Chicken Dhansak is a delicious, mildly spiced curry with lentils.
There is a bit of a debate in the UK about how a chicken dhansak should be cooked.
Some insist that it have pineapple chunks in it. Others, of which I am one, prefer to leave the pineapple out.
At home we prefer to call this a simple Chicken and Chana Dhal Curry rather a Chicken Dhansak but either way, it's combination of chicken with dhal, making this one wonderful homemade dish.
I hope you enjoy my recipes, for those that are interested in the items I use in my kitchen, take a look at some of them on my Amazon Store, which can be found at the following link:

See how I make my Chicken Dhansak.
Ingredients:
500g chicken breast fillet cubed
1/3 cup of oil
1/3 (80g) cup of chana dhal ( split yellow grams) pre soak for 4 hours
1 large onion finely sliced
2 medium tomatoes roughly chopped
1 teaspoon of:
salt
coriander powder
deghi mirch kashmeri chilli powder
cumin seeds

'Dhansak' is a traditional Parsi dish and was brought to the Indian subcontinent by migrating Parsis from Persia. As a child back in the 50s and 60s, I remember a lot of Parsis lived in Pakistan and my parents had many Parsi friends like Brigadier Golwala, Jimmy Irani, Colonel Supariwala, etc. (yes, my dad was in the army too). 'Dhansak' was a favorite and often requested by my parents at parties and gatherings. The typical Punjabi 'Chana dal chicken' differs vastly from the original Persian version.

That’s absolutely correct. Noway restaurants make it authentic as it’s a labour of love and some time. Similar to haleem in that though not as laborious. I learnt in the past that it must contain some veggies, that sak means veg.. Pakistani channa dhal with chicken or meat is most likely descent from dhansak. My family has always made it with lamb or chicken and it’s undoubtedly a Punjabi fave. I have often made it with the 1 or 2 of other yellow Dhals in but never dhansak .. it’s on my make list for 30 years but life got in the way. Parsi cuisine is fascinating too with the history of its people in Persia.

Cooked this today. Absolutely lovely. I added a spoonful of sugar because I like my dhansak a bit sweeter, but other than that I followed the video and the dish was a big hit with my family. Thanks!

My fave curry, I always thought this had sugar in it or something for sweetness? Do you make the naan too? Is there a video?
@MyLittleKitchenRecipes
@MyLittleKitchenRecipes 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for your comment. Restaurant and takeaways may have sugar in them but we've never really added any sugar in any curries if I'm honest. You can add if you wish. Regarding the naans, yes have a few versions of naan bread on my channel, just search for my little kitchen naan in the search bar and it should direct you there.

Hi Shamsa, another winner . My wife prefers Lamb Dhansak, could I just replace the chicken with the lamb or would the method of cooking this dish be different? Thanks for all your recipes, your the tops.(Still waiting for the book though).

Yes you can but cooking times will differ, I'll be doing a video on lamb dhansak in the future.

Hi Rob, the Karahi that I used to cook this in was bought from my local Morrisons supermarket. Some store may have them, some not as it depends which areas they're in. If its a highly populated Asian area, they may have them. Take a look.

In all my years I’ve never heard or seen a dhansak with pineapple! And why use cups as a measurement if you’re based in the U.K.? No one knows what a cup is apart from Americans haha

Hi there, oh no! 😬 get well soon 🙌 No, red split lentils cook really quickly and don't require pre soaking. Tinned toms work perfectly too. Enjoy 😊

@@MyLittleKitchenRecipes Thanks for getting back, but I wanted to cook it that day, so soaked them anyway! Came out great, twas for my wife & son who both said it was superb and is now how they want a Dhansak doing all the time. Result…thanks for all your tips and recipes 👏👏

I’m Parsi. You’ve just single handily destroyed our most famous dish and made something that most people wouldn’t eat. Let me educate you, channa daal with meat is an Iranian dish which is eaten in Pakistan - it’s not a Pakistani dish and to call is “Dhansak” is embarrassing! If you want to mislabel it then add pineapple and cream 😂😂😂😂
@FreeToRelax
@FreeToRelax Год назад
I'm parsi and water from the tap is also an Iranian dish. These people making videos and making up stories about our foods 😂😂😂😂😂
