Chickens as Tick Control

We have had chickens in our yard for two summers now, and we have noticed a decrease in the amount of deer ticks. Obviously this is not a scientific study, but I believe the free range chickens are eating the ticks and we have had less tick encounters as a result.

We have chickens around our home as well. Rarely do we use tick preventatives anymore. Although we always step on chicken poop lol! Small price to pay for this natural tick predator.

damn they eat the ticks from the foliage? That's impressive because ticks are very small and grass should keep them hidden.

A lifetime of staring through foliage from nearly point blank range (sticking their heads down, etc) means they probably have a much different perception of that foliage, basically they probably see any bump/inconsistency within the grass and immediately investigate to find out if its edible.

My chickens are about a year old and we have a broody girl. We have already spotted two ticks. Today when I went to collect eggs from under broody, I noticed there were at least 12 glitter sized bugs. I am assuming they are ticks and am having trouble getting rid of them. None of my other 8 girls seem to have any ticks. What should I do?
@JimODonnellFarm
@JimODonnellFarm 6 лет назад
I have never seen a tick on our chickens. They eat the ticks. I think the glitter sized bugs you are seeing could be mites. They sometimes get in the nesting boxes. I would change the bedding in the boxes as a first step. I guess they could be ticks; did you look at them with a magnifying glass?

How do they not get eaten by predatory animals?
@JimODonnellFarm
@JimODonnellFarm 3 года назад
Years ago we lost several chickens to foxes, but we very rarely lose any. We are not certain why. it may have something to do with the cows; we have a large Scottish Highland bull, and I really think that helps a bit, though the chickens can go places that the cows can't.
@restorationlandscapingkankakee

@@restorationlandscapingkankakee most of those animals aren’t striking in broad daylight. Putting your chickens up at night is usually enough to keep them safe
@CLove511
@CLove511 2 года назад
For sure it's the cows. Cows, donkeys, horses, rams, and male sheep will all get aggressive and defensive of their herds around predators. I believe all of them can easily kill predators up to coyotes. Hawks (and in our case, vultures... And yes, they DO hunt) haven't been an issue, but our rooster calls to round up the hens if he senses danger. When they see hawks in the sky, they run for shelter.

@JimODonnellFarm
@JimODonnellFarm 3 года назад
We don't have dogs because they will usually bother the chickens, also because we have a lot of coyotes and they will sometimes attack a dog. We have lost some chickens to predators from time to time, but not as often as you would expect. Our worst loss was nine chickens to a fox one afternoon, but that was years ago.

our chickens don't get to go outside of there pin only if I take them out of there pin we don't let our chickens roam around because we have dogs and cats also a hawk once got one of our chickens the hawk draged the chicken into the chicken coop and ate the chicken my dad had to put gloves on and pick up the hawk and let him go so I don't really like Hawks

We have had hawks fly over and at the chickens, but we have never had a chicken eaten by a hawk. Our cat thinks he is a chicken and hangs around with them. We don't have a dog because of the chickens. They usually will kill chickens.

@JimODonnellFarm

I believe ducks will eat ticks. I have read that they will eat them, and it makes sense considering how they forage for food. I would expect that chickens are better at getting the ticks based upon the shape of their beak and from my experiences here on the farm, but I think ducks would also help eliminate ticks. We just got 14 ducklings that we are going to let roam around the farm once they get big enough, so I may know a bit more about this in the future.
