Growing up in the 80's, we used to pick up Canadian radio stations across Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This was one of those great Canadian bands that we would hear in the early 80's. We got a steady dose of great artists like Rush, April Wine, Frozen Ghost, Prism, Kim Mitchell and so many others. Canada has some great musicians. I feel so blessed to have grown up hearing these bands.
Overlooked? Might depend where you live. I currently hear this several times a week on radio here in Vancouver, and remember this being a huge hit back in the day.
Lynda Bartram it got a lot of airplay here in the Bay Area in late summer/fall of 1981. But I have not heard it on the radio since. 80’s stations will play Duran Duran and other new wave bands or hair bands but won’t touch many of these early 80’s pop/rock one hit wonders. “Sausalito Summernight” by Diesel is another lost tune I haven’t heard since 1981 on the radio either.
To anyone who lives outside of Vancouver (such as myself), yes, it’s a sadly overlooked song. Anyone here who thinks we’re all nuts for saying so either A) Lives somewhere near the band’s home region, or B) Doesn’t like the song. There isn’t an option C.
I was 16 when this song came out , wasn't sure who sang it , so I had to look it up, but it just popped in my mind today. Always loved the song, still a great song.
You must be talking about the SCTV skit? If you are , you must note the funniest part of that skit. When John Candy has to gulp back the tears…. Why is someone else’s heartache so damn funny to the rest of us?!?!?! Classic comedy moment
+Robert Miller The 80's were a great time, weren't they? I remember hearing this song a lot, many summer days at the local water park. When you get that time machine, please let me go back with you. While were there, we'll invest in this rinky dink company called Microsoft and be filthy stinking rich when we come back-LOL!!!!!! Have a great day.
+buzzboy14 xoxo If only...I would buy a lot of companies that is for certain. These guys may have only had the one hit I ever heard in Minnesota where I was in 1981 but it does sound like gold compared to td's garbage. I would have liked to have seen them play this live.
+bucky468 Guess the station I heard this song on thought the other singles were not popular enough. Glad they had a career in Canada and that at least we got this song.
One of the best songs to come out of Canada. The overlapping vocals and harmonies are amazing. It's no wonder it was nominated for a Juno award. Those lyrics really hit home if you've ever had a relationship go sour. Easily my favorite Chilliwack song.
Oh man...THE 80s...WHAT A DECADE!!! When music was FUN & REAL...WHEN MTV PLAYED MUSIC VIDEOS...IMAGINE THAT!!! I'm so glad I got to grow up in the 80s. Just a fun decade & era of music to ever come around in my opinion. Great, Great music...Great, Great 1 HIT WONDERS, & Great times. I loved this song in 1981. I was in 7th grade. 97 WABB here in Mobile Alabama used to play this song in regular rotation. I have it on my MP3 PLAYER and still listen to it often. I say it all the time and I'LL say it until I die....to really understand the 80s you had experience and live in the 80s. I wish someone would build a time machine and take all the 80s Fanatics back to a fun & special time in all of our lives. I tell my daughter who is 13 mow about the 80s & she always says I lived back in the stone-age times...no cell phone, no internet, no facebook... I always say this was a GREAT TIME to live in. Saturday afternoon at the mall video game arcade with all my friends trying to beat each other's HIGH SCORE on Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Astroids & Pitfall.
Loved your comment... yes, living and growing up in the 80’s was thee best times of my Life... more exciting and more meaningful than what is happening today... where is Doc Brown... hurry up with that Delorean so we can time-travel back to the 80’s in style!
I’ve been searching for this song literally for decades. It was one of those I heard on the radio back when it was released, fell in love with it, but had no idea the title or the artist. Funny how I just now found it. I’m going to play this song till my ears bleed.
I'm 55 now. Back in the day, I would listen to FM radio from both Montreal and Ottawa. To hear all those wonderful music acts like Trooper, Sheriff, Rush, April Wine, Loverboy, Chilliwack, The Box, Men Without Hats and so many others. Too many more to mention all of them. So many stupendous memories. And yes, MY GIRL made it to #22 in the BILLBOARD Hot 100.
I heard this song playing on the radio in a tiny shop in a small town in Brazil about years 10 years ago. I being a Canadian lad made my Brazilian wife wait in the store with me until the song was thru. It sounded wonderful.
OMG! I have sung partial lyrics to this song since I was a kid. I kinda thought maybe I just made the partial song up in my head bc no body but me seemed to remember it. I love it!
I had the same deja vu experience. Heard the lyrics in my head hear and there for a couple decades. Then I walked into a grocery store and heard the song on the speakers. I googled it over and over for months and I finally found out I wasn't crazy after all.
I forgot about this song they switched the music at my job to the 80s running a band saw I heard it the other day I turned off the saw and listened with amazement its been at least 30 years
acca freakin pella!!!! Great vocals!!! best 3 man Canadian band... well, there was Triumph... 2nd! 2nd best Caaa... ooooh yeah.. forgot about RUSH... 3RD!!!!!! LOL!!!!
I heard this song on the XM radio and it has been stuck in my head for a week. :( I think its a conspiracy from the Canadians to make us drink beer and eat bacon.
I first heard this in --- oh, gosh, I wanna say --- 1984? Somebody handed me a Sony Walkman and said, "Listen to this!" Absolutely blown away at 2:40 and I still am forty years later.
So eerily evocative of the early '80s that I could swear I'm eight years old, riding around in my dead dad's truck at night and listening to the radio--starting to worry a little about the fact that I haven't done my homework yet.
Chillawack!!! Wow! What a song! Everytime i hear this tune it transports me back to the 80s and reminds me of those girls l knew a long time ago who left me standing alone! Gone! Gone! Gone!
Great song. Classic! Chilliwack is one the most underrated band who write wonderfully magical songs. Their passionate music will forever live in our hearts.
I can remember being 10 years old and listening to this song in the middle of the night on a transistor radio on K-98 in Austin TX in 1981. So great! I loved this song.
This is one of those songs that just instantly takes me back to that time period. I didn't love, or hate it. But as soon as I hear it, right away I think of 1981, my favorite year for music as a teenager...
Yes, Ms. Deborah, same here, remembering people I knew then as a high school junior. Although I liked it enough to buy this and some other Chilliwack albums.
This song evokes generational feelings of the late 70’s early 80’s rock, I was around 45 years old when this came out and remember it well. I also think of Cliff Richards “A little in love” and “We Don’t Talk Anymore”. Also evokes: and “Luke, I am your father”
Those were the days of those catchy rock pop tunes you just couldn't get enough of like this great Jam, so you went & got the 45 or Album! So many great Canadian bands from the early to mid 80s on the airwaves!
I like their hair.. And this song of course. I have been searching for this song, I heard it on the radio today and I finally found it! Very catchy song, I love it.
Gregory E. You'll find as the "Gen-Ex" ers start aging and taking the radio jobs, you'll find a lot of these cool songs being played more and more. Thanks to whomever did it this time to inspire a newer generation of listeners.
The first time I remember hearing "My girl", I was piloting the "Flight of the Phoenix", my 56 chevy , and had my Fulltron stereo system zeroed in on the Spokane FM rock channel. I had just touched down on the Main in Wenatchee,Wa. comming in off Deepspace Highway. I distinctly remember the goosebumps you get when one hears the "Good Stuff" (ASMR), and here I am 22 seconds later at 64, be careful, you young little nippers Time travel moves ever so rapid, but the memory remains, coming back with the music!
When I was about 3 or 4 y/o one of my older cousins used to be a DJ in my native country of El Salvador and he used to bring records to my grandma's house and play them in his free time, well this was one of my favorite songs he used to play, I would beg him to repeat it over and over again, after a few years I never heard this song again, not even here in the US, but some times I would have those childhood memories and think about this song, as I learned the English language I realized the song said "She's gone..."but I could never find the artist, I thought it was the Police because my cousin used to played them a lot, but it wasn't, but last year I heard it for the first time in 40 years on Walmart radio and paid attention to the lyrics and found it here on youtube, I feel a great sense of accomplishment!!!!😄👍
LOVED this song and STILL do!!! The vocals are killer on "Gone, gone, gone, been gone so long" ..... they just don't make QUALITY ish like this ANYMORE!!! This was and STILL is my jam!!! #TeamChilliwack #LOVEthisishrighthere!
oh Lordy...one of the BEST Canadian songs ever made...luv it,luv it,luv it....thanx Chilliwack....unforgetable! 'Cuse me while I wipe my brow...good stuff.
Being a Gen X'r hearing this for the first time and loving it since I saw it on MTV when they were a still a new thing in 1982 brought me here!!! .I never forgot this song or who sang it..about 17 years ago I had a store put the vinyl onto a CD so I can jam in my car since no CD was available then...Rock on!!!
It's funny, i grew up and only knew this song hearing it in the early 80's on my little transistor radio in Toronto... memories of doing homework... lol. I have only now seen the video for it.
I am 51 years old. I remember when I first started getting into popular music, my family had a big wooden console stereo. It was a holdover from the 60s. This is one of the first songs I remember hearing on the radio
Love the Gone Gone Gone, fingers flicking and the harmonies part of this brilliant band out of classy Canada. And also M2 is so amazing with their topnotch videos ive seen a few on You Tube the quality. To be blessed and part of the greatest decade of all time never to forget miss it so much oh hail the 80s atmosphere vibes could harp on explain
I was about a month into the 6th grade when this was released. I recall the concession area quickly emptying as rollerskates hit the floor when this came on!! Pretty Cool Canadian Group even though this was to be their biggest hit!!
I was about 12 years old and just getting into music..this song was 33rd on Casey kasems top 40. I loved it and when it dropped out the next week I never heard it again. Fast forward 20 yrs and I googled the words inremembered and found it..then youtube showed up..I was ecstatic..12 yrs old alll, over again..
Oh my!! I have been trying to remember the name of this song and band for over 30 years! I was starting to think I made the song My Girl up. My 35th class reunion is this weekend and I found a scrapbook from my 7 th grade year that listed all hot songs from 1980. Finally found my answer
Dude that cover was a fucking masterpiece! Solid 9.5/10 at the very least! John Candy's backup singing brings tears of joy to my otherwise melancholy demeanor. It's up there with Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and Bach. God bless you, Johnathan Confection -- or his nickname, John Candy. May you rest in peace.😇
Ive loved this song since i heard it on Mtv back when it started. i love singing it and hitting all the different voices...Ill never get tired of it..awesome tune!!
I never knew this even song even existed until 2022 ! I use to watch MTV back in the 80’s just like watching VH1 as well when they first came out. Never seen this on any on those channels then. The very first time I heard this song was actually on Sirius XM radio (2022) and as I started to listen to this song I really liked it a Lot ! Great song and I’m glad this band actually made it to the Canadian Rock n Roll Hall of Fame 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯
I thought I had a pretty good grasp of early Eighties music as a DJ for ten years. I heard this song for the first time in February, 2018. How this song was not an international #1 is beyond me. The harmonies are so rich and well designed - the song is a complete masterpiece and I am so glad to know it now! Chilliwack is now one of my favorite "New" old bands. Incredible orchestration and production - thanks for brightening my day!
Canadian Music pioneer Superstars such as Chilliwack have put Canada on the map literally!!!!!The world needs more Canada because Canada Rocks the World!!!!!
I met Brian McLeod twice ! Really nice guy to chat about music . Seen him at ClubSoda in Van a few times and at the liquor store in Kitsilano . He was my favorite Canadian guitarist . The guy was so underrated ! Tragic loss to cancer ...
