Chimera 7 w / DJI o3 Long Range Test 20 Km from Home (FPV)

This was an attempt to reach 20Km (about 12.4 miles) from home position .
The weather was not optimal . High humidity affected the signal and the video quality . Medium side winds made the craft to drift to a longer path .
In ideal conditions it could make 21Km or more .
It's ok , next time 😉
Frame : Chimera 7 pro w/ modifications
Motors : EMAX ECO2 2807 1300KV (modified to 1180KV)
Props : 7535 Gemfan 3 Blade Fiber Nylon
FC : Speedybee F7 v3
Firmware : iNAV 7.0
ESC : SpeedyBee BL32 50A 4-in-1
Receiver : MATEK ELRS-R24-Diversity
RC : Eachine TX16S
ELRS Module : BETAFPV 2.4Ghz 1W
Video Transmitter & Antennas : DJI o3 w/ two DIY LHCP Cloverleaf
FPV Camera ( o3 ) w/ Servo Control ( -90 +30 degrees)
Goggles & Antennas : DJI V2 w/ two DIY Cloverleaf (up) & two DIY Helical (down) LHCP
GPS - Compass : Matek GNSS M10-5883
Batteries : DIY 6s3p+ 6s3p in parallel Li-Ion 18650 Efest 3000 mah (18000mah total)

Thanks . But you will need two high gain directional antennas on goggles , make sure that the polarization match and the flight path will not mess up with the first Fresnel zone

@@andrewbt87 Yes , two packs in parallel . But if you see in description , motors are modified to 1180KV and in theory they have more torque and they are more efficient . Also the propellers are 7535 . Yes 6s2p 21700 is fine

amazing, so many questions. Please indulge me with these answers. Maybe you can post them in the community section. why Inav and not Ardupilot with missions? You mentioned that motors have been modified, did you rewind them by hand, or can you explain? Can you share picture of the two batteries on the quad? Your cloverleaf set up. Did it lose video at all? I have dual truerc x-air antennas. I find it very finicky to aim. Also when my quad pitches to far forward I start to lose mbps. Starts showing red at the bottom.

No , I had video all the time. It only dropped at some points to 2 Mbps . If you have problems with reception, learn about Fresnel zones. The terrain relief is very important when it comes to long range. Take care

@@YTFPV I've never tried it. I thing it depends from a lot of factors. Usually at long distances , even small obstacles has big effect it signal strength . IMHO , if you don't loose the link, it will be at the edge.

There are two dipoles (not T shape) in the back , with 60 degree angle between them and 20 degree angle with the vertical axis . Take a look at community tab

24 Km is out of range , maybe 23 😆 I have no experience with commercial antennas . I use DIY cloverleaf . Theoretically all omni antennas has similar behavior . Take care

Hello! May I ask if the BNF chimera7 Pro v2 HD 6s would be able to carry 2x 8.000liion batteries? Both would be like 1800gr much less than yours! Would it be sufficient or from the extreme weight the fligh time would be bad? Thanks!

I believe that this weight is at the top limit of the "distance / weight" curve . You could remove the plastic side cover panels and the gopro mount to save some weight. And use 7.5' props . It's not very fun to fly such a heavy quad . It's only for test purposes . You can have a more fun 30Km round trip with half the battery weight (9000 mah)

Wow I think this is the longest range I seen for a Chimera 7, I have one question : I thought that the DJI FPV transmitter is limited to 13Km range, have you done something to go further ?

Thanks.o3 has a limit between 23 and 24 Km . The old air unit has 13.4 Km with goggles V2 and with goggles 2 , I thing is 28 Km

The module is 1W but it was in auto mode with max power at 500mw . At the top left of the screen you can see how "TPWR" changes during the whole trip . 18000mah total OMG. WOW over 41KM total distance so crazy. I have a 12,000mah 6s4p I turned an 7" into an 8" perfect conditions and cruising speed I have done 30km total distance. And a bunch of 25km and longer. But damn risking it all go out max distance and if wind changes or anything quad is gone 😂 I have another two 6s 3000mah li-ion I want to add try out 18,000mah. Been curious if add flight time or too much for my tiny 2806.5 motors. I have 2807 1050kV on the way. Hoping a lil extrra size help. Lower kV be more efficient

Yes, it's risky when you have not planned it well . In my case , I had three alternative landing spots ( "safe homes" in INAV ) just in case . And yes , lower KV is better for long range

If you are in FCC mode, 40Mhz bandwidth and clear LOS in many different places, losing video at one mile is very strange. Your TX antenna might have a defect or the connectors might be loose. I can’t think of anything else. Take care

Come on, with my frsky analog i can get 40 meters maximum, where is the trick here? Apart from radio tower transmitter of course, how can you get video signal?

Radio tower 😂🤣😅😂 . If you have high gain directional antennas and you avoid fresnel zones , everything is possible. Take care

Only DIY LHCP helical antennas on V2 goggles and LHCP cloverleaf on o3

Thanks . Beyond 15Km and until 20 it was below 10Mbps. The lowest I saw was 2 at the turning point and after that it got better and better.

No. Old air unit and Vista has 13Km. o3 has around 23.4 Km

Only "Altitude Hold" . Unfortunately cruise mode is not working very well . I mean it does the job but the video is very shaky , especially when there is wind from the back. I hope that the developers in the future will give as the tools to adjust the way it behaves, when the speed exceeds the target value.

That's excellent info to know! I've been updating my stuff, but can't really test it due to freezing temperatures and wind. Hoping to eventually reach these insane sorts of distances myself, but I need a hill. You've given me a new goalpost to reach.
