So glad for you and the kids. These girls really are our babies and bring so much joy. Love that you're sounding like you're feeling better. Lacie deserves Tobe with her family! I specially chose australorps largely because they are from Australia and accustomed to heat tolerance as a breed. And because hawks in my area seem to think they are fat crows. My girls are almost 4 yrs old now.
@realsimplemama

Yes and my Lenore was an Australorp - that girl was so smart and so stubborn and so independent. I’d love to see if that’s a consistent trend with the breed, I miss her big beautiful personality so much! And that’s a really good theory about looking like big crows!

Awe. I just thought you wouldn’t be happy unless you had chickens. The aluminate shade cloth really makes a difference. It’s very inexpensive on Amazon. I have a Summer area for my chickens it’s under a huge oak tree so they stay cool in there, they are safe! I will have a Winter coop and run I pray the run is safe! I need to do a video and just see if it is. I have Buff’s, barred rocks, blue Plymouth rocks and some Easter eggers and one rescue rooster. These breads are so sweet. Even my rooster is sweet. I love my chickens. They just grow on you and melt your heart. Glad you’re keeping chickens. Sending hugs! Wendy🙏🏻🇺🇸🌎

It's so hard to lose em😢. I lost my MOJO Rising (from the Doors, LA Woman- her favorite. She'd recognize Jim's voice in other songs, too). She was so very special! If she got loose she'd be out to find me! She taught me a chickenese phrase that got everybody's attention and they'd obey. When my daughter was pregnant she KNEW there was life inside her. And when her son was born MOJO just adored him! She had wisdom far beyond what was normal. She was Queen! I lost her 2 years ago and I still miss her every single day! She was amazing☆! And my dear friend, I was blessed to have had her in my life.

So happy for you and looking forward to seeing your new babies and the changes! We've added the 4 extra fans that I got on the walmart website under heading 'Mainstays 6" Desktop, Clip AC Electric Household Personal Fan With 2 Speed White.' They were $10; just checked and of course they went up - $11.46. Any coop could be adjusted to be able to clip them on the outside facing in. I had to run heavy duty extension cord from our house since I don't have elec in the run. I use a special elec hub for safety. We're adding the water mister system (by synell); approx $20 on sale from $33. and we have a timer. Sprinkler is great idea also - just make sure to get a timer and a split for the hoses so you can run a dedicated hose for the chicken run. Blessings.

I'm so sorry for this time of grief but soooo happy you decided to get more hens. Consider getting Speckled Sussex (very friendly) and Barnevelder. Name suggestions are Stella, Gabby, Fiona, Matilda and Olivia. I can't wait to see your new flock in your revamped area!

I completely empathize with you, Sarah, as we lost five of our sweet girls since early June (three of which were lost due to heat stroke). It's so tough to keep them cool enough, even with a sprinkler/misting system and the more than adequate shade of many rhododendron trees in their run. We all just do our best! I was really rootin' for ya and SO happy you've decided to continue being a chicken mama/tender. We're an ever growing community which shares invaluable information from chicken health, to understanding what incredible little sentient beings chickens truly are! The future is exciting! Bless!!💛🐔

I know you're in Texas but have you tried the old cooler method? Not Styrofoam, but old plastic set it in a shade spot outside near where Lacie lays. Go buy a big bag of ice and stick it in there, no lid on cooler. It will slowly put off cool air as ice melts. You can even do 2 bags of ice if cooler is big enough. Sorry for your losses and hope this helps your lady/new ladies stay cool in sweltering Texas heat.

I love watching your channel. I am raising three backyard chickens in the Phoenix, AZ area and it has been extremely hot this summer here as well. We found an inexpensive way to keep my chickens cool. We have a heavy duty tarp over their run for shade. We have an outdoor waterproof fan we bought on amazon that we leave running 24/7. We run a mister in front of the fan that is connected to our spigot on an automatic timer. We run the mister from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm. The chickens will stay by the mister to stay cool in the heat of the day. The misters will also keep the dirt moist so the ground stays cool on their feet. Glad to hear you will be getting more chickens. They are such wonderful pets.

So sorry to hear about Gracie and Lenore...but also happy that you're continuing your journey. It's finally cooled off here in North Texas over the past few days so hopefully y'all won't be far behind. I started this year with three Black Australorps so they're still young (one started laying 1.5 weeks ago and a second just started doing the "squat" today!) but they've done really well with the North Texas summer heat. Of course it hasn't been quite as humid but it'd still be like 102°F or dip below triple digits about 6:00 p.m. and they'd start sprinting across the yard like FINALLY IT'S COOLED OFF A BIT WE CAN GO PLAY NOW 😂. The breed was developed in Australia so they're probably supposed to be okay at dealing with the extreme temperatures in the outback. Then, as of yesterday, I have 7 more chicks inside I'll boot outside in a separate coop structure here in a couple days once the rain chances are gone and it warms up a little bit more with one of those dual coop brooder/heater. A couple of the new chicks are cream/opal legbars I'm trying and then my neighbor swears by her black copper marans that they do good in the summers (definitely NOT the rhode island red she says despite what Google wants to tell you) so I got some of those as well. The Wyandottes are gorgeous...I thought about getting some when I was debating on the Australorps but I found conflicting information about their heat tolerance, would you say they're pretty good at dealing with the summers until they get older or what's been your experience with that breed?
@realsimplemama
@realsimplemama 28 дней назад
Hi! I have a breed video about the Wyandottes - I did lose one early on in my chicken, tending journey because she did get too hot in the coop. Unfortunately, though that was also before I knew a lot of what I know now, so it took me losing her for me to do more research and improve my set up. Lacie is definitely a big girl but she’s still alive and kicking! I think I have just had to have a lot of little tricks, from lots of water to lots of shade and other things that I do to really help her out. And I’ll probably always worry a bit more for the Wyandottes than the others. ✌🏻❤️🐓 I’m so happy for you and your flock too!

❤ what a happy update! So glad Lacie will be getting some new buddies soon. In my limited experience, our speckled Sussex and Dominiques have fared the best in our heat. My Orpington seems to be least heat tolerant of our bunch, but she’s such a cutie though lol… Also, we’ve been slowly sifting out our rocks from our chicken area. I recommend getting your kiddos some colanders from dollar tree to sift them out. My son enjoys it 😂

I’m having a problem with rocks as well do you try to get rid of as much as possible and how much mulch and how much is it topsoil that you’re buying? I’m pretty new to owning chickens as well and I think your channel is one of the best. Thank you.
@realsimplemama
@realsimplemama 21 день назад
Hi! I’m trying to carry some of the rocks out in old pots of buckets, or take to the edges of the chicken run. I don’t measure how much soil and mulch, it comes down to what’s on sale and how deep of a layer you want! If I was trying to cover my own chicken run I would need 25-30 large bags but I’m not concerned with trying to make it perfect. They’ll mess it all up anyway. 😉✌🏻❤️🐓

Brahamas have become my favorite but not sure how well they would do in your extreme heat. But here in Arkansas we have the humidity and get into the 100’s and as long as I put ice in their water they seem to do fine. I got some Lavendar Orpingtons they are light grey and seem to be more gentle than my buff ones. Go figure. Welsummers are flighty but sweet and they lay speckled eggs. All my Wyndottes are great birds and my Barred Rock. My chicken math has gotten me 34 chickens and 1 rooster by mistake. Lol. Love them all.

You have a great mix! And yes I’ve always wanted brahmas even though they’re huge, and Buffingtons (buff Orpington). ✌🏻❤️🐓 I don’t really know much at all about Welsummers though I think they’re beautiful, and my one lavender orp turned out to be a b!tch and had to be rehomed. 🤣
