Oh my goddd I just watched that a few weeks ago, it was about this girl who found an evil sponge that thrived off of people’s misfortune, and this other kid found out what it is in a book about evil entities and said “you’re lucky you didn’t find a ___! It’s a vampire potato” or something like that, I forgot the creatures name. And at the end they found out how to contain the evil sponge but at the end their pup brought home the vampire potato

Since you brought up WordGirl, here's some moments that got to me that absolutely scared my child brain. -the scene in the episode about the things where mr. big has huggy enthralled and is about to use a ray on WG only for WG to use the enthrallment of her sidekick against mr. big -the few times where she was "banned" or "run out of town" -the one where she accidentally exposes her powers in front of her family and the villain who stayed for dinner -the kryptonite episode -invasion of the bunny lovers, specifically the scene where she's stuck between a rock and a hard place whether it be being mind controlled or forced to expose her identity to scoops -the miss power special -the episode about the Coach and somehow involving mind control in it i really love this show to bits

I used to have a strange liking to one character in said show (that was one of the child antagonists.) cause my friend when we were young brought this character to me and now I have a satisfaction with a thing that character does in every episode. Take a guess at who that is.

Seeing that Cliffhanger segment really dug up a repressed memory LOL, I don't think I even remember Between the Lions at all except for that segment, so I was surprised that it was part of it. I think one of the things that really really disturbed me as a kid was Courage the Cowardly dog. Like seriously, I was so perturbed and freaked out whenever it came on, everything was just so dark and creepy. But the ONE episode that really affected me the most was one where the grandpa walked outside the house, and then turned into dust. Watching that happen and the dust flying away just made me so sick to my stomach and disturbed me so bad. I think this was when I was just starting to understand the concept of death, and it terrified me. Also those weird trippy segments in some of those Winnie the Pooh episodes, iykwim. Also in the game MySims, I was really scared of the guy that owned the museum, and I was TERRIFIED by the music that plays when you walk by the museum, so I'd always run past it as fast I could. Edit: If you know the game Viva Pinata, I was really freaked out by Dastardos as a kid. I freaking hated him. Nowadays though, I find him to be an interesting and tragic character and find his design cool and endearing in a weird twisted way rather than terrifying.

that one scene in sesame street where the giant meatball completely destroys the place still terrifies me as a grown adult. i played all those insanely realistic pet vet games so I never got spooked by much, but damn when that "medical emergency" button came on I nearly cried because I knew I was slow but didn't want to lose points lmao There was this one game called "Jr. Pet Vet" where it looked like one of those edu-tainment games from the early 90s, but it was locked behind a paywall after like 3-4 cases. The thing that terrified me was that the very last one was a cat with damn RABIES out of all things, but in order to take care of him and essentially "complete the case" it you had to buy the full version. What a damn cliffhanger.

Okay so speaking of the meatball song, they did it on an episode of Sesame Street once when me and my sister were still little. Pretty sure Snuffleupagus was singing it. I was never really phased by that clip, but something about it seemed to terrify my sister. Must’ve thought the meatball was uncanny. It’s gotten to the point where she’ll bring it up anytime we happen to be eating meatballs.

I remember I was terrified of the THX logo, but not the one everyone talks about. It was the one where the logo breaks down and a robot man repairs the logo. For some reason, the broken THX logo and the "realistic setting" rather than just being a TV logo really scared me. I remember one time my family was on a road trip and we put in the cars DVD (which had it) and since this was in the car, my brother and I wore headphones that played the movie audio so when the logo started, I basically threw off my headphones, looked away from the screen, and cried. I was a weird kid.

I like seeing you make videos on things that are not MLP. Something that really scared me when I was really young (4 or 5) was a Teen Titans episode. It was a moment from “How long is forever”. Starfire gets transported to the distant future. Because of that event, the other Titans separate and live lonely lives. The part that creeped out kid me is when Starfire met future Raven. The room that Raven is in is completely white and Raven is not looking at Starfire. Raven has gotten so depressed that she thinks the other Titans never existed. I remember Raven being angrier in that scene, but it turns kid me was freaked out and really sad during that scene.

One of my most frightening *media* memories as a child is the scene in Dumbo when his mother rampages. It scared me so much that I started crying and screaming and my mum had to turn it off, though I remember watching the ending, so maybe she just skipped through a portion of the movie, as I don’t remember other later scenes, or I left the room. Ironically, Watership Down was one of my favourites as a little kid - in fact, I drew fanart inspired by the prologue with Frith and El-ahrairah as a four-year-old using some cheap paints - but I could never watch Dumbo again. Update: I never had a Wii as a kid, but my friend did, and we would often play Wii Fit whenever I went over for the day or for a sleepover, or just mess around in the Mii creator for hours following tutorials on RU-vid. We also found Lotus Focus pretty creepy, but less for the sudden shout of “CUT!” (we actually found it pretty funny) and more for the ambient noises, such as the footsteps, and what I think is a bike chain? that one in particular always scared me because I couldn’t quite tell what it was supposed to be. On top of this, we always played it with our eyes shut, so you can imagine that it made all these strange noises even more unsettling.

I used to be scared of the 20th Century Fox (now known as 20th Century Studios) logo cuz it was too loud (I'm autistic and I kinda don't like loud noises). I also used to be scared of live-action movies (with the exceptions of the Scooby-Doo quadrilogy, Night at the Museum 1 and 3 (I thought the third film was the second movie before I found out about Battle of the Smithsonian), Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever, and pretty much every bad direct-to- video animal movie) because I thought live-action movies were "adult".

I remember being scared of funko pops when I was younger. They just looked so soulless, and seeing a bunch next to each other in a hot topic freaked me out. I never said anything to my dad though, because we usually went there for business reasons (my dad sold magic the gathering cards, and he couldn't leave me home alone) and I didn't want to interrupt what he was doing just because I was scared. It's honestly part of the reason why I've never liked funko pops.

When I was little, I used to be scared SHITLESS of the porky statue & porky himself in brawl. Just the way the statue slowly moved towards Lucas and destroyed literally everything in its path, the way the spider mech bed looked, and all while his highness's theme blasted through both of those, absolutely terrified me and caused me to have a panic attack All of this is kind of ironic in retrospect because porky is like my favorite character ever

When I was super young, like, before kindergarten age- I used to be obsessed with the "labyrinth" movie, the one with David bowie as the goblin king- expect, near the beginning, there was this scene where the main character was talking to her baby brother, who she despises and sees as a burden. She begins the scene by talking into a mirror, and the scene cuts to this group of little goblin puppets talking and hoping that she would send her brother to the goblin king. The scene continues with the girl talking and cutting back to the lil goblins talking. the thing is- I was terrified of this scene because of the constant cuts to the goblins, because they were looking directly at the screen, so they're technically fully facing the viewer. I thought the puppets in this scene looked particularly creepy, their voices freaked me out, and I was convinced that they were watching me- and every time the scene would start cutting to show the goblins behind the mirror, I would hide behind the couch in fear, and constantly peak out to see when the scene was over, so I could come back to watching it in front of the TV-

I have a very specific memory of watching this movie for the first time and being scared of it. Netflix streaming was new at the time, and this was one of their first films on the service. My friend invited me over and her dad put on Labyrinth for us. During this scene you described, we both got really creeped out and that jump scare of Toby not being in his crib was pretty freaky. Then when the “Chilly Down” scene came up, we both couldn’t take it anymore and turned it off lol. 😂 Love this movie so much now though!

WARNING: THIS COMMENT IS VERY LONG!!! Since this is part one and shunks is talking about when she was REAL little in this, i feel it's safe for me to start with my earlier "childhood trauma" and get into the stuff from when i was older as the episodes go on (i put childhood trauma in quotations since i do have actual trauma unrelated to the things i'm about to talk about and i kinda want to distance the things that scared me as a kid from that) So basically when i was around 3 all the way up to around age 9, my mom would put on old cartoon DVDs for me before bed (specifically looney tunes and tom and jerry) and ngl there quite a LOT of things that scared me in them. First of all: the FBI warning screen that would show up when all the episodes were over really creeped me out, like...imagine being a little kid, you can't even really read and you're watching some fun cartoons with silly animals in them when all of a sudden the episode ends, everything goes completely quiet and you're greeted by some kind of cryptic message talking about something you don't even know exists! I remember there being one episode of looney tunes where elmer fudd tries to hypnotize bugs bunny so he can capture him; for the most part i wasn't scared of the episode but there was this scene where bugs hypnotizes elmer back and he ends up acting like bugs, when he does that there's a visual gag where elmer briefly looks directly at the screen, his ears stretched out to look like a bunny's ears and he had buck teeth before his face goes back to normal. That face scared the HELL out of me as a kid and i'm lowkey shaking just WRITING about it now! I remember whenever that episode came on on the DVD i had i would always tell my mom to skip it for me. There was another episode of looney tunes that scared me where bugs bunny goes to an island and he finds a group of gorillas, he ends up getting taken by a female gorilla who thinks he's her baby. Now just like with the hypnotism episode i wasn't scared of the episode for the most part but the song that played when the gorillas were introduced scared the hell out of me, it was basically two repeating low-pitched notes of a drum (if i recall correctly) playing over and over as the camera panned to a still image of the gorillas. The song was used in other looney tunes shorts but the gorilla episode is the only instance of it i remember, it scared me so bad that one night i had a nightmare where i was watching spongebob when suddenly sandy got angry and turned into a weird sunflower creature as that song played (there wasn't even a transformation sequence, the sunflower form just slowly faded in as the song played) Now obviously this next one is kind of a given considering i was a tom and jerry kid, i was scared of that one gag where tom looks at the camera and says "DON'T YOU BELIEVE IT?" I even had a nightmare once where THAT version of tom was chasing me. Though that's not really that interesting to talk about; while i did grow up with the older stuff, i also watched the newer reboots of T&J up to the one with the lineless art style. This is important because that one episode of tom and jerry tales where tom gets bit by a werewolf scared the SHIT outta me, epsecially the scene where tom actually turns INTO the werecat. I was scared of werewolves for a good few years after that (weirdly enough i wasn't scared of the spongebob episode "i was a teenage gary" as a kid even though it had a similar scene in it) i eventually got over my fear of that episo though Anyways, there's a bit more to talk about but that's the only ones i feel like talking about for right now at least. Thanks for reading TLDR: the FBI warning screens at the end of DVDs, the looney tunes hypnotism and gorilla episodes, that one infamous scene from tom and jerry and the T&J tales werewolf episode were vewy scawwy to baby me :(((

That whole “trauma stuff in slice of life kids show” thing reminded me of something (this might be a bit of a weird story). When I was like 4 or 5 I (for better or worse) was online and found a clip from a 90s Barney VHS, it was from a clip show release and the clip they showed was Barney slipping on a toy truck, I shut the monitor off and actually started crying. For years I wondered why that got to me in the first place until that point you brought up, maybe it was also because it was so sudden? Like I said it’s a bit weird

This is embarrasing but...I used to be scared of Shrek when I was 4/5. At first I wasn't scared of him (I even had a lunchbox), buuuut my fear started in Shrek 3 on that scene where Shrek had this nightmare about parenthood. My dad noticed that, and everytime I misbehave he told me that Shrek is coming for me and he's going to eat me. Fortunately that fear went away when I watched Shrek 2 on TV when I was 8

There was an episode of Camp Lazlo that used to freak me out as a kid, it was called "Meatman". The premise was that a sentient pile of meat reigned terror on the camp after Lazlo called it stupid, and what scared me the most was that the meat was actually eating people. Not only that but the meatman in question looked super unsettling to me. I know that it was basically one of those Halloween-themed episodes, so it was supposed to be intentionally spooky, but even still. lol Looking back at it, it's just a really goofy episode. XD

Not liking seeing people cry is nothing to be ashamed of. When I was little, I had a SpongeBob SquarePants video game where you had to find Gary the snail, and in one of the mini games you had to pick a random hiding spot to find him, and if you find the wrong animal SpongeBob would say THATS NOT GARY! and start crying, for some reason I HATED That, and I would cover my ears when those scenes came up.

adding my own piece to everyone elses list of childhood spooky memories here :> - the “measuring” voice thing from wii fit plus, used during body tests. i only played minigames when i was little because i hated it so much lmao - this one pop up from early girlsgogames that was like for a premium thing or something? i honestly can’t remember what it was for but it featured the blonde character and took up the whole screen. it usually happened suddenly so when it came up i would run to the kitchen and hide (our computer was in the dining room corner at the time) until my parents closed it. - the fight scene from bambi, i think it was like him or his dad fighting another deer or something its been too long for me to remember it exactly but bambi was my favorite movie so i endured during my day-long bambi marathons at my grandmas house lol - giant fake spider halloween decorations. to this day i hate them. never take me to six flags fright fest or any house decorated with the fake spiders i will cry /hj i’m just deeply unsettled by them - we went to disney world when i was like 9-10ish, and we were in animal kingdom watching the bugs life show thing and theres a part where fake black widow spiders descend from the ceiling and i sobbed and clung to my dads arm (probably still would today tbh) - the tightrope, lotus focus, table tilt, and that one mole game from wii fit spooked me too - i had a ds game when i was little that was an educational animal game, and you would collect animals for each habitat. sometimes an animal would move to the wrong habitat and you’d get an “animal alert” and then try to find them. little me hated the animal alert idk why. thats all i got for now, baby me was very easily scared, which is ironic considering how much i love horror, liminal spaces, and arg content now lmao.

I have a similar thing with Wizards of Waverly Place. This was in the Halloween episode where the Russos tried to be the scary but Alex hired some creatures, but one singled out out of all of them. It was the boogeyman. He did several attempts to scare the children, when he finally managed to do so, his face expanded and did a wild take with a snake tongue. Funny you mention Pixar stuff being scary. The pixar short with all the birds on the telephone poles has a bird caw at the end of the short (either right at the end or during the credits) and for some reason that random ass bird sound just made me so unnerved as a kid. Similarly there was a short about an alien trying to abduct a guy and failing horribly at it. And at the end the guy leaves his house but falls into a huge crater cause the alien only managed to steal EVERYTHING around the house. And for some reason the dude falling into the crater was just really creepy to me? What I'm getting at here is what's up with Pixar shorts being weirdly creepy to little kids despite not being creepy at all

I had this weird thing as a kid where if I heard a certain sound effect in a show, I only associate it with that specific show. It didn’t bug me too much when I heard the music in SpongeBob be played in Ren and Stimpy. Yet when I heard it playing in “A Christmas Story”, it somewhat unnerved me. It doesn’t bother me now, thankfully. On the other hand, baby crying sound effects are a whole different story. The crying sound they use for Kate in Arthur used to make me laugh as a kid. Yet it wasn’t until I was about 13 that I heard it played in Caillou(my sister and I were watching it for nostalgic reasons at that time). All I could think was “Wait… that’s not supposed to be there”. It caught me so off guard that I became afraid of the sound effect. I still am to this day. Another instance when I was about twelve was with another baby cry sound effect. This one was also used in Arthur but only the episode Arthur’s Baby. It was late at night, my family was staying in a hotel, and I was watching Family Guy since there was no Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network was done for the day. Family Guy already scared me plenty of times, so you won’t believe how upset I got when I heard that baby cry in an episode. Peter and Brian pranked a bunch of pregnant women into giving birth, which led to several baby crying sounds. Yet the one used in Arthur’s baby was what upset me the most. I never heard that sound in any other shows before, so I assumed it was only from Arthur. Hearing it in Family Guy, a show that already made me a bit uncomfortable, ruined a part of me. So that specific sound effect really scares me. Even worse than the other one. It’s so bad that even now as a 22 year old, I started bawling when I heard it Ghost Busters 2, last year. I was hyperventilating and plugging my ears so tight. I had to leave the room because I was that terrified. My sister ended up yelling at me, so that didn’t help. I’m just glad she hated that movie, otherwise she’d definitely watch it every year and not give a shit if I’m scared or not.

This wasn't so much a trauma thing, but when I was little, I used to get upset when the characters on Arthur would make bad decisions. Not even major stuff, just things like keeping a secret they shouldn't or cheating on a test. I think it was because they played a certain music sting whenever that would happen, so it clued me into something bad happening later. Luckily, I got over it when I was older and could just enjoy the episodes.

Back then in elementary I think the first biggest thing that scared me was the first Regular Show Terrors in the Park special specifically the Wizard segment where the Wizard killed the main cast in very disturbing ways. Muscle Man gets skinned, Skips gets burned to death in a chimney, Benson gets flushed and his gumballs come out the toilet, and Mordecai gets decapitated by the head. I think another thing that brought a lot of tension is that the gang was using realistic weapons like shotguns and crossbows instead of random fantasy weapons in the typical Regular Show format. That crap was waaaay too much for me, but today I’ve seen a lot of extreme stuff that the shock fatigue kind of takes over

The other one that scared me was the time when my brothers and I got into video games and we would play either Lego Marvel Super Heroes or Disney Infinity. My younger brother played this one level in the Lego Marvel game involving Venom. In that game, there was this cutscene where you would see Venom stalking around as lights flickered until you suddenly, outta nowhere, Venom jumpscares the crap outta me. I don't remember much from when I was four/five years old. So, most of the things that scared me as a kid where from when I was six onward. I distinctly remember freaking out when watching Disney's 'Basil the Great Mouse Detective', during the climax on Big Ben. The moment when Ratigan goes feral always made me dash to my bedroom, it was that intense for me. Similar story with Mickey's Christmas Carol, when Pete (as the Ghost of Christmas Future) reveals his face and shoves Scrooge into his own grave; for a six-year-old that was still understanding the concept of death at the time, it was a lot for me to handle. Ironically, I don't remember being scared of movies like 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' or 'The Black Cauldron'. Granted, while I did find them unnerving at times (like when the Horned King dies), I was more intrigued than frightened. However, I do remember watching this short film that was on the DVD for 'Nightmare before Christmas', I think it was called 'Frankenweenie' but unlike the animated film, this was in live action. The moment when the dog is chasing the ball and gets hit by a car, the boy crying out 'Nooooooo!' as the camera cuts to the ball rolling away, followed by the burial of said dog; it made me pause as I was trying to internalize what was happening. Again, like Christmas Carol, I was still trying to understand death at that age, so seeing that filled me with dread that made it difficult for me to talk about until now, as an adult. Can't wait for part two, Shunks!

MANY of the fantasy sequences in Curious George were not fun for child-me's anxiety, and still aren't. The ultimate "childhood trauma" from PBS for me though was guy I called "the fast man" from Sesame Street. It's actually a segment called "Counting with Milo" or something. But I used to call it "the fast man" because the segment would begin with a "cadunk" noise and an empty shot of a lake. Then, a guy in a white suit holding a number would speed towards the camera over the lake in stop-motion (without moving his arms or legs) and some kids would read the number. Then they'd do that in numerous locations multiple times. It absolutely screwed me up and terrified the crap out of me to the point of which I had nightmares. I would wait in terror through Sesame Street segments just in case I had to run out of the room when I saw the lake. Since then, I'm kinda at peace with it! But for the longest time, it was the worst thing ever.
