Teary eyed when I remember the world as basic living in the 70's... Miss the big cars, fruit stands and summer days seeing people actually enjoying life playing and having fun outdoors, instead of locked indoors on mobile devices.
Hello. I have almost the entire Chico and the Man series on DVD & I'm currently in talks with NBC seeking permission to (legally) post the series on RU-vid. I need support. I don't want to anger NBC by having 100s of people email them, so I thought a petition would be a better way to show that there's interest in the series. Can I count on your support to sign the petition asking NBC to allow me to post the series here? Thank you. Petition: chng.it/wqVKGnh5

This song, along with John Sebastian's "Welcome Back" are probably the two most recognizable theme songs of the 1970s. I'll also include Barney Miller's instrumental theme song.
I love this show! Freddie Prinze, Jack Albertson, Scatman Crothers, Della Reese. Great show, and the theme song sung by Jose Feliciano that was the jam!! Freddie was a comedic genius, with a very bright future. Unfortunately Freddie Prinze battled a lot of demons, and he internalized a lot of their problems ultimately committing suicide. Shocking, very sad and tragic.....#GoneTooSoon

This song always makes me smile. I grew up watching this show and Freddie Prinze always made me laugh. We were born on the same date in the same city, only he was a number of years older than me. When I first visited Hollywood in 2007, I went to visit his crypt at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills and left him a red rose. Still miss him.
Family and friends this song reminds me of. Going to the park and having a picnic. Going to have a big get together once this COVID is over. Everything rolled up into one that we missed the past year.
I always loved the low-rider at 0:53. Even as a little kid in the 70's, I gravitated towards all Spanish culture. Couldn't get enough of it. Remember this came on Friday nights after Sanford and Son. No better way to enjoy pizza than watching this. So saddened by Freddie Prinze's death. He had everything to live for.

+Thomas Moon I remember that day also, I was 14yrs old in the 9th grade, and a big fan of Freddie Prinze, it was a total shock! I cried too.......#GreatComedicGeniusGone2Soon
I too was in elementary when this came out. This and Welcome Back Kotter are my ultimate favorite theme songs ever. I sing this song like it's going to be the last time I'll ever sing, that's how much passion it has. Why would this be controversial?
Many great childhood memories raised in San Diego/South East San Diego/Linda Vista...and my first little childhood girlfriend Cecilia Ramirez. The images in this TV show intro always reminded me of those times. 😊❤️

We will never see a show such as Chico and the man ever again. Nobody wants to keep the continuity of the original shows thus ruining these once perfect classical shows which are the foundation and break thru show that broke barriers! Today's tv executives are so brain dead to come up with original ground breaking shows are extremely few and far between! If you want to bring them back try their success formula...
So great to revisit the opening theme of the show some 40+ years later. It just nails the times. Such warm and wonderful images of community. Opened a window to a whole different culture to a white kid like me 1,000s of miles away, the sameness of us too. Just wonderful times to be growing up in a changing America........

One of the best shows of the 70s; Loved that theme song, and Lord, I didn't know there was any controversy on the song. I haven't heard that song in years. Had to come here to check it out. Thanks for the memories.

This song is one of the most beautiful TV themes ever! Feliciano is awesome, and this show was BRILLIANT! Every time I hear this song, it makes me feel warm and wistful for the way tv and entertainment used to be - when there were quality performers EVERYWHERE!
IMO, this is the best tv theme song ever. U can hear the entire version on on you tube or download it. Chico & the Man was a wonderful show and really innovative for it's time
any Donalds out there like me that thought at :52 it sounded like he was saying your name? "Donald, things will be better". Great song. I remember there was a theme song website that only had theme songs as wav files, glad youtube brought back all the classics.
Spud Spinnigan I have no idea. I just remember really liking this show, and that when my parents explained what happened to Freddie, it's one of the first things I remember ever being sad about.
+Spud Spinnigan - The show was from Norman Lear. Maybe they thought the theme song and even the show was preachy in its message of breaking down barriers and getting to know people of other cultures. The themes reflected Lear's liberal values. However I don't see them as really controversial but certain people think everything Lear did was offensive because it made you think outside some people's comfort zone.
I'm at a loss as to figure out how to get back to the initial discussion and who replied to whom, what they said, and so forth, so please excuse me. I just get pinged when somebody responds and +spuds me. When "Chico and the Man" came out, it was, as far as I know, the first time a "Latino" was allowed the lead role in a prime-time TV show. The issues he raised--mostly as asides--were issues that the general US public hadn't been exposed to. Thus, "controversial" with a small "C.".
It was the 70's I was a teenager and Vietnam was ending and things where looking up . Rock music was changing and R and B was growing soon to be Disco and dance and fun were all around , yeah I'd go back !

Nobody rocks like Jose... or understands the emotions available in a collection of musical notes of the voice or by an instrument. Thanks for post. Regards
man you hit it right on the head, those three songs are my favorites from that time and I was only 5years old when I used to watch them.here it is 32 years later and It crossed my mind to search for all three and my heart is so glad:)
The three Gypsy Rose's are still ( Looking Good ) all these years later it's a testament of the quality of the craftsmanship. Jesse Valadez is a true pioneer innovator and legend of the Low Rider scene. RIP Jesse Valadez. RIP Freddie Prinze.
David frye+, God bless you. A lot of comments on You Tube are full of hate and bigotry... Yours makes me smile and puts faith into humanity and know there are still good folks who don't wish ill will on their fellow man(woman). Amen, my friend... I hope they all have lived a good life.
Boofdfast. Good afternoon. Thanks. And I forgot to mention. Freddie Prinze and Jack Albertson. Well I wish they were still alive and doing fine. Freddie would have gone a long way. And also the Gypsy Rose Low Rider. It was owned by Mr. Jesse Valadez. I remember shootin the breeze with Jesse many years ago at a Low Rider car show in Los Angeles. He was a good man and perfect gentleman. Freddie, Jack, and Jesse. R.I.P. I sure miss you guys.

Love this song. Wish I could turn the clock back to these times!!! One of my favorite shows and theme songs from the 1970's (a era that will never be matched.)

My mother grew up watching this show, mainly due to Freddie Prinze. She bought the DVD collection of this show and, on a whim, I decided to watch it with her. I must say this is one of the greatest sitcoms I've ever seen. Too bad there aren't show like "Chico & The Man" nowadays.
It wasn't controversial. It's just an upbeat little song about two very different people getting to understand each other. And it's definately not racist. People are clueless.
I lived in Ohio and watched every episode. I'm not the guy who usually adds comments, but this show really hit a chord for me. Welcome, Back Kotter and this made me see diversity in a new light. Sorry to preach. As a musician the songs ring true. Baretta is another one that hits me strongly. Sammy Davis, Jr. delivers very hard commentary on crime. I hope everyone enjoys the tunes as much as I do.

Well put. This show was pretty important to me and my family. Being Chicanos we weren't used to seeing ANYONE on TV that represented us back then. Also, I love the shots of East Los. We lived there for a while before moving back North (my mom was raised in Boyle Heights). Thanks for posting this.
@JessTea You said it all. We used to get this on Thursday night on BBC2 in the UK. Such happy memories. I used to sing the song in the bath when I was a kid.
I was, I was a baby and just realized just what an impact this show made. The death and just how sunshine-like the show was. It was interestly profound about what had happened in the confines of this show both in front of the camera and behind it.
I sing this in my head every day at work. I liked the message when I was a kid and I love it now. This latino and this old white guy took care of each other. What I got from this show is that family isn't just your blood--it is whoever loves you. These guys and Scat-Man and Della showed what community was all about. We need this show now more than ever.
this song was so much more important then a TV sitcom theme song. Chico was short for Chicano. The Mexican American who was trying to find his place in America. A positive message by a great artist. so much different then the hate and victim mentallty the Mexicans , liberals and democrats spew nowadays. Thank Jose for this timeless and important music. It crosses all race barriers. Jose is saying DONT BE A VICTIM ! ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION BLACK LIVES MATTER ?????
+dakinebud187 I too remembered this program and the opening is vaguely familiar to me with all of the passing footage of migrants walking the streets, looking for a dream. I just think this song is morose for an introduction to a comedy. Comedies usually have an upbeat tempo where the lyrics are equal in importance. This song and opening montage sequence may have turned off most Americans who weren't particularly thrilled about Mexican immigration.

i remember this show and when i listen i feel a sense of sadness because freddie prinz is so missed and was such a wonderful performer ..but it also makes me feel a sense of joy this song cause things will be better .....
I went to Mission Viejo High in the early 70's. Had a classmate that told many stories of hanging out with Jose. Quite the cool cat, and very talented.
This theme song is so good I bought the album on vinyl. Jose Feliciano “And The Feeling’s Good.” The whole album, which includes a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Golden Lady” is great!
On this day in 1975 {April 12th} Jose Felliciano performed "Chico and the Man" on the late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'... Three months earlier on January 25th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart for a two-week stay, peaking at #96... It was theme song of the TV series of the same name, the series ran from 1974 to 1978... The series starred Jack Albertson & Freddie Prinze; Mr. Albertson won an Academy Award in 1969 for 'Best Supporting Actor' for "The Subject Was Roses"...
freedie was a genious he was the latin lenny bruce and opened so many doors ...he was gone too soon from us but always remembered..the theme songs always makes me think of him with a smile and a tear...G-D bless freddie
Chico and the man Ran from 1975 to 77 I belive. I was born in 71 and I remember this show being onthe air and watching it. I cant explain why, but The theme song always makes me sad even to this day. When I was a kid it made me cry. It seems to be filled with hope and despair at the same time if you really listen to the lyrics. Jose' Feliciano got an award for this theme. We all Miss Freddie :(
