The Wyandotte is a stunning chicken breed full of personality. In her first "Breed Observation" video, RSM gives the pros and cons she's noticed with having three Wyandotte chickens over the past few years. If you're looking to start - or expand - your flock, trust that you can always find honest content here. And of course, Lacie the Silver Laced Wyandotte is thrilled to finally get her debut as the star of the show!

I found a young silver laced one chilling in my pool one morning. None of the neighbors were missing any chickens, so we decided to keep her. She's absolutely adorable, sweet, an absolute egg machine, and a lot smarter than I was expecting. Since she's the only chicken (and is a total pet) we have, she gets to stay in a dog crate in the house at night and when the weather is bad. She's spoiled and she knows it.

Oh wow! What an amazing story. Is it a full size in-ground pool?! My Lacie is a fantastic personality too. So glad you found her!
@whitewolf9088
@whitewolf9088 3 года назад
@@realsimplemama Yeah, it's a big ground pool. She was on the steps in the shallow end. It was 5:30 am and still a bit dark, so we aren't sure if she tripped in or what. Our backyard also has a tall fence surrounding it, so she had to have flown over it at some point during the night.

We have a Silver Laced Wyandotte hen; her name is Hawk. She is really sweet, really smart, and very talkative. Last year, my four chickens were in a fence free-ranging when it rained and the tarp on top fell in, so they were all getting rained on. Hawk flew up to our bathroom window and banged and banged on the window with her beak until we came running to see what was wrong. We ran so fast to get them back into their covered run, but I was just amazed that Hawk instantly found a way to let us know they had a problem. I lover her. She gives us three or four eggs a week.

I'm in Colorado with drought and a higher heat index over the last few years. My small coop is outside, surrounded by chain link( top and bottom) because if coyotes, bears, hawks mountain lions. I have found that the heavy duty gold tarp from tractor supply, over the top of my 12X12 foot coop , keeps it cooler in summer and warmer in winter. We have already had 100 degree Temps. The only breed I have lost to heat ( i think) was an Orpington. The last few years I have had a mix of Wyandotte, Rhode Island Red and Orpington. So far, so good with the hens.
@realsimplemama
@realsimplemama 2 года назад
Sounds good! If you can, make sure that the perimeter fence is buried under the ground or that you put something like bricks around the outside edge to keep predators from digging under. I’d also recommend using hardware cloth if possible, maybe you can add it gradually over time. I’m so glad the tarp is helping with the hotter summers! ✌🏼❤️🐓

Actually all of my hens do an egg song. It’s not the same as a crow and it could be a good lesson to teach your neighbors! But I don’t think that egg songs are specific to breed, I bet most laying hens do it!

Just adding that once I started deworming with a slight amount if diamataceous earth about once a week, the stools on the backsides are not as loose, just right. Dont overdose the birds, or the yolks will be black. I just offer about 2 tablespoons in with mealworns for my 7 hens, once a week. I just allow them to pick what they want for about an hour andcthen I pick the bowl up and remove it. Its working well.

Not all chickens are supposed to weigh the same. Every breed has different weight requirements. Wyandottes are a heavy breed. It's perfectly normal for her to be heavier then your other birds. I'm not sure what all breeds you have. Also, you can't gauge body condition or weight by look, you have to pick them up and assess their body condition score (research how to assess this) and actually weigh them in a scale, their plumage can be very deceiving and your bird that "looks" the heaviest can easily be you lightest bird in actuality.
@nayster0814
@nayster0814 4 года назад
They are a great dual purpose bird, which is why they are heavier and great mommas. Also they are better for colder climates and will lay during winter where most breeds will stop. Mine took in all the new young chickens as her own.
