Hats off this display is a labor of love, as fellow modeler I can appreciate all the time and work that went into this beautiful dio.

beautiful layout - the landscape, backscene and structures are perfect. The locos just show what can be done to 'backdate' a Mantua 'General' and their other rtr stock. Very nice indeed.

I love the old American steam locomotives. I started getting interested in model trains a couple years ago. I purchase the V&T J. W. Bowker by Rivarossi and two Prussia 4-2-0 by Bachmann. I have been looking for a good deal on a General and other 4-4-0 engines. I just started making my first module. I got some of the Airfix soldiers with Cannons. This video is great inspiration. Thanks for sharing this awesome layout.

Marvelous work. I ride the line often today and the terrain and vistas are very well represented here. Who manufactures your locomotives. I was quite impressed by the locomotive coupled mid train with the polling arm instead of a modern kadee stuck in the pilot. I also appreciate the variations on pilot cowcatchers. I had a small layout as a kid foe Ringold to Tunnel Hill and Resaca using a Mantua kit of the General and a custom painted AHM Boker as running stock.

A very nice video and layout. I have a couple of HO scale "American" locomotives (including the famous Western & Atlantic "General"), though I plan on primarily running Pennsylvania railroad engines on my layout.

Outstanding ,constructive observation on an awesome civi lwar era lay out. And I must say you captured the feel. But you need more shotgun riders on the train too cool need more to draw attention to them they really set the mood on the train it self. Great work

Is that a Mantua General? When I got mine in 1959 it would pull maybe four cars mounted on the metal side frames. But a few years ago I put 13 cars on plastic trucks behind it and it walked off with them like a champ

This is just so... beautiful! I've been building a post- "War Between the States" (Civil War) 1870s layout, but I have been considering switching it up, and making it a Civil War "Union" layout... why "Union" when my family were all Confederates? Because the Union had more rail lines, and a LOT more passenger service. Freight makes more money than passenger, and the South allowed the corporations to build their rail lines, and as such, they were made to service freight more than passenger, and had far fewer rail lines... less track, and less places they went... while the Union did a lot of government infrastructure work... meaning more places for passengers, and thus, more rail lines... this became a handicap for the south when the war started. Fewer rail lines, meant fewer places to move troops, and equipment... it also means that even with the Andrews' Raid being a failure in the end (the south got their engine back, but a lot of rail line was crippled in the raid) it still damaged the south's ability to move troops and equipment during the final days of the war. You troops moved by the speed of the slowest horse... that was changed by the railroads... so any damage to the railroads became a hindrance to one's war efforts. (that, plus, a Union Civil War railroad can be dovetailed into an Old West scene eventually)

how long would it have taken to refuel a wood burning locomotive during the war between the states? i understand during the chase the Andrews raiders used some parts of their only remaing box car to keep their engine going until they finally ran out of steam
@fiddler1861
@fiddler1861 2 года назад
The raiders did stop at a couple of woodyards, and spent no more than 10 minutes with a crew chucking up the firewood into the tender. They did finally run out of wood AND water at Ringgold, after being chased by the Texas crew, who only had two guns...versus the handgun armed Federals. it was more about bluster than posturing than actually firepower on W. Fuller's part.

@STho205
@STho205 2 года назад
Crew cars, which would become cabooses later ...at this time we're disused coaches or empty box cars with a hole cut in the roof to access the roof walks, the hand brakes and to observe the train in rough curves for derails. Most way freight strings weren't long enough at this time to need crew cars. Some long runs were though. That detail added here and there is a good model of the mid 19th century.

@@thomradice8680 A wonderful layout at the time of the American Civil War. Probably around the railroad it is 1/87 and in the town and soldiers 1/72 or? I also do that, because the 1/72 figures just look better. But your buildings in the western town are also 1/72? From which manufacturer is the colorful 4-4-0 locomotive?
@thomradice8680
@thomradice8680 Год назад
Most figures are 1/87 and a lot also 1/72. Most structures are scratch built. The kits however in Dalton are DPM, design preservation models.
