This was a nice, chilled out, little overnight trip to Etive back in early November. I try my usual marks around Ardchattan and Airds before heading north into more remote territory, fishing along the way. Coming ashore at a favourite beach I set up my tent on the shoreline and moor up for the night. Cooking over my campfire proves a little more successful than my shorefishing attempts, but I have a fine, peaceful evening.
Next day dawns rather wet but the rain comes and goes as I sort out breakfast and waste more time feeding crabs. Back afloat I try a variety of new and old marks before ending up with an hour tied to one of the buoys near Kelly's Pier at Taynuilt.
And a wee apology... I was using a new camera for some of this video and had a few issues, so there are couple of sequences which are a little out of focus. Hopefully minimal, but I learned a few lessons making this video!

Thanks very much, but I think I'd need a lot more dedication to get anywhere near the big boys! I just do what I like doing, which involves as much camping, hiking, messing about in boats as it does fishing - all preferably in beautiful surroundings 🙂

Hi Youssef, I've never made it to Morocco although the trout fishing in the Atlas mountains looks magical. I love my country but the constant damp cold does get to you at this time of year. Roll on spring and a bit more daylight! Cheers, Doug

Well I was on Etive again yesterday - and very glad of a heated tent on a very cold night. There were a couple of guys with a canoe fishing from the opposite bank (pinched our first choice of campsite 😢). Loads of surface ice this morning, floating down from Glen Etive, so I hope they managed to find their way back OK. The upper loch can get completely choked with ice at times.

love to see youre video's. Can you recomment me a place between Oban and fort William where you can catch Pollack from the shore? Wa want to camp on that place to.
@Corkwing-DougK
@Corkwing-DougK Год назад
I think you'll struggle to find a spot that's good for camping and also good for pollack. You'll find fish at many of the narrows - Corran ferry, Ballachulish Bridge, Creran Bridge, etc. (Falls of Lora at Connel might be a bit much of a flow though). I don't think I've ever camped along that stretch of coast as the road runs pretty close to the sea for much of it, which really doesn't appeal to me - I prefer to be miles from anywhere.

Thanks Tam - I was actually up on Etive last night, in almost the same spot. Really camping rather than anything else, but we fished for 2-3 hours and there were plenty of the usual smallish spurdogs. Was glad of the tent stove though, as it was pretty chilly overnight. I've been poring over the forecasts all through Christmas but this was the only decent chance for a camp, and it paid off nicely. Set me up nicely for the new year 👍👍

Hi Colin, I'm glad you enjoy my videos. It's a matter of opinion, but if you're an angler then don't rule out a small inflatable as an alternative to a kayak as it makes a better fishing platform, certainly at sea. Otherwise a kayak is great fun just to paddle quietly and explore places you couldn't reach otherwise.

@Corkwing-DougK
@Corkwing-DougK Год назад
Glad you enjoyed the video. I wish I could help you with some easy access marks but most are anything but that. If you're up Loch Linnhe way again, you could always try the old ferry slips at Ballachulish bridge on Loch Leven. They hold good conger just down the side of the ramp. Likewise Lochaline old pier (stone jetty near the ferry) holds conger, wrasse, etc. The big west pier at Lochaline is where the skate are caught but there are fish just down the side as well - although you often find that pier blocked off when timber is being loaded.

Love these videos. If you dont mind me asking, what do you need to take your boat on thses loch's? Ive read than you dont need to register anything on sea lochs? I have a sib with a 3.5hp outboard and i would love to go Nd do some fishing and camping for a few nights. Thanks
@Corkwing-DougK
@Corkwing-DougK Год назад
Assuming you are not targetting or retaining salmon or sea trout, then you don't need any permits or anything. Bear in mind that many lochs are quite exposed to wind so pick your days carefully and watch for narrows where the tidal movement can be strong. Camping is generally fine as long as you tidy up completely after you, although it's not always easy to find a good spot on some lochs. Midges will be a complete pain on any calm evenings at this time of year, so I recommend a head net...
@Ryan-ek6mx
@Ryan-ek6mx Год назад
@@Corkwing-DougK thanks for the reply. I don't plan on keeping any fish if I do manage to catch anything. In your opinion, would you think 3.5hp would be enough on a sib? I've heard the midges can be a nightmare. I will definitely purchase a head net, thanks
@Corkwing-DougK
@Corkwing-DougK Год назад
Hi Ryan, I have a 3.5hp on my 3.1m SIB and it pushes it along at around 5-6 mph, so plenty enough for a cruise around and light on fuel. It can get breezy on the lochs when you're fishing, which will largely kill your chances for most species as you'll drift very quickly in a SIB. You can get around this by anchoring (1.5kg grapnel, 2m of chain and paracord will do) or by using a drogue to slow you down (even a bucket on a few feet of rope will help). As for the midges, I prefer to camp on beaches or slightly exposed locations, as even 5 or 6 mph of wind will thin them out. I avoid woods or damp areas if I can as there are often hordes hiding in wait!

Hi Hugh, It's something I've thought about as I do probably have most of the video clips I need, but I've never got around to pulling it all together. I did do a review of sorts on my website - corkwing.co.uk/boat-fishing/orkney-longliner-2/ - and that still reflects my opinion of the Orkney. I guess that's my way of saying "maybe" 🙂 whilst avoiding the question of when I might get around to actually producing a video! Cheers, Doug

Funnily enough the gas cooker thing came up today. We were out on Etive for an overnight camp, and it was so cold on the boat that even a propane/butane mix just couldn't get anywhere. Luckily we'd had a couple of coffees ashore on the campfire, or I might have got quite grumpy (a cold caffeine fix just doesn't work for me 😀). Your link works fine by the way - did you get anything decent when you were out? It's been a while since Etive was kind to me on the fishing front, much though I love the place 🙁

@Corkwing-DougK Год назад
@@garyroberts8502 I don't launch at St. Andrews - a friend has a boat in the harbour and that's how I get out. There isn't really a good slipway there and I don't think I've ever seen anyone try, except for the dinghy sailors. Never tried it, but Arbroath had a slipway built about 10 years ago - there have been problems with it though (vehicles getting stuck in the sand) and I'm not sure whether it's still open.
