NOTES:
Once you start raising broilers in chicken tractors you life will never be the same. If you're a meat eater then you'll see that raising birds this way gives you the best tasting most high quality protein you can find.
After your first batch of chickens you'll start to develop a system and year to year it becomes easier, almost second nature.

The sound effects and the rooster got this one a thumbs up and a comment. I LOVE my Suscovich chicken tractor. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EVERYONE BUY THE PLANS. I have had it a full year. Now to build a new one with customization for MY operation. I am just a hobbiest. They are prepping my garden area as I type this. 9 birds get moved twice a day.

I like the way you talked about doing things with what you already have. I agree that things are rarely perfect but it is very important that you work within your means and not go into debt every time you hear of a "new, better system". Also, by taking a few minutes to clean the feeders and waterers disease is kept down. Thank you for taking the time to post such a nicely done video. Jeff

I love your set up John....thx for your upload.....I'm next on the line to start up a chicken farm..... and I would like to know more information and how I can get on the ground. I really have the passion for this since childhood but hadn't started yet.... my dreams could come true if I get on the ground without wasting more time by being employed. 5 years into the field I can see the experience is more than enough to get me the knowledge I need here....John If its OK with you share some knowledge with me I'm ready to digest and absorb.....as u you answer my questions. .....help me pleaaaase!!.. thanks

John, what kind of crates are you using to transfer the birds? According to your book (Stress-Free Chicken Tractor Plans), the door is 24" wide and, based on the video Justin made, the door is 24" because it fits your crates and prevents the birds from making a mad dash out of the tractor. The crates appear to be (guestimating here) about 21-22" wide.

Hey John, You're using a spray nozzle on the end of that hose... Swap that out with a 1/4 turn ball valve. You'll be amazed at how much faster that bucket will fill up. The cost is comparable to the spray nozzle but the time savings are totally worth it.

Hi, thanks for the great videos. Got two questions concerning this video 1. You dont clean the tractor itself? Ours are a complete mess after a batch is completed and i wouldnt dare to put new chicks into it (especially the wood which is touching the ground and the white tarp) 2. As far as i understood you leave the cut down grass on the field, when we did this, we had a big problem with stuffed goiters, ending in about 50% of the in question birds dead and the other 50% with significant weight loss greetings from germany (so excuce my bad english) Sören

Do you tractor any layers? I’ve got 50 laying chickens coming to my place on Wednesday and I’m building my first tractors for them. Going to put 25 birds in each 8 X 10 tractors. I have build something like what you have. We are in Jamaica so we have a very limited supply of materials to build with. I’ve got most everything built but I’m still playing with the nesting boxes. Not sure how I’ll do that. I have several ideas but still not sure.

Add a lid to your water bucket to keep airborne dirt etc out. A little apple cider vinegar is nice too, but you will want to better predict how much they will consume so you are not dumping too much as you freshen the water daily

@gobbleraddict
@gobbleraddict 7 лет назад
There is a better way. Go down the middle of the field for your first pass. When near field's end turn left all the way, cross your track, keep turning left till you can start right back down against your first pass. It would be driving in the shape of a capital "I" the first pass, always and only turning left. After 2-4 strips have been mowed you are then mowing in a left turning large fashion. Then you never have to reverse even once. Plan ahead to avoid soil compaction! Great vid btw!

I'm interested to see how your progress to see if our issues are from overcrowding. We started with 36 rangers per tractor, all roos this batch. All was great until a few weeks ago and we noticed some major differences in size and then in one tractor pecking and cannibalism. I know diet isn't issue, so I'm thinking overcrowding and too much testosterone. Not fun.

Hi john, Not sure if you said but how old are these birds when you put them out on grass? Also, have you ever shown where you store the chickens after you process them? Freezer setup? You have chest freezers? Thank you! Keep Rockin' !
@farmmarketing
@farmmarketing 7 лет назад
Yes! Loving it lately. I shot all the footage for how I freeze and store my chickens, I just have to edit it. But it's coming and already in process. Trying to manage 5 day a week videos, we'll see how it goes. These birds were around 3-4 weeks when I put them out on grass. I don't have the number in front of me. I was a little behind and it was closer to 4 but I got held up in other areas of the farm and we had a ton of rain so I kept them a little safer until we had a window with some decent weather.
@SowtheLand
@SowtheLand 7 лет назад
Awesome! We just ordered another batch of rangers and we are only at week one with them. But maybe thinking of putting them on grass after week two. I guess it depends on how they look and weather. Looking forward to that freezer video! Thanks John!

Wouldn't count on goats to keep that grass mowed. Sure they'll much off the field, but they'll leave a lot behind and will choose to hang out on the edges of the field, munching on low lying leaves. I'm thinking of adding a sheep to my flock for this exact reason.
@jeremybrua5523
@jeremybrua5523 6 лет назад
Masca Trails sheep are much better at eating grass than goats. Goats are picky with grass. They don't like it to short or to long. I've had to cut grass because it was to tall then the ended up eating after it was cut.

How clever of you to let them become accustomed to their tractor from week one! I have not seen that before. I love it! I'm glad you switched away from the Cornish ×; they make pretty carcasses, but are pretty insipid to my way of thinking. I haven't tried Freedom Rangers, but I have tried Delawares - much tastier because of their activity than the Cornish crosses. Slow food is better, IMO. Love your videos; thanks for posting. I hope you neck is feeling better. P.S. I really wish Premier One would watch your video on the modification you made to their grounding spike! I wish I knew how to weld so I could do the same thing.

I have yes. They take to it very easily and from the beginning you can have them drinking out of the nipple drinkers. One thing to watch out for though in the brooder is the nipple drinkers splash a little and you can get a real wet spot under the drinker. Just have some dry shavings on hand and scoop out the wet stuff as you go. it helps prevent brooder-centric diseases.

Hi John what is your market price there for a finished ranger? Is it higher than the broiler due to the extra 4weeks it takes to raise? Thank you.

We haven't finalized the price with this batch. We might bump them up for covering the extra 4 weeks. I'll keep you posted.

I don't purchase birds for its vivaciousness, intellect,or energy. I'm not trying to date the bird! I purchase them to convert them to food as quickly as possible. Cornish X taste better anyway. How are rangers anything but a lose, lose proposition? That extra six weeks that you are finishing out the rangers could be another run of Cornish X. Love those tractors though!!

It can depend on market Therlo. If people are willing to pay for rangers and want that type of bird then maybe it works out. But I agree, I buy birds to be productive and compete in the market place and for me it's CC all the way.
