OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY: This chicken coop was $50 and took only 1 hour to build. This is the most viewed chicken coop video on youtube. Thanks for watching and share it with your friends. This is a great coop for meat birds, turkeys or what ever type of bird or any animal you need housed.
This build is so easy even someone with zero skills could pull it off =)
we suggest having one on your homestead for a standby

I built this and it worked for about 2 months. The corners in the front pulled apart. I would use some metal corner braces or prebend the cattle panel so there isn't so much outward pressure. It's a good, cheap design otherwise.

You'll never need to worry about cutting the wrong size, spin in circles or waste time trying to figure out what goes where... With ryan's detailed shed plans ru-vid.comUgkxT9ExVpR-3A-9rpRqx8vzXKZ3BMMTg_KH , it makes building sheds a breeze - just like putting lego bricks together! You'll be able to create the kind of shed, your neighbors and other woodworkers will secretly envy (while mumbling nice job under their breath).

Doug, you had mentioned in one of your videos about building a $50.00 chicken coop. I found it!!! This would make a great second coop for many reasons! First, I need to build a permanent coop for the chickens I am going to get this year. I can't wait! I have never had chickens before, or a homestead before. What an incredible blessing, and I am doubly blessed to have found you and Stacy to guide me through the thousands of things that make up a homestead. Thank you both so much! God Bless!

I built this and put plywood in the front corners on each side, one for the water, one for the food. Put a rack in the back for them to sleep on and put three milk crates in the back with small holes in the chicken wire for my wife to get the eggs. Put some old lawn mower wheels that are adjustable in each corner. And we roll it around the chickens love it and actually eat a lot of grass and bugs and very little feed.

Great idea! Over many years several farm buildings have fallen (before we bought the farm) and we have parted up the old ruins and reused the lumber for several animal shelters. I think the best ideas come from what is on hand! This is a great example.

Best one I’ve seen. Suggestion to prevent tarp ripping. When attaching it, instead of screwing it down, place a baton strip along the whole side edge and nail the baton in place.

Handy set up. We would have to use hardware cloth for the fencing though. It's the only stuff small enough to keep weasels from getting the chicks. They get through the smaller size chicken wire. I assume wiry little weasels with an appetite for noisy chicks aren't a problem in your area, unlike here in upstate NY. Of course they can't get the bodies out, so they kill, drag the bodies to one pile and leave them. That's their modus operandi.

This was one of my first D&S videos I watched a couple of years or so ago. Was very nice seeing it and the other first few videos again! I hope by now the coop door is easier to get into though. Twisting 3 wires just to open or lock the door would be very tedious and frustrating. Besides that, I love the portable coop idea and would definitely want to own one or two myself if I ever buy enough land where I could raise chickens. Thanks Doug and Stacey!!

I like it! One thing I would do differently, is to make it easier to open and close the "door" securely. I have found when using utility fencing this way, that a few large-headed nails placed strategically works to hold the panel edge in place, when you have to pull it hard to stretch it to hook over the heads. So, it's open in an instant, and closes just as quickly.

We found that by adding a 2x4 on top of the tarp edge and wrapping the tarp edge around the 2x4 before nailing it into place, prevents the wind from tearing the tarp and keeps it nice and tight for shelter in the worst of storms.

idea for the chicken coop door. Leave the hog panel spokes long and drill holes in the board to match up and then just line up the wire to the holes and drop the panel in the holes

loved this video, simple and economical. Not all things need to look like it came from Martha Stewart!

Stacey Vega Markum lat on commenting, we built our hen house almost entirely out of scrap lumber. Once it was complete it looked kind of sad, but the following year we did an extension and then I painted it. Looks pretty good, but mainly it is completely secure from varmints!

Very practical. Nice job! Seems like the same design could scale to whatever size you feel that one person could drag. Thank you!

Double end dog snaps could be used with eyelet screws for the door, just an easier way for the missus.
