I want everyone to feel good and not judged when they watch my channel! I'm happy to hear opposing views presented in a respectful manner. 🐔❤Let's remember to be kind to each other!
We grew up putting used oil on horse hooves but times have changed. Had to treat some ex battery hens, used a paintbrush to apply melted coconut oil at roost time. They keep it on undisturbed overnight and with the drippings coat the roost
I know you didn’t mean any judgment towards anyone. But we have safer alternatives that, yes, take longer but still effective. Glad you brought this up! ❤️
Thank you so much for having the courage to touch on this subject. It's frustrating when old traditions, wives tells, and ignorance cause animals to suffer. My neighbor would feed his chickens pure corn, because it is what he was taught. I can't imagine putting something so toxic, stinky, and flammable on my babies; I'm worried enough about fire.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia This is very true. You do a very good job at non-judgemental education. I did my best to gently teach my neighbor, but machismo and traditon won out. I'm at a new place where I was able to convince the nice lasy to get her chickens off of pure scratch, onto layer feed and oyser shells. I was amazed when she listened. I have to make an effort not to be a chicken Karen, cause I'm too passionate about them, lol.
@@LeslieWagner-wj7jz you should care about your animals because they’re not just chickens they’re animals and encourage it with people you come across. You’re doing God‘s work. 🙏🏼
Exactly, and these types of psuedo science notions prevail among experts as well...even vets suggest outdated nonsense because they were taught it in school by outdated teachings.
I cannot believe ppl use motor oil and/or gas in their chickens!!!! Who would EVER think these are good ideas?!?!?!?!?!?! Vaseline and veggie oil are not expensive and most ppl have them at home (i don't have veggie oil bc i don't use it or fry foods but i would buy it if i had scaly leg mites!) And i worry about anything i put on my chickens that could end up in their mouths (or the other chickens from checking out something foreign. They act like toddlers sometimes!) Thank you for another educational, informative video!
A and D cream works for my little chicken flock. Wonderful information. I would never think of using harsh chemicals on my girls. Yes coconut oil works too, done it. Love U Queen of Chickenlandia !
And I was concered about using Canola oil lol. I didn't know about the greater evil, now I'll take Canola anyday. I probably will opt for coconut oil though. Chickens LOVE coconut oil when its hardened, it's like candy. Very good examples of how just because it works doesn't mean it's best. Just like washing your hands with ash, although much less extreme. ❤ For the love of chickens. P.S I love the song you sang to Bubbalicous ❤
Hello Madam President Thank you for sharing this. It’s not always easy to face some traditions and share what may be bad about it. When caring for our chickens, we don’t put anything on them that we don’t want in our eggs. (Or meat if we raised birds to harvest) We don’t spray the yard or garden with toxins. We aren’t coating the chickens in them either. I understand all the reasons - cost, it’s what -insert ancient relatives name here- used to do for this or that. When we know better, we do better. As always Choose kindness. Always. Thank you Dalia for the information you share and the kindness you show. Blessings ❤ ~Linda 🫶🏻 👽 🛸 🐓💛
Totally off topic but you look marvelous! You look absolutely gorgeous today, pink is such a great color for you. Your whole style in today’s video is so flattering. Just wanted you to know. 😊 Yes, everything in your video was so valuable and I’m glad you shared that info with everyone.
I was given 4 full-grown Rhode Islands, and later 3 Buff Orps by someone who couldn’t keep them. I had a coop, and a run, and the chickens were okay until I put the Rhodes and Buffs together.😮 I had never had chickens before, and frankly, they were kinda scary! I had to find a place to keep them separated. It was stressful! The sweet Buffs would fight the Rhodes through the mesh every day! I now only have one Rhode Island left. I loved all my chickens, but this one is special. She’s 6 years old; and I love her and spoil her. So does my husband. She follows us around like a puppy. She showed my cat who’s boss as well! 😂 They both hang out with us when we work outside. This year we’ve got a bigger coop and we’re in the process of building a run. I think keeping things clean is key. Anything I would use on myself safely, is how I treated my chickens. Hopefully we get everything done before “Chicken-chicken” leaves us. I want her to enjoy the rest of her chicken life. Once she does leave, I will start over with chicks, at my own pace. ❤
I would use baby oil (the mineral oil kind), lard or tallow (even rendered down chicken fat) long before I used motor oil, especially USED motor oil. Coconut oil or olive oil seems best to me, may be a few other monounsaturated oils that would be okay, I avoid polyUNsaturated fats because of their long term toxicity due to being easily oxidized and the body being unable to process the oxidized oil and storing it instead in the cellular membranes. It takes a lot (many months to years) of weekly periods (36 hour+) times of fasting and a clean diet to clear up the oxidized polyunsaturated oils from your cell membranes and thus clear up the metabolic syndrome it causes. So if I will not use it on me, I will not use it on my chickens, not even if I have to cook them to survive. Now the only "medicine" that would work versus syphilis before antibiotics were mercury salts.... The issue was that people would not change their lifestyle and would neeed the "cure" many times, after a decade or two they would die of mercury poisoning.
I bought several birds with scaly leg mites. I had good luck with a basic wash, rub on a tincture of vegetable oil and a few drops of lavender oil, last layer of vaseline. I appreciate you sharing your personal experience with antibiotics which I also had a bad issue. Sorry to hear that happened to you.
I want to let you know that any time I see this method advocated in chicken groups I STRONGLY discourage it and advocate for your vege oil or Vaseline method. I don’t think you’re being judgmental, I feel you are trying to advocate for the birds. I can’t imagine how uncomfortable gasoline must be for the poor bird who’s already uncomfortable! If I got covered in bug bites, I wouldn’t want something aggravating to treat it! I feel you are trying to protect them and I love you for that!! 6:28
I was 27 when taking an antibiotic that caused me arthritis like pain and permanent joint issues. I'm now 67, and some days it's very difficult to work my gardens and tend to my little flock. These things give me pleasure, so I have reason to keep moving.
Your effort in not being judgey towards those doing their best is admirable. I wouldn’t use those products but like you said, some might only have those available. Thanks for educating with concern for the birds and without judgement 😊
Great advice, Dahlia. Could you also explore the dangers of using a big tyre for a chicken dusting bath area … I’ve heard tyres leach bad stuff into the soil.
I won’t don’t wouldn’t eat chicken since I started watching you and got my first 4 Easter Egger chickens. This is their second summer with me. I look at it as I’m saving their lives, and keeping them out of the hen houses that breed them for sale. This past year with them has been a joy and I have found it very rewarding to give their eggs away every Sunday at church. We live in Louisiana and my niece says I spoil my chickens too much. They have a shop fan that I run on hot days, they have their own swimming pool, and their own Omlet coop with the extended run. I don’t think their spoiled 😊
Always love watching! You lift my spirit sometimes I delay watching your new videos, until I’m in a poor mood 😂 Because I always feel better after visiting “Chickenlandia”
lead paint was a good idea at one time. Not being mean, but honestly people who want to do the wrong thing are going to be offended. You can’t worry about speaking out against it. I would feel worse if I didn’t speak up about something harmful. but thank you Dahlia for always trying to find the middle ground and giving chickens and us the best life.
Ditto this woman is a joy to watch she’s informative. She makes me laugh when she laughs. I laugh so it’s good on you that you see that and people don’t understand that they can just buck up. You didn’t have to explain yourself all the time is what it is thank you for responding to her. That was very kind.
One of our first chickens was named "Original Recipe". We never used liquid veg oil for mites. We have used petroleum jelly when we couldn't get to the store for mite cream or spray. Bag balm is a great alternative idea. I would never even consider using motor oil or gasoline on a chicken. Besides what if the chicken lights a cigarette and bursts into flames. 🔥🧯
If I wouldn't use it on myself or any other human being I sure wouldn't use it on my chickens. Edit: love your hat but forgot to ask who makes them & possibly where a Texas resident could get one ?
i just wanna say.. you seem like such a genuine and caring person and i wanted to take the time to let you know that i see that ( not that my opinion matters) . ive been a sub of yours for many years and i dont comment very often at all. thank you for all the information. you have helped me with my chickens, inspired me in various ways. we appreciate the part of you that you share with us and your content in my house.
Thank you for sharing this valuable information with some of us new chicken parents . Do these nasty mites attack our chickens during a particular time of year ? Gosh something else to fight off our little cuties ❤
My concern would be chemical burns from gasoline. My ex is a mechanic, and he was regularly covered in motor oil, use, and fresh. Unless you have skin issues already, motor oil shouldn't cause a problem. I've never dealt with this with my chickens, so I don't know how long it has to stay on the skin. But, after rescuing a kitten who had 90% chemical burns on her body from gasoline and having had chemical burns myself from gasoline that I didn't wash off right away I personally wouldn't use gasoline unless it can be washed off right after dipping the legs. I hope I never have this issue. Just the look of it makes me think it has got to drive the chickens crazy.
Ty ms President Of chickenlandia. Oh no, I never heard that ppl put gasoline on chickens. That’s not good. Thanks for getting the word out. We know you really care for our chickens.
hi. My chicken (and rooster) are free ranging. I have a extra small house, with 6 chicks that are now 7 weeks. They also are ranging freely, and mix somewhat randomly with the adult flock. But today the rooster violently attacked one of the chicks. I think it is the only cockerel of the 6 chicks, but I dont know. The adult birds have food in their house always, but it seams that the rooster is very hungry and very protective around food, when I feed them (mostly for fun, since both the adult birds and the chicks have food available always in the house.) It appears that the rooster is agitated in the evening, about feeding time. I separated the rooster from the chick, and chased him away, two times. But I suppose there is nothing to do, they will not work out a pecking-order? The rooster is a well built New Hampshire .. the chicks are mixed of layers, not so big as the N.H ... what is there do to? In a few weeks I will introduce 10 new chicks ... and I want all of them to be free rangers. Some of them will be for meat, and some will move in eventually with the layers. Any suggestions?
Thankfully I haven't had any of that so far with any of my chickens. I lost all of my small flock last year and I'm tryin to start again but things don't always work out the way that we want it to without a lot of work and preparing for the adventure. Enjoyed your videos that I've seen so far.
Vaseline is petroleum jelly (gas/oil). I do use Vaseline on my chickens for leg mites. It has to be applied very thick. I also use Ivermectin topically for parasites (Ivermectin doesn’t work for tapeworms or for leg mites). You need Fenbendazole (safeguard or Panacur) for tapeworms. I’ve used vegetable oils for leg mites. It’s sooo messy! I’m completely covered with veggie oil.
Our weather has been nasty and one of our hens has developed dry fowl pox... The things people say we could use. It is horrific! We are using homeopathy, gentian violet and essential oils. I always tell these people that I would not use something with my chikis that I would not use on myself.
@@Growstuff70 I am using thyme and oregano in the waterer, as well as Pranarom Natural Defenses. We are also applying tea tree and thyme alternately on her wattle pimple, as well as gentian violet. We are giving her Schuessler Cell salts and Thuja. Seems to be accelerating the process. Her only symptom is that pimple with a scab on her left wattle and a little one on her comb.
I add certain things to my bird bath, to prevent potential problems. But I was upset that someone would actually do something so cruel, especially when you know it’s unhealthy. I don’t want my chickens to be sick with health issues because of poison. You need to think of future issues and not just in the moment.
I’m so glad I came across your page!! We just bought our first batch of chicks a couple days ago, and so far so good! Thanks you your AWESOME, CLEAR instructed videos! ❤❤❤
Thank you for all your invaluable information you give. I truly appreciate it. ❤ I’ve been a chicken mama for over 6 years now and your knowledge has been well received here. Thank you so much.
My birds have a scaly leg mite problem, and someone told me to put gasoline on their legs to get rid of it. That sounded like a terrible idea to me, theres just so many things that could go wrong.
It’s sad maybe but it doesn’t surprise me. When I was six (back in the 80s) I contracted lice from a girl at school. Well, half the class did, not just me. When the medicated shampoo didn’t work fast enough my father, in his infinite wisdom (may he RIP), decided to go to the local gas station and get KEROSENE to put on my hair. My parents let it sit there for a good long while too. It wasn’t until some more medicated shampoo, a whole lot of vinegar rinsing, fine combing and plucking, and eventually a shearing of my long brown locks the beasties were thwarted. A ridiculously silly anecdote now, but not the smartest decision ever. So….Please don’t put any flammables on your chickens or any other living creatures. It doesn’t work.
I’m just glad neither of my parents decided to light a cigarette while there was kerosene on my head. 😅😅😮 Oh the 80’s when times were sillier….oh…um…simpler. 😂
Love your tips, and ideas, they have been helpful to me in keeping my flock happy and healthy! I never heard of using motor oil or gas to treat this issue. OMG! I would never do that to my pretty girls! Love your sanctuary for your flock, it's lovely! 🤠💖
I will use Vaseline (petroleum) as a last ditch remedy. I will use cod liver oil, castor oil, and different vegetable oils. Heard of folks using lard or hardened vegetable oil like "Crisco". I try to avoid petroleum-based oils. That is why I use Vaseline as a last chance treatment.
I had a horse with an allergy to insect bites, my Veterinarian, at the time told me to wipe him down with burnt motor oil! That’s so gross! But he said the horse would be better off than using steroids all summer every summer! It did work but was only practical when he would be in pasture as the insect that he had the allergy to don’t like to be inside a stall with the horse due to the smells (selective bugs?).
What would cause my once fertile rooster to be shooting blanks?? 3 batches of eggs in the incubator and none hatched... broke open a couple of new eggs and they weren't fertilized....help!
Oh my goodness we just got a four new chickens three of them are Brahma and the other one is a bantam. They are all like one week old. We currently have one full grown, Rhode Island, red, one black laced wine dot and one buff Orpington. Is that little baby bantam gonna be OK with our girls? Please please please respond to me someone. Thank you in advance.❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️🙏
You got to laugh, Dahlia, at the attempts to be funny. I agree with your approach. If the motor oil works, it just goes to show how poisonous motor oil is. We are warned to wear rubber gloves when doing oil changes. There was a time not so long ago, where preem oil was praised for being the answer to parasites, animal or vegetable. If you use gasoline ( petrol), the fumes can be inhaled and cause inflammation of the chicken airways and even cause an environment for bronchitis and pneumonia for your chickens.
If is sever I wash it adding wine cider and backing soda to the water, after drying well I put the cheapest vegetable oil. I never use Vaseline because it's not natural anymore ( originally was made from animals fat, now it's made from petrol).
I would think everyone has Vaseline. Here in Hurricane country, old timers put vaseline on corks to start fire in small wood stoves to cook up cans of soup to eat. Question off topic … what kind of shade screen do you have on your chicken run? I need one but there so many out there it’s confusing.
It’s the petroleum base. The same reason electricians use electrical tape to close a cut. The base is tar. I have used the tape on myself, but I would never use it on my girls or any other pet unless it was a dire emergency.
Yes a+D or Vaseline mineral oil -or cooking oil olive or corn but neither of those last two are very inexpensive Used motor oil or new kills mange on a dog n cat is it absorption dangerously for a chickens .
You have good information. I do see some dual purpose chickens in your flock. It's ok to eat the chickens in your flock. I treat my chickens very well and care for them. When I process them I thank them for their sacrifice and I thank God for this sustenance. It's not an easy task to take a life. But I raise them to eat. I do have egg hens too. People need to remember that hens only give eggs for about three years. It's not practical to keep a chicken if it's not producing eggs. Every animal on a homestead has a purpose and has to earn it's keep. When an old hen stops laying eggs, she will have tuff meat, but will have the best broth and grind up into great dog food. I do raise chickens for meat and process them young so their meat is tender. It's all about being self sufficient. Like all of the fruit trees that i have planted over the years and the vegetables and herbs that I grow.
I absolutely am not against that! I think what you are doing is wonderful. Like I said, I’m not a vegetarian. When I need meat I try to purchase from a farm or humanely raised from the grocery store (not everyone can afford that, though, and that’s okay). I just don’t eat any chickens in my flock.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia I understand. I want to encourage people to grow their own meat. Even if it is only chicken. Personally I started butchering my own chickens because I couldn't afford the chicken from a farm or the Good stuff at the grocery store. There are ways to feed chickens without buying the expensive organic feed from the feed store. It does take some work. But it's well worth it. Years ago when my husband was out of work and our boys would want a snack they would eat a dozen eggs a day. I worked my but off with a full time job and a part time job. But you have to feed teenage boys. So letting broody hens grow more chics is good. We where able to feed our family with good protein, fruits and vegetables off of the one and a third acres homestead we live on. These are skills that people will benefit from, especially in the times we live in right now. So I encourage people to learn these skills.
@@Carolynfoodforest355 oh my goodness I’ve got one teen and I feel like he’s gonna eat us out of house and home! I don’t even know where he puts it lol.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia yeah, try feeding two teenage boys and their friends. I feel blessed that I was able to subliment our grocery bill with the meat, eggs fruits and vegetables that we grew. God definitely provided.
I bought some spray on amazon and she had a cut too but she passed away :( maybe it was another issue then. However, I get inspired by your videos, thanks
When a rooster stops in front of you, puts his head down and starts picking up and tossing sticks a small stones, does that mean he’s about to attack you? I have two roosters for 26 hens, and was hoping to keep both. But, Rocky is starting to look like an aggressive rooster and chases Red out of the coop at night before I close the door, and when they ar3 in the coop in the morning.
Vaseline is basically motor oil. The idea is to use grease to suffocate mites and it can be achieved with other types of oils, preferably edible. And if we add something antiparasitic to it, like neem oil, neem powder, diatomaceous earth we have a double and safe effect.
Vaseline comes from petroleum, but it isn't motor oil at all. Vaseline has been used safely for years and years as a skin barrier. I wouldn't be worried about using it. 😊
Two minutes into the video and I have to say this already Vicks vapor rub is the easiest way. You just have to catch your chicken and lather their leg up. And extremely bad cases it will take two applications, but yeah sure enough it will literally fall right off and the chickens will look like they have brand new legs. Found this out recently.. and I’m not sure what type of person that cares for animals would apply oil or gasoline on any of their animals and think that they’re caring for their animals 🤦🏻♂️ . I’m not a mean person, but I am a blunt person. I tell it like it is people must be some type of stupid to do such a thing. What happened to common sense you know back when we didn’t used to have to have a warning sign on a lawnmower deck that says don’t stick your hand in here because you’re an idiot.?
