Alexi was classically trained first and foremost (many metal guitarists are) RIP Alexi 😢 Scream/growl compliments the music. Singing in note over the top of death metal would sound ridiculous. I guess you either get it or you don't. It's real hard to explain. It's so passionate and emotional

Yeah, 👏🏻 👏🏻 I love this piece and these two did bloody well. As for the growls - I’m in the same boat. I’m slowly finding bands where they use it for effect rather than the full song, or ‘just because’. The band Swallow the Sun seems to be a good example of using that vocal style only occasionally (though I haven’t gone through all their stuff yet).
@wardeni4806

Alexi also changed his vocal style after the third album to be less rough and more like something you'd hear in Pantera. If you don't like the overdone raw vocals, I'd recommend songs like "Thrashed, Lost And Strungout" or "Platitudes And Barren Words"

Hi guys, love your channel. You go forward pretty fast, heartwarming to see you developing an ear for the more extreme genres, growling etc. :-D So I guess it is time to fill some gaps, I missed so many big names and niches and influential bands that changed metal forever, so I will make a list of stuff that I am sure you find very interesting. (I hope I did not overlook a song that was already reacted to, but hey, might happen, you react to so much music, adorable.) Btw, I especially appreciate Kel's reactions, because she has this analytical ear and the excited curiosity of a serious musician who has been kept away from these genres for way too long and discovers a new world. It is intense to see this, beeing a 51 yrs old Death Metal musician from Germany near the danish border myslf in a band of guys who all could be my children, agewise. (I am learning something new in the endless field of heavy music all the time ... and you might know, Germany and Scandinavia is serious metal territory ... ;-) ) I started as a choir singer myself and quit school choir to play in my first serious heavy rock band in the age of 17 ... such a long way, so much good music along the decades ... and in the beginning I never thought of beeing involved in such hard and heavy music - but hey, this is where music pushes the borders and I guess this is, what all art is about ... Now to my requests/recommendations. I try to make use of the hashtags, hope I do it right... #Aphrodites Child The Four Horsemen (1970) Although this is not metal, it is exceptional music from exceptional musicians from Greece that has had quite an impact on early prog and heavy rock musicians. The two main musicians are also very important in other genres later on, Demis Roussos made a european career in folcloristic popular music, while Vangelis Papathanassiou became an Oscar-awarded composer who produced many timeless movie scores (Chariots of Fire, Blade Runner, 1492 ....) under his forename (well, you can guess it, his last name is not that easy to remember...) #Anthrax Time Not only is the 5th album "persistence of time" the best one they ever made (IMHO), but Anthrax were one of those pioneers of thrash metal that just leave a smile on your face, because they are not only serious musicians with a lot of humor, they have quite good lyrics and concepts too. And even the official video for the (title) song (of the album) can be highly recommended, It does not distract from the music at all and shows, what the band is all about - musicians playing energetic music and having a concept and their very own style with a huge impact on anything thereafter in metal. #Bathory Twilights of the Gods (lyrics video) This is something very special and important. Quorthon, writer, singer and guitarist of this band project, created a whole new genre for metal after he came from the satanistic black metal roots to nordic mythology - viking metal. He dived deeply into the world of viking philosophy, religion and history and created a style, that has a slow tribal uniqueness, you can feel the cold breeze, smell the horses, see the mountains and fjords and feel the pain of the hard life in early medieval viking life in his music. It is very intense - and as conceptual als metal can be. The song is 14 min. long and epic as so much of Quorthons music. He died very young, unfortunately, but had many fans that made him a metal legend until today, his influence on metal musicians was huge, despite the fact, that it was a niche genre in the beginning. #Malsain Kvele Seg (see the (only) official video of this band - the lyrics would not help you anyway, if you are not familiar with scandinavian languages ... it's about torturing yourself, swallowing rats etc., you know, totally common stuff ;-) ) This is a real small gem in metal. Malsain is very straight forward black metal with an exceptional female vocalist, who quit growling after Malsain and switched over to nordic folk. An adorable piece of music with own vibe, still has loyal fans because they were quite athmospheric and a thing on their own. Best of metal underground. #Cypecore The Alliance This is a very hot new band from Germany. Their concept is science fiction metalcore, and man, they are powerful. Watch the official video, so you get the vibe, it is not distracting from the music, since music, video (and also their live appearance, which is the same as in the video) are one concept. Great energy, great instrumentalists, exceptional drummer. They get famous fast! #Voice of Baceprot - School Revolution #MetalDNA ? These hijab-wearing three schoolgirls from West Java rock all Indonesian festivals and are declared fans of bands like Lamb of God. They ROCK. Funk bass and solid metal works. Such a fun to see ... (The official video has best sound quality, and sorry, I can not say anything to the indonesian lyrics, but hey - did I mention it ROCKS?) That's it for now! Party on, Kel! Party on, Rich!

Music to me goes hand in hand with mood, on COB's part i am more driven into the melodies and solo but i think ones personality has a lot to do with to what kind of music they can get into. The vocal style is powerful and i found my self listening to COB when i was 16-20 because fast and powerful music were one of the ways to get rid of my teenage restlessness and 'angst'. When i want to listen to something calm i listen to classical music. So in a nutshell, its the raw power, when you feel like you'd want to scream, thats when you(or i) listen to COB.

That's funny. When I found out about Kel's classical background I remembered this video. I'm glad that you've found it. Instrumentals in heavy metal music were always very important. There was a time when lots of albums had at least one instrumental. If you have the time please check ANNIHILATOR "Crystal Ann" and KING DIAMOND "Insanity". These are two of my all time favorites, maybe you can react to them in the same session as they're kind of short. :-)

What we like about that growling style is that it's rough and cold, heavy and extreme. Paired with the melodies it makes for an interesting contrast. COB has horror themes in their lyrics and with the Grim Reaper as their mascot. Theyre named after an infamous murder story that happened at a lake near them. So it all comes together in this heavy style that's really powerful and very 80s/90s style.

OK, this might help out with your question on the growly vocals... in those songs, the melody and harmonies are all in the GUITARS, most melodeath is like that... best example would be Arch Enemy and even amon Amarth, all the melody lines and stuff are in the guitars and all the vocals are monotone growls... hope that helped...

antonio vivaldi wrote four seasons as a 4 part variation on a theme,same tune but different speed The Four Seasons (Italian: Le quattro stagioni) is a group of four violin concerti by Italian composer Antonio Vivaldi, each of which gives musical expression to a season of the year. They were written around 1716-1717 and were published in 1725 in Amsterdam, together with eight additional concerti, as Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione ("The Contest Between Harmony and Invention").

You mentioned the scale length of a violin compared to a guitar, Kel - just for a help in understanding / comparing ... The "scale length" - the length of the strings from the bridge to the nut - of a 4/4 violin is generally 12.8 inches, while the larger viola is generally 16-17 inches for a full size instrument. A cello (again, full-size or 4/4) is usually a bit under 27.5 inches. Not counting extended-range or baritone guitars, electric guitars are usually in one of two sizes - Fenders (and guitars modeled after them like the ones in this video) are normally 25.5 inches, while Gibson-style guitars are normally 24.75 inches - either being just a bit shorter than a cello and roughly twice as long as a violin. This means, for those who aren't musicians, that on a guitar, your fingers must stretch twice as far to get from one note to the next when compared to the same stretch on a violin (which was, of course, your point :-D)!

Alexi took violin lessons before he switched to guitar. Roope Latvala likes to play Bach on guitar. Their keyboardist studied classical music&piano at very high level.. Their first album is very much neo-classical metal... I think they appreciate classical music quite a bit and it shines through :) I'm not 100% sure but I think there are no other instruments in this video than the two guitars, I believe they're using effects to make their sound a lot more like bowed string instruments. Anyway, great rendition, great reaction! :)

When it comes to vocals, this just might not be your cup of tea, and there's nothing wrong with that! When it comes to this type of metal, Alexi always had a very unique scream. It's guttural at times and yet has a pitch to it. Another thing I always loved was seeing the songs live. Seeing someone play a complex guitar lead while also doing vocals just requires an amount of talent not many people have. Loved the video by the way!

Like I tell my wife, you need to tune out the vocals and listen to the music. I love Bodom and Alexi is, hands down, one of the greatest guitarists on the planet. Listen to the guitar solo on Hate Me!....it's like King Diamond, the music is amazing but the vocals are an acquired taste...

In the case of melodic death metal, instead of the vocals being melodic and the guitar being rhythmic they are trading places. So if you listen to the vocals as the rhythm and the guitar as the melody it makes a lot more sense musically

@Kel-n-Rich to me personally, in regards to some of the growling; it helps convey and bring the more primal and driven emotions to the forefront. Being a vet I can relate far better to a more raw and at times adrenaline fueled vocal performance. Amon Amarth is a good example of what I'm trying to expand upon (Raven's Flight, the Way of Vikings, Crack the Sky.) As a fun little sensory experiment (no safeword required lol) try to picture an artist like Prince or Michael Stipe(R.E.M.) doing the vocals for Metallica or even Drowning Pool, it doesn't have the same level of gravitas. Imo some songs work and convey better with some of the darker, driven, and raw vocals.

If only there was a country where by mastering own instrument you are at least in Playboy (Linda Lampenius violin), Apocalyptica Cello. Alexi Laiho Guitar. Well all of those comes from Finland. And Song name? Darude - Sandstorm... Also Finland. All the best for you and your followers.

i am late for this but i want to share my opinion anyway lol.. i completely understood why you guys dislike the vocals. i did too back when i started listening to metal. but surely enough i tried to imagine what it would sound like if i changed the vocal to clear ones.. for example the song "everytime i die" or mostly any songs of "Cob" its just doesnt feel right. this band is what got me into metal because of the riffs and solos.. so i started to search for other band thats similar to this and different types of growl and screams. the more i listen to it the more i understand the power and the energy those screams and growls are pumping my excitement. listening to the riffs and solos made me appreciate the creativity and skills they have and motivate me to learn them.
