Child missing for 2 years found alive inside secret compartment under stairs in NY home

Paislee Shultis, a child who was kidnapped two years ago at the age of four, was found alive in a makeshift room underneath a closed staircase that led to the basement of a home in the town of Saugerties in upstate New York, police said.
Police have long suspected her biological, non-custodial parents, Kimberly Cooper and Kirk Shultis Jr., of kidnapping the girl, but previous searches of their home in Saugerties came up empty.
Saugerties police Chief Joseph Sinagra told reporters one of the officers searching the home noticed something odd about the basement steps that made him take a closer look and found Paislee and Kimberly.
Paislee was taken to hospital, where doctors deemed her to be in good health before releasing her to be reunited with her legal guardian and older sister.
Both Cooper and Kirk Shultis Jr., along with his father Kirk Shultis Sr., now face charges in the case.

you do realize they only hid under the stairs when the police search the house right? It seems like the biological parents took good care of their kid while "kidnapped", but, they left out the reason why the older sister has custody for some reason, so, really hard to say how much of a "monster" they are.

Iam also a victim of child abuse. I was afraid of everything and everyone! This is normal. Because as a traumatized child/also grown human, we cannot make a difference between the others or good/bad, everything and everyone could be bad!

I think everyone needs to know the details here. They weren't keeping the child under the stairs, they would hide her when police showed up. It was both parents and a grandfather as well. Why did they lose custody? Was she sexually or physically abused? Were the parents addicts at some point? Who had custody? Total strangers or other family? Obviously parents don't lose their kids easily so I am not defending this by any means. I just would be curious to know if they are monsters or just desperate to get their child back? It could be neither or it could be both.

Story from what I've gathered: Parents lost custody over deficiency by a judge. Was just something they apparently could have fixed according to police offer interviewed. Grandmother gained custody of both kids, there's a teenager older sister. Parents went to little kid's school and picked her and whisked her off while lying to everyone. For 2 years, they hid her away in the house to point even neighbors never knew there was a kid in the house at all. Police tried repeatedly to find her in the house but legal red tape stop from going too far until this event where a partial search warrant of house was granted.

According to an ex babysitter that was interviewed. The maternal grandmother went for custody over concerns that the parents kept the kids with them at the construction sites they worked on late into the night. And addictions to drugs(meth and heroin) The father has some paraphernalia charges.

@@DM0317 so it was a custody case The child was safe with her mom Dad had actual custody Cops kept going in the home on good information that the child is in, but the Canadian police is “so competent” that it took them two years to actually find the child hiding under the stairs. Canada has the most incompetent police force among any of the first world nations. Look up the car of “the Harrison family Murders”, “Bruce McArthur”, “Robert Pickton”, and now this case.

I would like to know the reason why she was taken from her parents in the first place before passing judgement. Sadly child services (the people that take children from their parents) are not very trust worthy and they do not always do what is in the best intrest of the child. The system has turned out many, many messed up children due to neglect and abuse at the hands of foster homes. The officer said himself that she was in good shape and not harmed.

Me too. I really am starting to think they sell children. They try their hardest to make the biological parents at fault while barely checking on the foster homes. I've heard so many horror stories about the foster care system you would think they would do random checks like they do with the biological parents. It's so crazy to me

2:36 There is almost nothing that infuriates me more than when parents/guardians try to use law enforcement as threats to get their kids to act right. My oldest daughter's grandparents used to do s*** like that. Until one day, I heard her out loud and Very confidently Refer to a cop that walked by as a "pig". I was furious and knew exactly where it came from. I immediately called them and told them they better cut the s*** out. Because I work hard to teach my kids the police are there to help.

Wow, this is all too familar, i experienced a similiar scenario as a child. Same age, missing for the same amount of time. In no way did I feel like I was overly in danger, outside of poor parenting and addiction. But this triggered a memory of where I recall police knocking on the door of our apartment, maybe months after or a year (I didn't know I was even techincally kidnapped or missing), My mother stating that "punks" were at the door, as if there were theives outside the door and she was telling us to be quiet and hide. Hopefully this girl was in as good shape as they said and isn't in some traumatic state, or has to deal with it later in life, I know my siblings did,.

Instead of taking the kids from their biological parents; try to help the parents through rehabilitation to be better and keep families reunited together. If people accept giving child's custody to others rather than true parents, then all are likely to lose his/her kid for "endangerment" and "liability;" and these are vague terms and open to interpretation.

It was transfer of custody. Parents were deem unfit some they do something. Kids (they have a teenage daughter as well) custody was just transferred over to grandmother. Wasn't like the family was scattered to the four winds.

I hate when they do this bait and switch thing where they blare out "kidnapped" in the title, but when you watch the video, it turns out the child is taken by his or her *parents* who meant them no harm. There are circumstances when a child id taken by one or more parents in concerning circumstances (e.g. we've seen a couple of cases of estranged husbands taking the children and killing them to spite their estranged wives.) But in this case it seemed pretty clear that her parents ran off with her because they didn't want to give her up to CPS. So why not make the title "Girl whose parents took her into hiding found"?

Details of WHY this happened are irrelevant. No child should ever be forced to "hide" or "otherwise" in a situation like where she was found. This world is SO full of deviants and sickos and the law does not provide a suitable punishment for these vermin.

I can't imagine how her sister felt being reunited again and what this experience did to both of them emotionally. Hoping addressed over the coming years to help cope to avoid self destruction. Family cases aren't published unless criminal directed at children with prison. It's a shame the parents went this route over home studies to prove stability to regain custody of both children. Maybe that wasn't realistic with what happened to lose the custody. Glad she is safe and can hopefully regain trust with adults and rebuild her relationship with her sister.

OK, there is an article that says the girl's biological Grandmother was taking care of her, keeping her away from parents and the grandfather. She was abducted for 2 years, no schooling, no doctor visits, and probably no outside contact at all. Father was arrested for something, but they've declined divulging their custody case any further.

They lost custody and the kids (the one in this video and her older sister) were given to legal guardians. I don't know however why the parents lost custody... but there had to be something to endanger the child's health or well being, otherwise a court would not take custody away from parents.

@@Tim-is-short Not if it is a decent judge. And even if the judge is wrong, you have the option to appeal the case to the next higher court... but kidnapping should not be your go-to option unless all other options have been exhausted.

@@gigia741 CPS cant take away kids permanently. Only a court order can. So tell the parents to sue for guardianship... if there really is no just cause, the judge will order the kids back to the parents. But this mother should have known that kidnapping and making the kid hide in such a dark confined space is not going to make the judge or jury think she is a good parent - that should be obvious.
