They do not have backups. That's the point. When you visit a website, the copy you have is not your copy. It's transitory. This is not recent, but the EU has GDPR regulations it follows which allows websites to hold customer data caches, but the content can be erased. This can include information your device has that others do not want you to copy/hold onto. Millions of websites are temporarily archived in google, but what if Google is sent a directive to delete them. This is known as a Chilling Effect, because legal requests can be sent on behalf of people in corporations to delete archives, and scraping/bots can also be banned. The cache/backup that google has, is not 'theirs'. Hence the data can be deleted on request. There are ways around this, i.e. using web plugins to archive websites, that then send this information off to archive sites. But, these would be blacklisted heavily in china. There's no archive for the news there, and the social media isn't private. If you send a photo, it can be deleted from your phone's storage and messages by request(s) in the app(s).

That’s not quite right, a docker engine is a repository for Virtual machines, older technology meant you had to configure the resources for each VM yourself, ram, cpu cores etc, however docker manages the resources more efficiently, imagine a box full of resources that your VMs can dip into.

That's what they were banning with the Docker mirrors. Someone wrote a docker script to auto-scrape and compare websites for changes. They likely pre-selected websites in the script to mirror that may have been chinese, but could also have included news sites, and used to batch-download over a VPN, etc. Thus making an unofficial news pipeline, or a way to archive news from inside/outside of china that could bypass the stateful inspection in the Great Firewall by compressing/encrypting the images and web content as if it were local news. But they didn't understand the memo and had to delete the entire website, not just the script. Such scraper/archivers exist because News is also being deleted in the US, and Europe as well. News sites close down. They change hosts. They delete their own content regularly. e.g. even articles from 2019 are 'missing'. i.e. Trump's twitter history, gone.

The same rules and technology used in China, were made by the US companies, it's just applied differently. The Great Firewall is just a lot more ferocious because it's tied into the fabric of operating in China. Companies cannot refuse a request, because they will almost literally be shut off the internet, their connection will be cut either physically or figuratively, i.e. power cut to the building, fiber lines cut or unplugged, the ISP can also be shut down if they don't follow up. Corporates, Employees are also 'encouraged' to be party members in large corporations, they are also obliged to report and follow directives to delete content and remove/report on customers. Full teams exist in these social media companies to track, delete trending topics and manually edit the trending lists during office hours, sic. Which is often why some topics 'disappear' after 7am, or it's equivalent on social media sites. Companies can also pay to have topics trend or be hidden by bribing the employees or managers. A considerable amount of 90s and 2000s internet is just inaccessible because there's nowhere to find it. If the archive is tampered with or sent legal documents, a person can erase their traces or have their archives deleted. What exists is often allowed only because it hasn't yet been banned. Books are regularly banned and kept in various places. Disney has deleted an entire series of Willow from Disney+, Some BBC TV shows are completely gone because a fire tore through the old film stocks in the 80s, sic. It is also part of the EU GDPR that people can delete their past, i.e. history of crimes, past associations, and so on. If someone is a serial offender, they can delete their history and work connections to hide themselves and their past. Which has happened a few times in the 2000s where teachers deleted their history of being arrested on CP and assault to get jobs in other countries/states. happens every day. The sites don't exist, and the articles can't be searched for. When websites crash, stop working, change, that old data is only found in search results that may no longer exist. While there are archive websites, a lot of 'official content' is also just changed or edited over time, including the news. Without these archive sites, you would have absolutely no idea if information has changed, including books or other indexes / references. Same with places like Wikipedia, which is often changing the content of it's pages to comply with commercial interests. i.e. Each Country's Wikipedia page can have wildly different references in some cases, because the editing of information is usually on a country-by-country basis. So if something is removed for legal or political reasons, Spain/France/Africa can sometimes have the original quote and references, even if the references no longer exist due to GDPR or legal removal.
