person driving a vehicle wanted in an earlier shooting was shot to death by police in the Homan Square neighborhood Monday night, authorities said. A Harrison District officer shot the person in the 3400 block of West Grenshaw Street after trying to stop the vehicle about 7:40 p.m., said Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Eugene Roy, in a statement at the scene a little before 10 p.m.
Officers were patrolling when they saw the vehicle, and tried to stop it, but a person from the vehicle fled on foot, and one officer ran after, Roy said. "They attempted to stop the car, at which time the offender fled from the car, with one officer in pursuit," said Chief of Detectives Eugene Roy, his statement mirroring language of one released moments later by police News Affairs. "A foot pursuit ensued, during the course of that pursuit, it led to an armed confrontation between the offender and the officer, resulting the officer firing shots with his service weapon, striking the offender."
The person was taken to an area hospital, and pronounced dead, Roy said. A weapon was found on scene and was being taken into evidence. No officers were injured, Roy said. Police referred further questions to the Independent Police Review Authority. IPRA was notified about 8 p.m. that a person had been shot by police in the 3400 block of West Grenshaw Street, said Larry Merritt, a spokesman for the board.
IPRA generally does not answer questions about police shootings while it conducts investigations.
The statement from News Affairs noted that "The officer(s) involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days," a procedure initiated last year in all police-involved shootings.
An alley between Roosevelt Road and Grenshaw was blocked with red evidence tape and an evidence marker was on Roosevelt, showing where a gun magazine lay on the ground.
