Another way to fight hunger is to see if it’s possible for families to take home economics classes. Where they can learn how to make food last longer. How to learn to make more than just one thing from one particular food item. I’m almost positive they would be interested in doing that. Prayers headed their way 🙏

Teaching someone to grow their own food is a good idea. But it's not always possible. Some can't afford to do even that.

Nancy Farkas There are a lot of produce you can grow in your window. Tomatoes, celery, lettuce and green onions. I know, because I do it. No, green onions will not feed your family, however, they can add flavor to cheap bulk foods like rice, beans, quiona, barley.

Where I live, breakfast is offered free in the public schools. Kids don't really eat them, they toss the items. Such waste.

how many calories do kids need a day
@lindsayschutz
@lindsayschutz 4 года назад
@spirals 73 that's way too low for a growing child. The calorie requirement for a growing child depends on metabolism, health, etc but I think it's actually about 2500 calories a day or less (2000 calories is just the ideal for weight maintenance and it's not a lot to adults used to bigger portions).

They're talking about nutritious food all the time, and the kids get fried chicken, mac and cheese, chocolate milk... Sure, there's an apple on their tray, but that doesn't compensate the unhealthy food.
@lindsayschutz
@lindsayschutz 4 года назад
They're kids - let them eat that "unhealthy" food! The fried chicken is most likely oven fried and reduced sodium and served with a salad or piece of fruit to balance it out. If that organization gets partial funding for their meal program through the USDA, they have to follow some pretty strict nutritional guidelines regarding sodium, calories from fat, how many fruits and vegetables are served in a meal, etc (the same standards that school lunches have to meet).

G'day, sisrael! I will never forget a sermon I heard preached back in the late 1960's by a visiting priest. He described the poor and hungry people who crouched in alleyways behind restaurants and waited for the trash to be tossed out, "the uneaten peas, the half-eaten hamburgers." Their eyes would grow big as saucers as they watched and waited to feed themselves on what others had wasted.
