This is probably taking way longer than it should but thats mostly due to me stumbling around in the dark trying to figure out what im doing on the fly.
My brothers and I were lucky. Our dad was a farmer, mechanic, plumber, carpenter, electrician, cement finisher, welder and truck driver. His life ambition was to learn all he could to pass it on to his kids. Him and his dad had a horrible relationship. He left home after graduation in 53 and joined the Army engineers, took every course they taught. We in turn, learned all we could from him. RIP Dad.
I'm glad that you have your dad to fall back on to help you with things. That's what parents do they help their children? And you're not. You're a smart cookie yourself. It's just things that you have never done that. Throw you for loop which is fine. With everybody has that kind of a problem, but I'm glad to see that you're doing this. We're not helping a little bit but more or less. You're gonna blow yourself. It's kee p it up, keep up the good work.
I'm 63 and my dad is 84. I still ask for and value the help and advice he is able to give. Value the time you have with him. At this age, the reality that he may not be around much longer is really hitting home.
You suck every bit of knowledge you can from your dad. Nothing can replace age and wisdom. My father is 87 years old and is still teaching me electrical, carpentry, and just how to be a father to my son. Just this weekend I began working with my son on renovating his home. I used so much of what I learned from my dad to begin passing to my son. This is the natural order of things. We learn and we pass it on. I can't imagine growing up without the relationship I had with my dad. Like you, I really feel sorry for those that don't have that. They missed out on so much. I love the relationship you show with your dad on this channel. In a way, we are learning from his knowledge also. Keep the videos coming Ethan.

Enjoy all the time u get with your dad and soak up as much from him as u can. Who cares what the internet saids. I lost my dad when I was in my 20's and I'm 43 now I wish I could of got to do stuff with him like u two do. Most of what I know I had to learn on my own. Let him help and soak up everything u can from him
I've raised chickens in Maine for almost 20 years, wind is the enemy of a chicken in winter. If they have decent structure and nesting boxes to get out of the wind they'll be fine.

Nice work. Don’t worry about the haters, you’re lucky to have someone like your dad to help guide you. I was taught everything I know today by him and my uncle. We didn’t always get along but at end of the day it was all good.
I have been building a 12 x 12 cabin using all rough saw mill wood on our property since I retired and I am not a carpenter but I do have pretty good common sense and I watched them build my house. I am about done but when I got around to the board and batten siding needed a little help. Neighbor built houses for years so I got him to take a look. He said "you built this by yourself" ? I said yes and he told me I had done a damn fine job to not have any experience. I am a boomer and as such I was taught to figure it out yourself and use some common sense which there isn't much left now days especially in the younger generations. I am not too proud to ask for help if I need it. Can't ask my father cause he died 22 years ago. Figured it out early it ain't rocket science. You will do a good job and the more you do the more you will learn how to do.
When "I am just going to replace the roof" turns into "Screw it, we're re-engineering it!". I am sure you will be much happier once it is all said and done and should mean less future repairs. And anyone saying you are fake for asking for help from people who know more needs their head examined. Humans have gotten as far as we haave because we pass skills and knowledge down from generation to generation.
Wish me and my old man got along half as good as you and your dad do. Had alot of mentors, my uncles and grandpa and now some of the older guys I consider good friends were more like dads than he ever was. In short don't let the internet tell you otherwise its good to have him around. Your doing just fine on the building. Also when it comes to building at a certain point close enough is close enough if your eye don't catch it let it be. Abit of helpful advise there.
I learned almost everything I know from my dad, unfortunately we lost him 12 years ago, there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t wish for his input!!
You are so correct about Harbor Freight Chinese products, at least they are priced like the junk they are... for the most part. Worst part is we just won't make our own stuff.
Dad's advice is always a good thing....thats how we all learn so don't listen to the keyboard warriors...thise of us who grew up farming and still are self reliant it's imperative to have dad...im 52.years old and still ask dad's input when I'm working on certain things, it's about experience and perspectives man...at least youre.doing it.unlike.many who criticize having never done this type of work...good job
I learned farming from my dad & also tought me 2 drive a semi . My grandfather done construction & I learned from him on that aspect. I gusse what I'm saying if your lucky enough to have someone around with that type of experience y not learn as much as u can!
A 1/4 inch difference isn't too bad at all...send er...lol...there are a lot of new construction builds a lot worse than 1/4 inch no doubt...lol...good work pal!
I would use styrafoam insolation. Mice don't like it but it fills the voids and its cheap. Don't worry so much about strait studs, the chickens won't care.😂
This is as much a question for others as Ethan. But is "shim shingle" a regional term? I have never heard shims referred to as that? I'm an amateur hack too but did work as a carpenter helper when I was a kid and we used packs and packs of shims hanging doors building stairs and installing cabinets. Also remember when that building was built they were hand sawing everything...it was a small barn or something for pigs or whatever. Close was good enough. Quick measure and saw...if you mis measured they weren't cutting another wasting material and the effort to say again.

Ethan, screw the idiots that give you a hard time about asking your dad for help. There is a lot to learn in life, and if he is a good resource then why not. Life is short, so bonus, you get to spend time with him too. I hope my boys and I get along as good as you and your dad when they are older. And don't stress over perfection, the chickens won't care 😂
I agree learn as much as you can. I wish I could have and would have listened to my dad more. He passed in 2009 he was 60 and I was 22 there was a lot more to learn from him. Spend the time you can with your parents there isn't a day goes by I don't think of my dad
Ethan I'm just kind of curious I understand that you want to keep the integrity with using nails but you can also get really good integrity with screws and it makes it a lot quicker just a suggestion to your chicken coop and you want to do what you want to do that's completely fine I'm not trying to be a hater just wondering

Ethan, I would definitely say take advantage of the knowledge that your dad has to share with you. I'm thinking's the people who complaining that you don't know how to do things are probably the same people when they need surgery they take care of it themselves and not seek a doctor. Thanks Michael
