Oh my goodness! Thank you so very much! I was mulling this mystery over in my head for a good hour. I figured out thanks to this video which one was laying the brown eggs. At first we thought it was our blue splash silkie changing her egg colors because they were so small. It didn't dawn on me until now. We were just talking about our barred rocks laying any day now and come to find out they've been laying for over two good weeks. It was a mystery why we were suddenly getting small brown eggs since we have two younger Rhode island reds, two silkies, and two Amerucanas besides the barred rocks.
My black Australorps just started laying 10 days ago. I knew that when chickens first start laying, they're considered "practice" eggs and can be weird in many ways. However, I didn't realize they could be so small. I LAUGHED when they finally laid their first eggs and they were maybe 50% the size of store eggs. I have 8 and I'm not even sure all are laying, but today I got 5. Two of the eggs I got today are maybe 85% the size of store bought eggs. A few have laid eggs with very thick shells, thicker than the store bought ones. I'm not sure if that means anything.
THANK YOU for clarifying this!! I only have 2 chickens, 6mo old. My gey girl has been laying into her 3rd wk now. I've watched other Utube channels stating eggs will be small for 3days, but you say they'll get bigger after a few wks/ months. I'm relieved
The Americana, Astrolorpes, Easter Eggers, all had large light blue and light green eggs, The polish hens had beige eggs. Out of the chickens that I was raising over a year ago, some day I will raise some chickens again. The light blue and light green eggs were as large as the large white ones at the grocery store and eventually the beige eggs also.
I have read that very large or small eggs are not best for hatching. I would wait at least a month or two till they are closer to normal size. My Austrlorps lay a large/x-large egg usually. If you incubate mid/end of August, you should still have time for the chicks to grow and feather plenty before winter
So in other words,,,,,,,my girls started laying at 5 mo.s rumor has it they start at around 6 mos,,,and somewhere i read,,,that they are mature at 10 mos,,,, so makes sence the difference in the size,,,,,So age matters
My chicken lays normal eggs and then today I seen a big eggy my chicken pushed very hard she looked like she was a little chunky but she lauded the egg
