Chile - Pinochet resigns as army chief

Chile's former dictator, Augusto Pinochet, resigned as army chief on Tuesday (10/03) after 25 years in the post. Pinochet, 82, handed over the post of army chief to General Ricardo Izurieta in a ceremony presided over by President Eduardo Frei and attended by 5,000 officers and troops. Pinochet, however, will be sworn in as a senator for life on
Wednesday (11/03). His appointment to the senate has angered many because of widespread abuses during his military dictatorship.
