Children Are Citizens (CAC) is a professional development and curriculum project focused on engaging our youngest citizens with Washington, DC. Coordinated by early childhood researchers at Project Zero--a research center at Harvard's Graduate School of Education--and Washington International School, the project brings together early childhood educators, preschool children and their families from across the city. CAC is guided by a central question: What happens in a community when children are seen as current, not future, citizens? We firmly believe that recognition of the rights of young children to participate in the civic discourse of their city nurtures the relationship with their surroundings and supports the development of key 21st century competencies such as critical and creative thinking, collaboration and communication.
