You can't force someone to give up an organ to save someone else's life, so why force then to give up their entire body? You can't even take organs from a dead person without consent. It's really a simple matter of bodily autonomy and yet so many people still don't get it
@pluspiping

That's exactly it, but conservative politicians need a Big Scary Boogeyman ("they're killing literal babies!!") to scare their voters into supporting them, so they harp on it a lot and really really hope you don't notice the cognitive dissonance. (Source: I used to be exactly like that).

Dead bodies are also great for medical research as well. Hell, back in the good ol days, medical schools would hire people to dig up the corpses from graveyards, because no one wanted to donate bodies since the church said autopsies prevent you from going to heaven. I personally, Vocally, and Publicly stated that I was against the government forcing vaccinations as well.
@crissycrossgaming
@crissycrossgaming 2 года назад
@@ZeljkoMikulec to your first point, I genuinely doubt this as the NHS has a programme that allows you to become an organ donor after death, and I doubt that a healthcare service would do that if it was so useless. To your second point, I personally believe the difference is that there is never a harm to external people if you choose not to give birth. For example, businesses not letting you through the door without a vaccine are doing so because you may be carrying a disease harmful to others. If you choose not to get a vaccine, you accept that response. The issue is, your choice to have an abortion will never impact someone outside of yourself except (on an emotional level) a partner or family, and will never physically endanger someone. So there isn’t really a logic behind stopping someone from getting one in that sense. This is just my opinion and the logic I see behind it, feel free to disagree with me.

It's good that people across the internet are speaking out about this issue, and I'm hopeful that things can and will get better with concerted effort and time. However, coming from a 19 year old with generally conservative parents, how do I even begin to talk about this issue with them? How can I approach the problem and start discourse without instantly triggering their defense mechanisms? The divide growing between my beliefs and others' I care about is getting bigger and I have no clue how to even start to remedy it.
@Vihart
@Vihart 2 года назад
You're not alone in that difficulty, and maybe others have better advice than I. For me, for some folks I just need to accept that they are probably not going to change, and build my boundaries around that. I can be open and honest about my beliefs without trying to change theirs, and not base any aspect of our relationship on the hope that they will be convinced. It might not be the relationship I hoped to have with that person, but maybe it's the one that works.
@sungalaxia
@sungalaxia 2 года назад
For me, it's the fact that you can't force someone to donate an organ to save someone else's life--not even after they're dead. You couldn't force someone to serve as life support for another human being, even if that meant that other person would die. And yet that is essentially what pregnancy is--a mother serving as life support for the baby. In no other circumstance would that even be considered an option, to force someone to be life support for someone else, even family. Moreover, abortion is also the procedure to remove ectopic pregnancies as well as miscarriages; without access to it, mothers will die for a baby that would never have been able to be born. Third: when you criminalize abortion, every miscarriage is a potential crime scene. Mothers who are already morning their lost child could be investigated for malice or reckless behavior that could have led to the miscarriage, and be prosecuted for manslaughter or, as the law might be written, even murder. Lastly, Roe v. Wade was decided based on privacy--a personal health decision between you and your doctor. Not only will women and others not be able to be truthful about their medical history with their doctors, but it also sets a precedent that other medical decisions don't belong to the persons involved either, but rather to the government.
@pluspiping

My advice from being dependent on my bitterly conservative father: Wait until you are no longer dependent on your parents (moved out, etc) before you try to say anything that you think might possibly be dangerous for you. That way if they get belligerent, you can just leave. They can't threaten to throw you out of the house, etc. Sometimes they'll admit you have a point. Sometimes they'll just get mad and angry and yell. But your first priority has to be keeping yourself safe. (And if you're not moved out and everything at 19, don't worry, just focus on the next step toward taking care of yourself.) In my case, after I moved out, my dad and I eventually had to establish a cease-fire - no talking about politics or religion when I visited. Our constant disagreements were getting nowhere, he was getting angrier and angrier, and yet I still wanted to talk to my mom. So if/when my dad tried to goad me into a contentious discussion or topic, I made it clear that I'd just leave. And I followed through on that (much to his rage). But more often than not, the cease-fire worked... in the sense that I didn't have to completely cut off contact with him. I never did change many of his conservative opinions. It's great that you want to try to have difficult discussions with your parents. People are more likely to change their minds when it's a loved-one talking to them. Talk about how it makes you feel. How it makes your friends feel. You will want to understand what your parents are scared of to understand where they're coming from (conservatives are often very afraid, which feeds into reactionist anger). Avoid labeling people or making value judgements about people (nobody appreciates being called a fascist or misogynist or bigot or the like). But no matter how civil and gentle you are, people will often feel "attacked" when you firmly disagree with them because the disagreement is what feels threatening to them - to their sense of the world. They're likely having to make a whole worldview change, a paradigm change, if they want to agree with you. It may take a long time and happen in small increments, or not at all. They might just stop saying things that you disagree with when you're around, but at least you've made your point that you disagree with them. The lists and the possibilities go on and on. But also have an idea of what your boundaries need to be. Yours may work differently from mine. At the end of the day, it's not Your Job To Convince Them. It's not even your job to Stick Around Hoping They'll Change. If they change, now or later/eventually, great! But sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is emotionally distance yourself from people who are committed to angrily disagreeing with you. At whatever distance you can handle.

People's views on a subject can be generally classified as either "core" beliefs -- sometimes called axioms in reference to the term in formal logic -- or the results of combining core beliefs + facts + logic. The good thing about discussing an issue with people close to you like your parents is that they'll probably be patient enough to explain their views in detail, if you ask, such that you can figure out where exactly you disagree with them: on core beliefs, on facts, or on the logic used to turn those facts and axioms into a stance. If the issue is factual, telling somebody "your facts are wrong" is often a difficult matter which can trigger the "defense mechanisms" you mentioned; effective ways of correcting objectively incorrect beliefs will vary somewhat depending on the recipient. I'd usually suggest just demonstrating the differences between your respective information sources, explaining why the other person's isn't as trustworthy as yours in this situation, but then leaving him/her to do more research independently and picking up the conversation some time later. Of course, one of the most common defense mechanisms these days is "any source which disagrees with mine is partisan," but that should hopefully be possible to defeat by directly pointing out how that closed-mindedness is born of a fear of being proven wrong, which isn't an attitude that someone interested in the truth should have. If the issue's logical, that's generally the easiest to resolve between people who respect each other. If you start with the same facts and axioms but end up in different places, just retrace your steps and figure out where you or the other person went wrong logically. But, on an issue like this, disagreements are often axiomatic. And that's not really something you can always resolve. Sometimes people's core beliefs are just irreconcilably different. Arguments from emotion can sometimes work in that situation, but pretty much the only rational way you can attack an axiom is by proving that someone holds contradictory core beliefs, and that line of argument is the *most* likely of all to trigger those "defense mechanisms". All I can suggest in the event that you do find a contradiction to attack is to take it slowly; another advantage of discussing things with people close to you like your parents is that you don't have to finish the discussion in an hour or even in a week. Break down the walls bit by bit, frequently pausing to give the other person time to digest what you've said. Still, as Vi and pluspiping said, if it *is* an axiomatic divide, prepare for the possibility that you may never come to an agreement on the subject. I think it's worth a try if you care about the people in question, but don't force it if it's not happening. And always stay open-minded enough to consider the possibility that you're being just as hard to convince of the truth as the other person is, or that your information source is in fact the biased one. In this particular situation, I doubt that's the case based on what you've said, but discounting that option entirely is never healthy. It's far too easy to fall into the trap of thinking it's your job to "educate" others and to stop taking their viewpoints seriously as a result.

@@sungalaxia the difference between your life support scenario and pregnancy is this. In the life support instance, saving the person is the active action, and letting the person die is the passive action. It’s ok for someone to not decide to take actions to save someone else. After all, you can’t force them to. With pregnancy, however, letting the baby live is the passive action, and abortion is the active action. You have to make the direct decision to kill the baby. People can’t be allowed to make that decision. The wording “forcing people to act as life support for the baby” is a bit misleading.

You should not be able to be forced to be pregnant by the government for 9 months and then have to raise a child for at least 18 years; or put it up for adoption in an awful system that more often than not results in abuse, trauma, and NEGLECT for that childs entire period in the system and sometimes out of it.

The government never forces anyone to become pregnant, but the state is interested in protecting human life, once formed. I'm not sure why that interest would only kick in After the child is born, but not before. There's nothing fundamental about being outside of the womb v. being inside the womb when it comes to human life. I'm with you that we need a better foster system. Right now if I'm sick and the only thing that could save my Life was your blood, currently the government _cannot_ force you to give it to me. (I'm not sure exactly what Grashman was referring to in their post; thus provided some supplemental and tangential information): An estimated 25% of pregnancies result in a miscarriage [2]. A smaller subsection of miscarriages may require immediate surgery (due to infection, heavy bleeding, or remaining tissue has not left the uterus in a specific timeframe) [3]. These are not necessarily miscarriages that are induced. Having a septate Uterus: "it is unknown why women with a septate uterus have a higher chance of miscarriage. Not all women with a septate uterus [have] a miscarriage" [4] (the following is my speculation and a guess but PLEASE consult qualified medical professional in the matter. If you have a septate uterus which causes a miscarriage, you may need to have abortion.) It is also notable that a septate uterus may result in preterm births and fetal malpresentation [5] Footnotes: [1] Reviewed 13 january 2020, www.webmd.com/baby/pregnancy-ectopic-pregnancy [2] Under What is a miscarriage section: reviewed on 16 april 2022 www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/miscarriage [3] Surgery section. I think one of the problems is that progressives tend to think nationally and mainly vote nationally. None of my nieces and nephews, all voting age, could name their state congresspeople and some didn't know their governor, much less their city assembly representative. Your fingers!!! Please tuck your fingers (the ones that are holding onto the food), meaning you want your digits in a similar parallel plane to the blade's cutting plane. Thus as the chopping plane comes close to intersecting your fingers, the blade rides up against your knuckles before it can really cross and violate any of your fingers. This gives you 1 second to 3 to actually react rather than milliseconds. (more by touch and less by visuals, that you can internalise the blade has gone too far vs just chopping too far over).

pro-birthers love to make the discussion about when live begins and whether or not it can be considered taking a life, but it's just irrelevant. Everyone has a right to bodily autonomy at all times. We don't force people to donate their blood, tissues, or organs, even after their death, even though that could save the lives of people we all agree are definitely alive. You're even allowed to pull the plug on someone if you're the one paying for the machinary that keeps them alive. Consent can also be retracted in other situations, e.g. if people are having consensual $€× but in the middle one of them wants to stop, then they have retracted their consent and if the other continues it then it is r@p€. So really this shouldn't be an issue. Of course, it is still sad if a (potential) person dies or never gets the chance to become a person, and the procedure isn't easy on the pregnant person either so that's another reason to want to reduce them, but if we want to reduce that, then we should focus instead on reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies trough good comprehensive $€×-ed and acesibility to contraceptives, as well as make the choice of keeping it better trough good child support from the government, and a good adoption and foster care system that people dont feel like it could be traumatic for the child.

I don't like abortion a lot of the time. I think everything has the right to live, whether it be a grown adult, a child, an animal, or a fetus, so admittedly there are a lot of cases where I feel like abortion just goes against my morals. Despite all of that, I can't imagine what it would feel like to be forced to have a child, knowing you may not be able to support it, knowing it may grow up in an unstable household or broken foster system, knowing that you may die for this child. As horrifying of a moral dilemma that is, it's a moral dilemma that needs to be decided by the victim, the one being directly affected by it, rather than the United States government.

I think we have this popular image of young adolt women aborting babies nilly willy, like taking an alka seltzer after a hard night of partying. Young mothers killing their unborn child just because they don't want to stop their carefree life of parties and fucking around. But even if this thing happens - with 8 billion people anything remotely probable will happen at some point - for the overwhelming majority of women it's not a light decission. And even between the already mentioned carelessness and rape victims forced to carry a child, probably even with life threatening consequences there are a lot of situations where an abortion - as hard as it might be - is the only viable decission. Combine this with the utter lack of sexual education in some areas and the outright banning of counterceptives, it feels like it's less about saving unborn life, but about controlling peoples behaviour. We - from the outside - simply can't fathom what leads to decissions, but everybody likes to presume they do.

And as already stated, being barred from entry somewhere because you are a danger for someone doesnt seem a far stretched, which being unvaccinated is. Doing an abortion has nothing to do with it. You are just combining 2 things you are against together and think everyone else that doesnt agree with you, also doesnt agree with all those things. We all think different things on different subjects

OH TRIANGLE, PREACH THY TRUTH!! seriously though, I will never understand the motives behind those that are anti-abortion. if they want the baby alive, maybe *they* should care for it themselves. plus, it isn't even that alive yet.

But they do think its alive, simple as. Some even think if you terminate a pregnancy at any time the soul of the fetus will go straight to hell.

The saddest part is that other women also want to ban abortion. We just got our rights and now you're taking them away?

As someone who would probably be shunned by either side of the aisle, it just seems like there's two arguments going on. The answer to each argument is obvious to any stable mind, but unfortunately there are bad actors on either side of the issue conflating things. Politics doesn't exist without conflict.

Can I ask the 2 arguments being presented?

There's a chance I might be inhabited by an ultra-conservative imp (my id), but in the overall political sphere, I've never really understood so-called "conservatives" who want to regulate private life but not public entities. I'd go on, but over time I'd out myself as a tired old "neoliberal" (however you define that term) cynical centrist bore and boor.
