Chimeras & Manticores | D&D Monster Lore | The Dungeoncast Ep.151 

Whenever I hear “chimera” Dragon’s Dogma immediately comes to mind.

No bullshit I was just about to find a way to get a chimera and a manticore into my campaign. You two are reading my thoughts I swear to Demogorgon!

One of the things I decided in my campaign was that there were going to knightly orders tied to monsters and Manticores were one of the easiest to write because of the demon Allocer. They used morning stars and demon-like lions in most of their imagery. They have faction spells like the Oath of Black Wings, and Withering Justice.

I know someone probably talked about this before, but in every video in which Will wears that hat, I just can't help but keep looking at how it seems almost transparent, so you can see some of the books behind him, like Will is some kind of ghost or something.

I need more Manny the Manticore in my life.

I based a guild in my world around the Witchers from the games and books so I cant wait to throw a Chimera at them after they nearly just died from a Cockatrice in the last session.

I was actually born around the area of Bangladesh (neighbor of India) which holds the jungles of sundarbans famous for tigers (specifically the royal bengal tiger). and i had the opportunity to see honey collectors and lumberjacks that use the mask on the back of the head. It's obviously not a fool proof technique, but for something so simple it is definitely more effective than one would suspect. and i heard a lot of stories of man eating tigers. what i have collected from it all seems to be that if a tiger is moving its personal territory and it overlaps with a village, they could attack humans. and as the saying goes, once they taste human flesh, they come back for it more and more. there's no scientific proof of it as far as i am aware that human flesh somehow tastes better to them though. and finally, the color festival brian mentioned is called holee. its a very happy, joyous celebration that everyone enjoys together.

I love all your podcasts, but Monster Mythos has to be my fav series.

I've only found the depiction of manticores more and more fascinating the more I think of them. While chimeras are the more well-known "monstrous hybrid" creature, the specific body part combinations and the choices of animals of the manticore is way more interesting because they really do seem like a fiendish abomination created from the "fears/enemies of mankind" from nature: - Body of a lion, the "maneater" of the plains - Tail of a scorpion, the tiny crawling creature with poison to kill and not be seen until it's too late - Wings of a bat, the "bloodsucking" terror that flaps in the night - The jaw and teeth of a shark, the hunter of the seas And of course... - The face and mind of a man, the most dangerous beast of all

I actually took a break from it to watch this video.anyway the chimeras in that are awesome. in that game the goat head casts spells and the snake head which acts as the beasts tail spews poison gas clouds. also a fun fact about them. if you kill they lion head before the goat head in dogma I'm pretty sure the beast begins moving around more like a goat than a lion. honestly I think I much prefer a snake head to a dragons head. I also had an idea for a reflavored demonic chimera which would have the goat head be the main head. the snake head which would be the beasts tail would normally coil around the chimeras body and the lion head would be on the beasts back similar to the goat head of a dragons dogma chimera. except the lions head would have a mane made of fire it's back paws would be covered in fire and its front goat hooves would be red hot on their bottom and scorch the ground where ever it walks. and if I had to mash a chimera altogether using some of my favorite animals I'd go Siberian tiger main head, anoconda snake head for tail, and just a goat head with big curly rams horns on its back. also while I'm here I had and idea for an Egyptian themed lich I thought of a few days ago I wanted to share for anyone who'd like to read about it. firstly instead of being more skeletal it'd be mummified and wrapped in bandages perhaps along with wearing robes of some kind. I don't really knows what people in Egypt wear sorry. then he'd also be wearing one of those headdress crown things pahroahs wore with the snake on the front. it'd then have symbols that look like heiroglypics carved into its mummified flesh that are magical and increase it's power. perhaps he'd have spells that summon sandstorms or swarms of flesh eating Sarab beetles. maybe he'd have some kind of feline familiar. anyway those are my ideas I'm sure i'm not the first to come up with ideas like these but I hope anyone who reads this far liked them. have a good day all of you. :)

I remember they had a manticore in the beginning of campaign 2 of CR. Was pretty nasty but I would def stick a chimera in somewhere as a deterrent.

The beast called the Manticore is found in the bible (Isaiah 9.14-15). The monster with the head of a lion (Leo) and tail of a scorpion (Scorpio) became the biblical Israel. The four sons of Ham (heat) are, in birth order, Leo, Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio. This monster called Israel represents the ancient season of summer, when the year was divided into three seasons of Winter/Shem/Nahor aka Sagittarius thru Pisces. Spring/Japheth/Abram = Aries thru Cancer. Summer/Ham/Haran = Leo thru Scorpio. The head is the Lion/Leo aka the nobility/royalty, the tail is the scorpion aka the liar found throughout the bible. Virgo is the palm frond/branch (see Virgo holding palm frond in right hand) and Libra (water plant) is the first of the southern constellations known as the sea of stars. See ratio of land vs water in the hemispheres.

The Chimera, like the Beholder, is an easily identified monster but ripe for tinkering with its abilities / power set. No two should be alike and possibly there is only one on the party’s plane of existence. Make it a beast, a BBEG or even a mercurial NPC who is alternately helpful and harmful as it has its own agenda and goals that are unknown to the party. Lots of possibilities with these creatures.

Manticore vs Chimera Who would win?

Personally, I kinda imagine Manticores to sound like John Goodman in that scene in The Big Lebowski where he's smashing the car... *Manticore pounces on a guy and has him pinned* Manticore: "You see what happens Larry!?" *rips guys arm off* Manticore: "You see what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass!?" *tears open his chest*

To answer brians question 110 people were killed in 2021 by tigers in india, in 1907 the champawat tiger killed 436 people.. so the odds are better today but many bodies arent found so the accurate number of people killed by tigers is hard to get, in the sundarbhans tigers killed 90 people each year, its a small mangrove salt marsh that borders india and bangladesh, if you live in tiger country the odds are moderate at best but its deffinatly more common than been struck by lightning.
