Great question. The reasons I didn't put it up higher were I was hoping the round shape of the barrel would help the frame to slide forward easier by putting it in contact with the ground and also I was concerned about whether that light weight plywood would support having the barrel up higher, even with supports which would add some weight to the overall frame.
Any difficulties catching any of the chickens in the coop? I'm guessing you are crawling around in the run area, and more particularly if they run and hide in the barrel?
Are the hens okay laying eggs in the same spot they sleep with the rooster and other hens? I for some reason have always thought they need a separate private area
