the reason they tried to get the amulet in bride was because in the first 3 movies, the rule was that he could only transfer his soul to the first person who saw his new form, it changed in 3 because technically that boy from the school was the first to see him after he got re-made. the amulet pretty much allowed them to transfer themselves onto anyone or anything they want, which is what allowed charles to get into the good guy doll in the first place (idk if you addressed this in the vid im halfway through lol)
@@haileyshannon7548 yeah but that had nothing to do with the delay between Bride and Seed. Possibly why there was a big gap between CP3 and Bride though.
@@haileyshannon7548 No, they didn't watch CP3, the father of one of the kids apparently rented it at some point, but his kid never saw it. It's another "videogames cause violence" bullcrap.
I have to disagree. Andy being 6 leaves it pretty hard to believe that he could cause such carnage to adults with guns twice his size. Also, kids that just mindlessly kill isn't scary
@@doctorfeinstone6524 So it’s easier to believe that an inanimate object is killing people compared to a living, breathing child? Oh, and the stupid doll is not scary, so don’t give me that lazy excuse for an argument that children killing people isn’t scary if the doll is equally stupid. You can kick it for god sakes.
I think it would add to it. Both premises are very unbelievable, yet both seem impossible. Which one do you believe is capable of murder- an inanimate doll or a six year old child?
As a person who has watched way too many video essays and as a staunch defender of the Child's Play series I'd like to offer you compliments. Great work. Insightful and well crafted. Even the opinions that differ from my own were presented clear and fairly. Fantastic video. Subscribed.
Thanks man! That makes me relieved to hear that because I was a tad nervous making this one because of some of the negative things that I said, because I do love this series and I didn't want anyone to think that I didn't and I am glad that came across in its tone. Thank you so much, I really do appreciate it, and it makes me happy to know that.
Me to I subbed Chucky is the only horror icon I keep up with you could do so much with him but others it's so limited I can't stand how they get more money in the box office
Him screaming, and slamming the door was chilling. I don't think we ever see Chucky this deranged and furious since then. I'm sure Brad Dourif couldn't talk after voicing those scenes.
Thank you so much for watching, making this was a huge undertaking this past month but I wanted to make it because of the new film coming out. Let me know what other franchises you would like to see me cover in this fashion, and also if you like this longer style of video, thanks!
I love your channel, and I have subscribed. I would love to get discussions like this of the Scream movies, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Living Dead, and Saw. Maybe some J-horror, too? I was very excited about the Stepfather video, because it’s not something I’ve ever seen anyone give attention to before, though, so please feel free to draw attention to more obscure titles. I’m sure you’ll already think of doing Candyman, with the reboot coming out soon. I would be curious to get your take on Underwater or Doctor Sleep, too. Heck, Friday the Thirteenth is talked about more than is necessary, but if you do it, I’ll watch it!
Yes, even if they wanted to add the voodoo/charles element to the plot, it would've worked better if they'd followed mancini's original whodunnit structure, without the toy store scene being the very beginning; they could've just shown hints in the news, newspapers and side character conversations about a murderer killed in a toy store through out the film following andy's family, and then shown the toy store scene as a flashback/reveal at some point after andy's mother notices that the good guy doll has been moving without its batteries in (this battery scene was creepy even with the dumb toy store scene at the beginning ruining the mystery, imagine how excellent this scene felt in mancini's original script)
I’m a huge Chucky fan, and I love *Seed of Chucky* I think it’s a very enjoyable and fun movie. I still wish Curse and Cult where released theatrically. They are both so good
Hey man this is a great video, I'm only 10 minutes in but I know you're channel is going to take off if you keep making content this good. You've gained a new sub in me :)
Thanks! I plan on making a lot more, I’ve got two more of my shorter videos planned and then another long one hopefully at the end of the month. Glad you liked it, and thank you for subscribing!
@@InPraiseofShadows If you like Jennifer Tilly lampooning herself then you should also check out Kiss Me, Stupid. Dean Martin gives himself the same treatment. I'd also recommend My Name is Bruce, but I'm sure you saw it already.
I am a HUGE chuckie fan and honestly "Bride" and "Seed" are my most favorite in the entire fransize. So I guess I'm just not like other fans XD The pure lunacy of those movies is what makes them great for me. I commend you on a very good job well done on annalizing this franchise.
I was also pretty young and saw a part of child's play and not too long after my dad took me into a Spencer's and I saw a bunch of chucky dolls and it made me scared of dolls for a while
1. Karen didn’t go crazy. Karen backed up Andy’s story about the Chucky . But Norris and Santos denied the story. Karen was deemed crazy and locked away forcing Andy into foster care. 2. Sara didn’t kill herself. Chucky did.
I finally heard someone compliment Seed of Chucky in a fair yet critical way, so I stan. Also I am in strong agreement that the multiple Chucky dolls in Cult should have tied into the batch from the opening of 3, but I also find that scene so hilarious that i often forget about my grudge. Definitely subbed and on to the Halloween episode.
Joshua Mattel Maybe that could’ve been part of Andy’s mission; finding the other Chucky’s. That could have been set up earlier in the movie. Mancini, considering he went with the “voodoo for dummies” route, could’ve made some elongated curse-thing up. Like, according to an ancient voodoo rule, once you *blah blah blah*, it takes said amount of years for clones to be created. Idk. I would have to think about that... But still!
I know this video is old but I love the Child’s Play franchise so much I’m still gonna comment on it. This is for the 27 minute mark of the video. If Chucky gets more and more human every second he’s in the doll wouldn’t that mean his stitches would heal themselves. I think it would look so cool to see Chucky with white scars running along his face from all the stitches that got removed from his body
My favourite line in the franchise (maybe second favourite)is when the kid say she's scared and Chucky comes alive "You fucking should be". Brad Daurif's delivery of that line is sooooo perfect.
God your analysis are so good. They have the amazing quality of feeling much longer than they are while not being boring for a second. Super substantive.
I wish they’d had added the aging effect on chucky with the other movies like my did the first one. I was always so obsessed how he got more realistic every Turing day, really showing he’s becoming “human” in a way.
Childs play 2 was definitely a rock solid chucky movie, but none of them truly delivered that creep/chill factor like the original. The OG version just had that old school 80s moody and atmospheric vibe to it, and the music was so well done. The little sound effects every time there was a creepy moment happening were perfection for that movie. Just that whole segment when the baby sitters over, and all that creepy stuff is happening is legitimately chilling, and scary. How the camera pans in to chuckys face when he goes back on the couch to watch the news, when she put him back in his room was awesome. Just a classic thru and thru.
There are some moments in there that are really really great! It isn't my favorite out of the series, but it for sure is near the top. Probably third for me behind 2 and Curse but that is just personal opinion. But I do agree, I love the sequence with the baby sitter and it is probably the best part of the original I think. It is for sure one of the movies that does creepiness and scares best.
@@InPraiseofShadows Even that scene when Chucky's in bed with Andy, and he can see the shadow of his mother outside the door, so he plays the, "I'm your friend til the end" role, then the camera pans on his face is so damn creepy. Or when Andy's talking to Chucky, and the mom pops in the room to ask what he's doing, and Andy says, "she was a real bitch and deserved what she got", was so eerie, especially with the ambiant background music. And of course the battery dropping out of the box scene.
I dunno about anyone else, but I loved the newest Child's Play film. I was extremely uneasy about Brad not reprising the role but Mark Hammill was awesome, as was Aubrey Plaza. I also enjoyed the new take on the character and the story in general. It's always tricky when an old horror franchise is tinkered with and it's a relief when it turns out like this.
At our local video store when I was a kid, they had a bunch of horror VHS tapes in one section, and the one that always stood out so prominently was the Child's Play series. Scared the crap out of me as a kid, so much that I became scared of dolls, and I'm a girl so that was kind of a dilemma. Had nightmares about Chucky all the time even though I hadn't seen the movie. Just that cover art alone was enough to give me bad dreams for years.
They should make a Charles Les Ray Movie. Either a Chucky Escapes style where he gets out of the body and goes on,or a before he got in the body movie. Life of murder and vodoo
I was literally about to comment this, and then saw that I had already commented this a year ago..! 😂 CHARLES LEE RAY FOR LIFE BABY..! 📿 (I Couldn't Find Another Necklace Emoji, But That'll Act As The The Heart of Damballa, lol)
@@hughesyplays Bruhh..! I'm sure you already heard this, but they're actually making a Chucky TV series as a sequel to Cult Of Chucky..! I'm genuinely exited to see what they do next..! 😍
I think a lot of what made the First Child’s play movie so strong is that while the audience knows the answer, the characters don’t, so it adds a sort of tension, though removing the actual mystery portion.
My guess is that the amulet lets them transfer their souls into anybody, instead of only the first person they reveal themselves to. That's why he didn't need it in the first movies.
Dude those new animatronics looks straight terrifying. It very much hits on the uncanny valley for an automaton of gears and plastic to look as animated as a cartoon. Only a matter of time before that technology hits the consumer market and we start seeing anime figures with that level of complexity.
I thought they looked great and not uncanny at all. They look like the cartoon characters brought into the real world, but as 3D versions of their 2D cartoon selves that retain that cartoon style.
I both hate and am fascinated by these movies. There's something about the way the doll moves, his voice, just the wrongness of his face when it speaks. The worst thing for me is that he can pass for something innocent; something most wouldn't look at twice. The paranoia this creates is honestly the primary source of fear: not only can he just sit there until your guard is dropped, but he's small enough to fit almost anywhere making no location truly safe.
I enjoyed watching this and generally agreed. Although "Curse of Chucky" is also my favourite, I thought that you could have mentioned a few more of the plot holes there. One big hole is that the live-cam inside Chucky never gets turned off, and films him killing Ian. Nica could have used it to prove her case in the trial. Another is that it's hard to work out how Sarah called the police to Charles Lee Ray whilst being held hostage very tightly.
Oh wow I didn’t know that, I always try to learn as much as I can about these franchises before I make these but I always inevitably miss some stuff. It’s interesting to learn that that was a factor in that also, thanks for letting me know!
William's Animations & Art oh cool I’m glad that is the case, I couldn’t find anything from MGM that officially confirmed it so I didn’t want to say it in the video but I had hoped that that would be the case, because I think it would be kind of silly if they didn’t use the name, so I’m glad that’s the case. Thanks for letting me know!
@@wo3701 Eh, I like Bride, but I found his reasons for not being a huge fan understandable. Plus let's keep in mind that he enjoys all of these films, he's just explaining his favorites and least favorites.
Michael Myers was always supernatural; he was able to leap over of a vehicle and drive one, in spite of living his life in total isolation. And of course, he was able to shrug off bullets. They didn't go into depth about the source of his supernatural power, they left it unexplained and mysterious but he was definitely supernatural or at least, superhuman.
16:00 You might already know this by now, but in the previous movies Chucky could only transfer his soul into the first person he reveals himself to. The Heart of Damballa allows him to avoid this and transfer his soul into whomever, because he has been in his 2nd body for too long, and couldn't do it if he hunted down Tyler again.
I don't like it when people say that Nica shouldn't be able to walk when possessed by Chucky at the end of Cult, the reason being that it feels like selective criticism, people making this argument often decide to ignore the fact that the doll realistically shouldn't be able to walk or even move like it usually does on its own, but the voodoo magic (however poorly explained it is in any given film in the franchise) explains it away by telling us that the doll can move because Charles Lee Ray's soul is inside of it, following the same logic (and sorry if it sounds insensible it's not my intention) a person paralyzed from the neck down could be controlled by Chucky no problem because it's his soul inside the person, so Nica walking seemed not only reasonable, but logical in my opinion.
I love the beginning of bride of chucky but the second and third act are just unwatchable. The Human characters are unlikeable and the motive and plot doesn’t make much sense. I like the atmosphere and Jennifer Tilly’s performance and chemistry with brad dourif, though. Shame they couldn’t film flash backs of Charles lee ray and her.
I actually really appreciated that moment at 33:12 . While I personally don't mind having asylums in horror movies, and actually enjoy it if it's handled with respect and fresh eyes- as someone who has a serious mental illness and has a fair bit of experience with being involved with mental institutionalization, it was really nice to hear someone mention this problem that horror has seemed to have for a long time now. Thank you for that. Apart from that, though, this is an absolutely fantastic video! The essay style and breakdown emphasis you use in your structure is absolutely wicked, definitely going to check out more of your videos.
As a kid, I actually got the see Child's Play 2 in the movie theater with my aunt and her high school friends and you're right because it was REALLY fuckin scary. Chucky was just plain flat out menacing. Especially at the end when the spell doesn't work, my goodness he terrified me with how f*cking pissed off he was lol. It felt like I was having a conniption the entire time in that theater lol. Man I haven't relived that moment in a long ass time, that just proves you're doing amazing work in these videos!
Man... So many of your videos I've seen before but never put them all together and realized it was all you... Bruh, I am officially subscribed... You are such an amazing host..! 😍
6:30 The reason why she didn't come back was because of the director wanting to go in a different direction on the storyline that just didn't include her character. He felt they could be better than the original movie, and through his youth, was in competition with the original. And the original opening included her character being sent off to the criminally insane. 17:56 As to why it took 6 years to make Seed of Chucky, was because Don Mancini wrote the script in 1998 titled "Son of Chucky". But by then and to 2004, LGBT representation wasn't exactly at the forefront to mass audience or broadcast media. Universal originally rejected the script, and according to Jennifer Tilly, they gave a note to the script quote: "This is too gay." And it would be stuck in limbo for years. By 2001, Mancini wrote a back up script to please Universal titled “Chucky Goes Psycho" which had the couple resurrected and hide at the Bates Motel where they continue their murders until Tiffany is hit by a bunch of teens driving while taking out the trash. The remaining story was like I Know What You Did Last Summer with Chucky stalking the teens in a traditional teen slasher story. However by 2003, following the success of Cabin Fever, instead of destroying his original"Son" script and not jeopardizing the brand, Universal bounced the project around to different subsidiaries before dropping it to Rogue Pictures, who undertook it from Focus Pictures. (Basically, Universal was so horrified with the Seed of Chucky script that they tried dumping it theaters through a "Universal-Affilated" sub-studio. They needed TWO studios of separation from Seed of Chucky. Yikes.)
I can only imagine your dismay at seeing how much of a soulless husk of a movie the new one was. It was almost as if they were trying to make a cinematic universe with the garbage Poltergeist reboot.
I didn't see the remake/reboot of Child's Play. I was initially excited for it, but then when I saw how Chucky looked and how old Andy looked I couldn't help but feel like it... was going to try too many fitting together that just don't fit... Chucky himself looked like a toy that looked way too creepy to be purchased for a child of... any age really. Andy looks too old to be playing with him... the technology aspect could've worked in a lot of ways and, to it's credit, maybe it does, but I think my points stand on their own. The Poltergeist movie almost could've worked too but I think they failed to capture a lot of the heart and imagination of the original
This is amazing and I love how you went in-depth but as someone who's a big fan of Chucky, I think the whole "Voodoo for Dummies" is the best because Charles actually was taught by an actual Voodoo instructor and his name was Dr. Death, Charles was still in the learning phases and when he went to confront the doctor; the doctor soon realized his true evil and denied him any help when it came to dark magic. For this, he was murdered by Charles. I see the book as an homage to the fact that he can no longer access real and potentially harmful magic and that he will do anything and will use anything to get to his goal. Also, Don Mancini himself said that he rather not divulge in the world of voodoo. He was completely displeased with the idea even being added to his creation and even said that " it just opens up a whole new can of worms", that it would bring up way too many questions. I think it works, Charles was a rookie when it came to magic and the fact that he can just now use a book to create multiples of himself is quite great and I don't think it's reaching, we also have to remember that in the second one he only came back because the doll he originally inhabited got stuck by an electrical current. Not because of the blood that dripped into the bucket. Overall I think you did amazing !!
This is a fantastic video and I pretty much agree with every one of your points. I'm cautiously excited for what is to come. The only thing I differ on at all really is my love for Bride of Chucky which simply comes down to taste. I really love how that film feels like a celebration of 20th century horror with bits and pieces of classic horror, slashery stuff, and brand new (at the time) ideas. It just feels light hearted and fun to me and it's one of the only films from the late 90s early 2000's era that holds up for me in most respects. You mention that it takes itself too seriously, but I never really got that vibe, I felt all the characters felt particularly tongue in cheek, but I could be biased. That being said I really like Rob Zombie and the music in there so it isn't as dated to me personally, but I can very easily see how if you aren't a fan of the music it would come off as very dated haha. Also, I'm generally more a fan of shlocky feeling films too, which is where my love of this film, the first remake of Texas Chainsaw from 2003 and Rob Zombie's Halloween come from. That being said this video is great and I'm definitely going to rewatch from time to time. My only suggestion would be to ever so slightly turn the music down just a teensy tiny tad. It isn't too distracting or anything, but your voice gets drowned out a bit about 2/3rds into the video. It's not major, but I listened with pretty decent speakers and it got suprisingly loud. Other than that like I said before, excellent stuff man. I adore your content.
Thank you so much for the feedback! I know I’m kind of an outlier as well on Bride of Chucky because there are a ton of folks who really love that movie, and I can see why but it doesn’t do it for me personally for the most part, although there is some stuff in there that I really dig. I will fix the music in the future because I have heard that a couple of times now so I will tone it done in future vids. Thank you so much for watching, I know it was a long one and I was worried about turning folks off with the runtime but I like getting super in depth with stuff from time to time. Thank you for being so supportive, it always makes me feel happy and that the videos are worth it when I see people really digging them, so thank you for that!
@@InPraiseofShadows Absolutely! My favorite content on RU-vid is videos like yours that go in depth into the things you are passionate about. Length doesn't matter at all to me in fact longer videos are better because you get the say everything without condensing it down. I can't wait to see what else you have in store.
SpongebobMusicUnited good I’m glad it worked then! I tried to make it as digestible as possible by doing the chapters in there that would let people take breaks if they wanted which I think helps. I definitely want to get into doing more long form videos like this because I have fun with them so I might start doing one at the end of every month or so, and try and keep a more consistent upload schedule with them all. I’ve been trying to schedule myself lately to where I can get them made more frequently so I can do more than the usual 2 per month, so I would love to start doing these more now that I have done that.
As a huge Child’s Play/Chucky fan I really loved this video, very nice editing and overall graphic look and I find you’re points very interesting. Subscribed!!
The Child's Play links to the two murders mentioned were almost entirely media fabricated. Suzanne Capper's killers did make Child's Play references - but mainly, it was a song that was popular at the time, played to her on repeat. No aspect of the murder actually resembles Child's Play, and none of the killers ever implied it was an influence. The link to the murder of James Bulger is even more tenuous, as the only "evidence" is that Jon Venebles' father had rented the movie some weeks before the murder. There is no evidence that either of the boys (who were 10, not teenagers) ever watched the movie, neither boy ever mentions the movie, and the only "imitation" is weak at best (paint being thrown). In no way did Child's Play influence either of these crimes, and none of the perpetrators ever even mentioned the films.
Something that I noticed regarding the voodoo element in the first film is when Chucky confronts John and questions him about how to leave the doll. He tells John something along the lines of, "What do know, this voodoo actually worked". Maybe I'm taking him too literally but seems like the voodoo wouldn't work if Charles didn't fully believe in it with total commitment. Mancini did hate the voodoo element but I also think he misunderstood one part of it. He questioned if Chucky were able to create a voodoo doll of John (which he stabbed, killing him), why not create a voodoo doll for all of his enemies? But in the film, it is John's voodoo doll he created himself. He just made the mistake of telling Charles where he kept it.
Interesting how I've not once heard about Childs Play being cited as inspiration for murders but time and time again people still try to say video games cause violence. Even though there are far more violent films out there that show muuuuuch more graphic detail.
Yeah. The late 80s-early 90s was when parents were complaining about movies, tv shows and video games were getting violent. Do you remember when parents were complaining about The Simpsons and Ren and Stimpy?
Tbf, for one of those murders it wasn't the only reason (they were on drugs or something and had a prior altercation with the victim), and in the other, the two kids had never actually seen the film, it was all just rumours (it was because the perpertrators were two 10 year old children and people were blaming anything and everything on why they would act that way).
It a been days since I watched this and I'm still obsessed with your version of the franchise, where the blood mixing with plastic brought several chuckies to life. And through the events they experience they're personality changes somewhat, explaining the more comedic tones etc. It could've also made him less overpowered in cult, instead of just copying his soul to anything, he is awakening the dormant piece of his soul in various good guy dolls
I remember when I was younger, someone bought my little cousin a "My Buddy" doll. My aunt(his mother) was horrified and she threw it in the trash🤣😂🤣my little cousin was crying so hard.
I LOVE the guy who plays Phil and the fact that he doesn't initially believe Andy about Chucky . That point stands out because, in a movie the actor (Gerrit Graham) made, in 1974 a movie called Phantom of the Paradise. If you're familiar with it, then you know that poor Beef was forced into the middle of a grudge match between an evil record producer and the songwriter he scammed. After being assaulted in the shower and threatened, Beef tries to tell Swan's right-hand thug PHILBIN "There REALLY is a PHANTOM" only to be ushered back into the haunted theater. Skip to Child's Play 2. I loved the irony . As to the franchise, itself, I saw the first three movies. And then The Curse of Chucky. I heard that it was filmed partly in Winnipeg. (The house, at least).
I've admittedly never seen any of the Child's Play or Chucky movies. But I watched the TV show which started last year and loved it a lot. I've been meaning to watch the movies and probably finally will since it's spooky season once again.
Damn I just watched this and it made go “oooohh that makes sense now “ lol I watched these films as a little kid and I’m rewatching them all now cause I know there were jokes/ideas I didn’t get back then. Great video, it left me wanting another video where you just talk about chucky lmao
Chucky being reassembled after getting chopped to pieces with an axe in Seed was explained in a crossover with an awesome comic series called Hack/Slash.
Wow, as someone who has only seen clips of the Child's Play movies, this video was so interesting and informative! I think the tonal clash in these films is what has turned me off from them and hurt the franchise overall. They want to be both funny and scary, but it just comes off as cheesy and eye roll-inducing. From what I've seen, the movies work better when there is a serious element to them. I'm glad the new movie is getting rid of the voodoo magic though. The idea of a "smart" doll being hacked is much more terrifying (and believable).
I’m glad you liked it! Yeah there for sure is a ton of tonal differences in this series, even more than others at the time that also had the same issues. But yeah personally my favorites are the ones that try to make it scary and take it serious. I am excited for the movie, I think the trailer drops this week, I think it’s going to be pretty cool hopefully.
@@crod9905 Yeah, I liked it! I was kind of disappointed that we didn't get more. Like I either wanted a look at Chucky move, or to hear a bit of his voice, but to give either was a waste because that is what people were watching the trailer for. So I am really hyped for it, I think it is going to be a really solid entry into the franchise, but I did want more out of the trailer personally which normally isn't the case for me. I think it looks like it was shot well, and they are so far doing a good job making it their own and distancing it from the original. So so far it is definitely up there with the horror media that I am most looking forward to this year for sure. What did you think??
this is one of the best things i've watched ever! the way you organized, went through and edited the video, everything just fits perfectly. as a video creator (and a fan of Chucky as well) i couldn't help but watch the whole thing thinking "wow, i wanna make content like this someday!", thank you for inspiring me, and please keep the good work! loved the channel
1 more thing, Child's Play 2019 was actually really good. I enjoyed it more than the last 2 Chucky films, Mark Hamill did a fantastic job as Chucky, I was there to a sold out opening friday night show. Alot of scenes had the audience laughing and jumping, it was literally the most fun I had being scared. Hopefully the new series is just as good as Ash vs. Evil Dead or Creepshow.
I've seen all the Chucky movies I've been a hardcore fan since the first film and all together as a film franchise theres things I love and I hate about all the film's but chucky is so iconic and has been a part of my life as well as many other Chucky fans live's & the love I have for Chucky as a horror villian I just take the good with the bad when it comes to all the Chucky movies as film franchise.
I saw something the other day that explains the amulet is needed bc of the time limit. He starts turning human after like 2 days and then he would b stuck, plus with the amulet he can transfer into ppl besides the first person he told his secret to
