Happy early father's day, everyone! I hope you all enjoy this TNG content because I recently finished the series and can I just say right now how much I love Data. This video was a nightmare to edit but I'm proud of it. I hope it brings wholesomeness to your lives.
More TNG and Data content coming soon! :D
Content from the the following Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes:
S2E15: Pen Pals

The thing I probably love most of all is that Data always treated the children with respect and paid attention to them and their needs, whatever those needs were. In many ways, he's a much better parental figure than a lot of humans are.

@@Elly3981 Yeah except Data has no emotions. Not because he surpresses them like Vulcans but because their not part of his design and inspite of that he's still one of the most attentative and caring characters on the show. Just look at his pet cat Spot. He created dozens food options for her, he puts her in the care of another crew member when thinks there's a risk he might unknowingly harm her and when he finally gets emotions in generations he weeps tears of joy when he discovers Spot survived the Enterprise D saucer section crash. Just because someone doesn't have emotions doesn't mean they can't express love and care in their own way.

His speech to the Admiral who wanted to take her was beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. The way he fought for her to live as she was dying. Data wanted her to learn everything about the world. @@Elly3981 I agree to a point. Some of it was programming, but I think most of it was just who he was personality wise. You can see other instances where he gets frustrated or annoyed, along with happy or pleased. There are even times when he gets outright mad, such as when he was commanding the ship and his XO kept fighting and insulting his knowledge and expertise. I believe those instances were genuine. He says himself many times that he chose to believe like a human that he could evolve, and his father said it as well. I think this personality was really him.

I quite liked that episode but it was brought down by one thing, the actions of Vice Admiral Haftel...Even when he tried to help data save Lal, not ONCE did he acknowledge that it was his insistence that she leave the only environment she knew to be studied at a starbase and what amounted to abuse of his rank that caused Lal to "die" even though he had kids of his own and knew what he was doing wasn't right...Must have been the cybernetisist in him overriding everything "Oh a brand new Soong-type Android! Gotta get that to a starbase to study and damn the consequences!" and all he has to say when they failed to save Lal was "It wasn't meant to be" as if to say "Not my fault that this happened"
@moniquebaldea9299

@@Elly3981I COMPLETELY agree! I believe that is why he had so dang much problem with the emotion chip. He already had emotions. It was like he was just neurodivergent…his brain just was on a different wavelength so he didn’t “get it” like other people did so he thought that he wasn’t them. There are things he missed like intense touch and tasting food, but he was definitely one with emotion.

@@moniquebaldea9299 I think that Data's emotion chip didn't actually give him emotions, it allowed him to identify, feel, and express them more intensely. @@AirlocksandAviaries We used to watch _Star Trek: The Next Generation_ as each episode was released in dorm lobbies at college. This predated the Internet. Even back then, my friend and I (already Trekkies) believed Data had emotions. The emotion chip helped him feel emotions more deeply, as humans do, but Data already had emotional capacity. The real failure in his programming was his inability to realize that. We fondly described him as "clueless." His ethics and morals were impeccable. I don't think he could be such a good person without empathy. My friend and I were huge Trekkies in high school. We remembered every single TOS episode from memory and made a list. We practically had the episodes memorized and we tore through _Star Trek_ novels. I miss my friend. There was some...unpleasantness...in college that derailed our friendship. I dream about her often, but I wouldn't even know where to begin if I talked to her. There's way too much water under the bridge after 35ish years. I'm sure we're very different from one another by now.

It just gave him the ability to feel more human, but he does have his own way of feeling that he doesn't realize he has. I just love his character. Also, I'm really sorry about your friend. I'm still in college, but I know what it's like to grow apart from a friend and miss the person they were when you knew them, it's pretty hard. I hope things work out. Agreed. Always thought the same. He has emotions, just android emotions very unique to him, not in the way humans and humanoids express them. He may have been told he doesn't have emotions and came to believe that. But clearly he had some level of emotion which is shown in his choices. That personality wasn't just superior programming.

I think both Data and Lore have emotions but Data can't feel or express them as intensely as his brother. don't forget that riker started out very reluctant to have data on board. he was uncomfortable for whatever reason, and he's the first officer! sensitivity training can only do so much in star trek apparently and, to be honest, i quite like that decision. it creates conflict that is given a chance to be solved - that's the whole point of stories. (not to throw riker under the bus when the focus is on o'brien, but will also made that "joke" about a blind man teaching an android to paint. like, cmon man. you gotta hear this shit coming outta ur mouth at some point. but again - conflict and tension [plus some classic 90's grey comedy])

It's so funny, because almost every Data-specific video I've seen, the debate of "does he/doesn't he" have emotions is raging. My take: he doesn't have emotions except three: curiosity, perplexion and fascination. He states these outright. In addition, he was given programs to regulate morality, modesty and lastly, a single drive: to strive to be more human. This gives him purpose in life, and a goal to achieve that replaces his need for emotions. For every bit of evidence of him having emotions, there's always significant moments where he clearly doesn't. No fear, no liking nor disliking anything, always calm, always logical. There's an empath onboard the Enterprise who can confirm he doesn't feel. HOWEVER, he is intelligent, self-aware, has curiosity, and has motivations. This gives him a grand understanding of the universe and people, that offers him purpose. He understands people treating him well, who will offer benefits to his goal of understanding humanity. He has a desire to socialize because this enables his curiosity and purpose, and has an instinct to procreate, because sentient beings have this drive; he understands Lal dying as a loss to humanity and himself personally. He also understands people mistreating him or trying to exploit him, and knows these things are wrong. That being said, I also believe Data has always been designed to have emotions. It's illogical to think a little chip can create emotions when emotions are a full-body experience--he'd have to be pre-designed to do this. I think of the emotion chip as an activation chip that turned on all those dormant programs and subroutines across his entire being, and regulates them. After all, Lore and Data are "virtually identical" according to Dr. Soong. Lore never had an emotion chip (until he stole Data's) and Data's chip wasn't designed for his needs. it just made him more insane. I think, eventually, Data would have evolved to have emotions, but given his own creator made this chip, just like Dr. Soong made him from scratch, I have no issue with this "cheat."

I dream of Data often. I dream of him saving me from the Borg's and carrying me to sick bay and dream of him marrying me. We would make quite the couple. I love you Data my dearest. I dream of us doing a lot.

@@dargelxd The point is to ruin the scenes? Why?
@dargelxd
@dargelxd Год назад
@@somebodyfixmyinternet the point of an edit is to make some kind of commentary (typically visual) over the initial source material. Most commonly is to make a humorous or relatable effect over the scene. They're not "ruining the scene" they are simply adding their own personal effect or "flair" on the scene. If it's not your "cup of tea," fine. Everyone has their own tastes and opinions. There's no point to comment on something like this that you personally don't like it. If you don't like it, it wasn't made for you in mind. It would be much easier to just move on and just realize that you personally don't like it, and go watch something else.

I was as young as the kids in these clips when TNG came out and looking back now, I remember how handsome Brent Spiner was. He also had the nicest hands I've ever seen on a guy, so smooth, perfect, and beautiful.
