side is way more diverse than the south side. South side is mostly black and brown. North side to me is more diverse. Walk into any bar and you’ll see the diversity of the crowds.
The North Side is very diverse. I grew up on the South Side and moved to the North Side as an adult. Lived on the North for over a decade now. It’s actually more diverse than the South Side. I live in a neighborhood and building that has Latinos, Black people, Arab, White and Asian. I think the issue is that if you live in a predominantly black area and move somewhere where there are lots of other types of people it can feel jarring. And it’s also all about WHERE you live on the North Side. Wrigleyville is hella white. But Edgewater, Uptown, Rogers Park? Not so much.
I’ve lived in Lakeview. I couldn’t take it now I’m looking at either hyde park or argyle. Mostly high rises. Just subscribed. I’m from Bronzeville, but parking is shitty up north, periodt. Chicago is the most segregated city, which is good and bad. There are pros and cons to it. Omg! You guys walked past my gym, I think you’re on lakeshore and waveland.
I live on the Northside, I had to sell my car even though we have parking in my building, they want $285 per month to park, ...That's the only thing negative about living on the Northside is no parking
The $1250 one bedroom is the way to go. It is less money per square foot, and it has a pool, plus security. Large living spaces, thick soundproof walls, natural light (meaning windows), gas stoves, hardwood floors, outdoor spaces (like a porch), proximity to stores & restaurants & public transportation, and good heat & air-conditioning, plus Pools & Fireplaces make life good.
Chicago native here, I'm currently apartment hunting right now and I wanted to stay in Hyde Park since im near but I also like up north so Im tied between the two lol And there are black people up north lol they come out at different times and mostly more in away from the beach. For parking, I'd say keep your car in your spot and if you need to go out take an uber or transit which is so easy here. You are not getting that spot back until probably the next day lol they be out there for awhile for cubs games
Thanks for the advice girl! Especially the uber tip! That does make sense to just leave it parked. This is all new to me so I appreciate it. I hope you find an amazing place to live!
I once lived a few blocks from Fenway Park in Boston, home of the Red Sox - and on game days I simply left my car in it's spot and took public transportation. Otherwise I could not have found a legal parking space when I returned. Easy-Peasy solution - and I Never had a Problem. Just hold onto your parking space like gold, and only use your car when absolutely necessary. Also, keep a folding chair in the trunk, so If you need to move your car for street cleaning, and if it's a safe neighborhood, do this late at night, scoping out an empty nearby spot and setting your chair in it for a minute to save it while you move your car. That's what we do in Chinatown, and it works. Unlike Boston, Lincoln Park is pretty much color-blind, so you will be a welcome sight there.
I was in hyde park. I grew up on 55 king king drive. I tried the north side but I'm a family person and like to have gathering so the Northside parking was a no for me. Maybe we will collab one day😜
Don't forget the Suburbs. The prices are a bit lower and you get bang for your buck. Places like Oak Park and Brookfield are nice, affordable, safe and right next to the city.
@@IndigoCosmic As far as OP, I've been here a while. I'm comparing rental prices to comparable areas in the city. It's a bit lower if you are talking a one bedroom and stay away from these new high rises that have gone up in the last 7 years or so. With inflation the prices have gone up, but still. The village also gives you some protection from janky land lords. Most of them are are on the up and up but you get one or two that need to be gathered. Usually newer ones to the area that need a dose of how things are done here. They get gathered real quick.
@@Zipperskull_ Inflation has hit but you can still find good deals. There are pockets close to Austin, Roosevelt and the expressway that tend to be cheaper/avail. One you get to central OP between Ridgeland and Harlem price can get higher. Overall prices range from $975-$1075 for decent studios and one bedrooms. This is excluding the newer high rises. You start talking more closet space or full dining room it goes up $75-$100.
@Sonya Robinson That makes sense if you've lived there a while. Most renters I know who've been there for years haven't gotten high prices but now a 1 bedroom in Oak Park is at least $1100 a month or more. I know because I've been looking for months. I've lived in Oak Park and Forest Park most of my life and OP has always had higher rent prices even in non high rise buildings.
I lived on the northside and the downside is that I didn't find it too safe. If you don't mind rapist and some strange behaviors it may work out. I was glad I found a nice one bedroom apt. Further north on Sheridan road 5700 block. Public transportation is right outside your door and the lake is right across the street. You will see more Black people.
What? I've been living in your area in Edgewater for 10+ years as a young Asian-American. It's been fine for me. I don't go out late in Chicago at night but I'm a homebody.
I am going to Chicago to do my phd during the fall. As an international student, I am completely lost 😅😅😅 I am thinking about looking apartments in Edgewater, lake view and Rogers park
Where did you end up moving? Diversity is an issue. If you moved a little farther north and west of Ashland you could get more for your money and better parking.
Have u found a place yet...look 4 apartments n a condo building...addresses to check...4250 n. Marine...5100 n.marine...5815 n. Sheridan...much nicer buildings which r condos n your price range ok
So this video randomly showed up on my feed. I live in Chicago and am pretty familiar with this area. I worked for an apartment finder service a long time ago and we did a lot of rentals for that guy who showed you the apartments on Pine Grove. (Not so) Fun fact: he was rumored to be a huge racist. So I hope you didn’t try to rent anything from him!
I’m in Orlando, FL and rent not even that cheap here. It used to be when I first moved here but after COVID it jumped significantly. I pay $2300 for a 3 bedroom 😩
Lots of black people on the Northside. It the price that will keep you away. Try Ravenswood, West Rogers Park, Andersonville. There are better prices and parking over there.
Hello so I’m trying to move to Chicago but can’t find any local rental company to contact. Looking for apt in Chicago please lmk if some places I can contact thank you
There's lots of diversity on the north side it's too bad you didn't see anyone of color but then again you were looking at places when most people are at work. I suggest you visit the neighborhoods that are appealing to you on the weekend or evenings to get a better idea of the area. Also where you were looking seems close to the lake and since there is plenty of space, lots of people seem to hangout there. Anyway happy apartment hunting.
I’m so sorry but where are you finding $800-$1200? I live in Irving park and I just got a place for $1250 2 bedroom. But it was a wild card. Right now all 2 beds are going for like 14-18k it’s insane. I had a good place in Lincoln square but the landlord kicked all the tenants out. The market is horrible right now
Yall remind me of me and my wife when we were apartment/ house hunting. I like yall energy, so I have to keep it real with you. 1. Being coupled up in an apartment usually creates babies (idk if yall already have kids, but i feel like yall already subconsciously thinking about it while you're looking for "safe" neighborhoods. Do yourselves a favor and don't move into a studio. 2. Up north ain't for us. There are very few Black people. The few Black people you see will likely be homeless or they will be straight from the movie Get Out. There are few regular Black folks up north, but because everyone is busting their ass to pay high ass rent, your interactions will be limited and socializing will likely not happen. On the off chance that you do socialize with other Black folks, you will catch stares and more (police presence on weekends and after cubs games is ridiculous, and someway, somehow, in a sea of openly drunk white people, they will find a way to fuck with you). And it's unavoidable. There's no recognition or real acceptance of Black culture up north. No matter how many Black lives matter signs you see; no matter how many times they play hip hop and rnb at their bars; no matter how upstanding and brilliant you may be, your Blackness makes them uncomfortable. The only way they can be comfortable with Blackness is if you act like one of the characters from Get Out. For the love of God, don't submit yourselves to that type of treatment in the place that you live, and please don't bring yall current/ future babies up in some shit like that. 3. Unfortunately, there is barely any solid advice I can give you on what you could or should do. Rent is high everywhere 🤷🏿♂️. Idk if yall are in a position to pull this off, but what my wife and I did was buy a house on the north end of the Austin neighborhood (west side). The house was converted into a 2 flat. I moved my sister and niece in downstairs (being an actual landlord takes time and a lot more money, so I'd suggest renting to family or friends). Now we're splitting one mortgage payment of 1860 down the middle. 930 a month gets us a three bedroom with in-house laundry and a huge backyard. If you can pull off a similar two flat arrangement, I can testify that it is a definite steal compared to that bullshit they're trying to sell you up north.
Thank you for your feedback! My friend Rob was only helping me tour and be an extra set of eyes. We are not planning to live together. I should’ve made that clear because we do look like a couple 😅😂
Some demographics should anticipate cold or rude agents, units that were rented out “just before you got here”, and agents telling you how bad the area is (hint hint)…
Did not like those old apts 4 that price..u can find a new building or condo lux building 4 that price...many new building north side..sheridan and wilson...etc.please do not settle 4 less please..contact me l can help
Exactly I can’t believe that mold in the bathroom. I’m glad I don’t live there anymore. No central air or updated units. Come to the southwest where everything is included. Pools etc
I found them on apartments.com - I use the filters for Max budget $1000 and $1100. Then set the minimum bedroom to 1. It took some searching but they have some good ones on there! Hope you find a nice place!
These are considered AFFORDABLE apts. Viewed the one on Kenmore, hall carpeting nasty, unit too Small, too close to neighbors, Smell of Mary Jane in hallway
