+kelloverdose rey my parents also said I got straight A's because I got lucky. And I cried about that, I feel like I can never fulfill their dreams upon me. So I stopped studying for 3 months and they were so panic lmao.
"Maybe today he was kinda lucky" like WTF? Ryan is smart. Your just pressuring him and didn't even give him some praise or encouragement words. Instead you said that. You should've said," Im so proud to my little boy. His been working so hard and im just so proud of him." Sorry if I offended, but seriously.
+Zuni There is a random effect, the same reason you want to test a theory many times. He(the kid) may have gotten lucky. I am sure this genius was mature enough to know his parents love him, I mean its instinct.
I feel so sorry for Ryan. You can see the disappointment in his face. I remember when I got my GCSEs results, my mum said she has to put on her glasses to double check, and then she asked me if my teacher got the papers mixed up. My dad said something similar but hey -- I'm more capable than I'm led to believe
Poor kid, 2:19 instead of complimenting the kid and telling him he did great etc, him mother said maybe today he was just lucky... Poor kid, all that hard work and effort...
That's how they raise their kids. It was really ok because they just do it to Ryan so that he won't be cocky and to aim higher. She's not saying that it's only luck was the reason that he was there it's because he's lucky that he could've been in the last 5.
sn0ー Yea, parents feel a bit pushy. This seems similar to they beauty pageants, where the parents are worse than the kids, I could easily see arguments like “my kid is smarter than your kids” a bit of an ego trip and I feel unfair putting kids under this sort of pressure.
Chika yeah. I was like 2nd in every grade I've been to and they still make me feel like I should be at the top. But I know it's just to make me stay humble and aim higher.
I got c's when I was in elementary school. Now I'm in middle and I get straight A's. Why? Because my parents always make me feel good about myself. And they always to tell me that they're proud of me no matter what. My friend was a straight A student. Now she gets D's. Why? Because her parents pressure her too much. Thanks Asian parents!
These kids are freaking mind-blowingly-awesome but, this kinda reminds me of Toddlers and Tiaras. It's mostly for their parents ego's. Presidents are well connected, look out for banks, corporations, financiers, say complete bullshit with total confidence and keep the status quo, it has very little to do with being smart but, it helps.
This episode is pure proof that geniuses can't be extremely proficient in all subjects. Vanya, who won the whole show, did worse than Ryan in this Math and Geography round. Clearly, Vanya has her strengths and weakness. It was the structure of the show and the order of the categories that helped her win. Please note that I am in no way demeaning Vanya's win. But, if the Math & Geography category was the last category, Ryan may have had won the title of Child Genius(since the category that he was disqualified in may have disqualified another contestant in the early round, instead of Ryan.)
ThatOneGuy The same goes for Vanya losing to Tanishq and Katherine in the card memorization round. It was the structure of the rounds that resulted in Vanya's win. If the card memorization had been the final round, Katherine may have had a shot at winning.
+ThatOneGuy I think she won because she was "good enough" at her weakness, also the last round combined things like math and history and even other things. Wasn't one of the questions like multiply the number of years a certain president held office with the number of ribs you have.
Mom: “I don’t push him 😅” Home: “RYAN MEMORIZE THE FIRST 1,000 DIGITA OF PIE! DON’T FORGET TO DO 1 HOUR OF PIANO, 1 HOUR OF VIOLIN, AND MEMORIZE THE ENTIRE ENGLISH DICTIONARY!”
I believe it is if they truly have a passion for learning. Some kids just seem to be here because of their parents - I don't think that is healthy. But a lot of these kids have grown up being the top of their class and the smartest person in town. I think this a great challenge for those kids, as well as a humbling experience. A lot of these kids truly enjoy the competition. Granted, I'm nowhere near as intelligent as these children - But I love competitions. I love participating in new things and taking challenges that I may struggle in because it means I get to grow as a person and as a student. It's all based off of your love of learning.
YPeezy That's true! I don't think preparing is the issue for these children, though. They can retain information so easily, and preparing is actually fun for some of them. I think it's the pressure that's the unhealthiest part of this competition. Their parents and families constantly seem to pushing and wanting more.
+Sarah Holland they are portraying intelligence in a very wrong manner. These children seem not be intellectually gifted. Even if they are, they are being misguided by the society. As a gifted, I would say that there is no relation between the collection of abstract data and intelligence. Intelligence is all about the intensity with which one engages in a task.
"I always tell him that no one remembers number two" Meanwhile the father always stares at him as if not a single answer he gave was good or fast enough.
Ryan, you are a brilliant kid and I know you have spent great effort in getting to where you are today! Everyone is different, everyone has different learning styles and getting to their goals in different ways. Wise parents find ways to be in tune to their kids' needs, their styles, have patience and lift their kids' spirits along the way... I am glad you have the resilience in handling your parents' constant criticism... what they said on the shows were reflection of their own issues, their words were not reflection of you, again you are a brilliant 12-year old!! If Ryan's parents could leave Ryan alone, send words of sincere recognition and encouragement (words from the hearts, not with intention of making themselves look good in front of the cameras) and with love, believe it will not only help Ryan but make their lives a lot easier...
I have a friend a year younger than me who finished Algebra 1 in 6th grade (I’m taking it now as an 8th grader) and won a national robotics competition. She should really go on this show.
I feel bad for these kids. Knowledge is a fantastic thing but when they get older they will find that high intelligence and depression walk hand in hand.
I did Algebra 1 in 6th grade, and I'm still considered one of the less intelligent kids in my class. When I was in 8th grade, there were kids already doing Pre-calc.
+Long Nguyen When this show was looking for contestants, I was not notified of it and therefore didn't apply. Now I am currently too old to be on this show, thank you very much. Additionally, I have to ask, why would you suggest that I move to LA?
I can already see what these kid’s future will be. All this pressure from their childhood will definitely make them rebel. If you raise your kids under pressure, no sort of freedom, and only saying they did good cuz they got lucky is just gonna make them resent you. These kids are hella smart and they should be praised for that, not being told that it was luck and not their hard work. I hope they continue to do good cuz like they def got the criteria to go through the wrong crowd.
There is a huge difference between natural talent and parental pressure (AKA you are only brilliant at something because your parents pressured you into being so), and I think some kids are only brilliant because of the latter.
Most of this comment section is about how the parents weren’t being supportive... Welcome to the Asian lifeu. We’re A-sian not B-sian yet we could still do better than having an A+. We need an average of 4.00 in order to be “good enough” or else we’re like a disgrace to our parents. Like I’m not even joking I got grounded for 4 months bc of ONE B.... it wasn’t even a low B and a couple days after I brought it up. Also, we get lectured at home 24/7 along with the “sorry is not an excuse for getting a low A” phrase everyday. Sincerely, Asian kid.
Yeah lol, it's kinda the same for me except I don't get grounded for getting a B. I'm an A student and so when I get B's, you can just feel the disappointment radiating from my mum. 😂 Once I got a C and my mum told her friend, who sent me learning material for that subject for a whole term. She even got me a tutor for that subject. 😂 And when I come 2nd for something academic, the first thing my mum says is "Who came first?" or "Why didn't you come first?". For me it's not really that bad because I know it's just because she knows I can do better and she wants me to study really hard so I can have a good future. But wow, you seem to have it waaay harder than me.
Sorry for bragging about it here. I scored 160-170 on multiple IQ tests, even my parents noticed my advanced memory and tempo in problem solving after my teacher told them about it. I wouldn't be happy going to this show, since I hate being around too many people especially when I don't know them. Again, I am sorry for bragging about it. I just feel safer letting it out here, although this isn't the safest place.
This may be rude, but how would you describe or what a "normal person" is verses someone who excels in academics or even arts. Basically how would you have reworded his way of describing his life?
This show motivated kids to work hard that’s good improves work ethic. I suppose Ryan’s parents must rly love him a lot, as they always care what he is doing. The parents that don’t pay attention or don’t care what u do, don’t truly care about you
Reminds me of Kiril Kulish's mother (he was the fantastic ballet dancer who played one of the Billy Elliots) when an interviewer asked her if Kiril was interested in the ballet. "We didn't ask him," she answered. "We like the ballet so he took ballet. If he liked it, so much the better. If not he at least got some culture. You don't ask a child if he wants to learn math or brush his teeth. He's a child. You tell him"
Maxine Gilligan Maybe you shouldn't have judged in the first place! You don't know what is going on in others' life. This is all something that you 'think'. You NEVER know. Maybe you're right, maybe you're wrong. She could be watching anything on another algebra website, BESIDES, RU-vid. You need to consider other options. Perhaps she might be getting a tutor. Maybe it is just rare, maybe it is. It's not your life.
Maxine Gilligan Why don't you take common knowledge? You have NO CLUE what is going on in their life. They could be going to another website with possibly more info than RU-vid. I've done that more than once. Maybe this person is a genius, and overall, doesn't need that. Man, you just never know. Not everyone, everything, is the same.
This is very wrong, who in their right mind would be like "Hey, these kids like learning, let's demolish their self-esteem and make them feel dumb so that I can feel smarter than them" This whole "child genius" thing is ridiculously stupid and before anyone replies saying "you're just jealous that you're not smarter than them" lemme tell you something, I am well smarter than the average human, but I can see psychologically what will happen. These kids will already have it hard enough where they won't ever be able to have actual conversations with others the way you can. I've had this issue many a time before. Just leave them alone.
Agree. Many of my classmates consider me the second, if not the smartest student in class, yet I can have normal conversations and interact with people normally. Yes, sometimes I am very quiet and serious, but that’s because i don’t feel the need to talk.
+Mr. Discount yes, it does. While being Asian doesnt automatically mean you're good at math, it is true that GENERALLY, Asians tend to get better grades in math (and other subjects) than other races. I read a study about this.

+Owen Scattergood My results are actually quite poor! Are you saying I am NOT good at art?! I didn't pass a single subject let alone art and I am actually quite good at art, Owen. I think you are being ironic and sardonic! Unless you just think schools don't tend to grade people in art full stop! Does it not surprise you that my results are poor?! Do you know me?! Do I know you?! I have a high I.Q. anyway! Thanks for the reply!
+harrytøps Actually, I am not clever anyway! John von Neumann ( 1903 - 1957 ) Hungarian-American Pure and Applied Mathematician, Physicist, Computer Scientist, Inventor and Polymath. He really was clever!
