Funny enough that there's Chinese netizens mocking Japan that they can't eat a whole watermelon without cashing out their monthly salary. Now their watermelon is dirt cheap and the farmers are crying.

Now this makes it clear why new graduates and the unemployed would rather take their chances on the shrinking job markets in the cities than go back to their hometowns to farm. It's a choice between the rock and the hard place.

At least these people have a farm and they can plant something they can eat or sell. People who spent thousands of hours and dollars on education to be replaced by AI in 2025 have none of that. Now they're useless and worthless. WM is not a good crop, they all come ripe at the same time and then there is a glut, plus they take lots of water to grow.

I agree. I have even decided not to purchase any tea grown in China because of concerns about the polluted water that will be in the tea leaf that is irrigated with it. Disappointing because I enjoy pu-er and lapsang, but I have also been exposed to a great deal of toxic smoke a few years ago when a town 5 miles from my home at the time burned, so I am going to stick to Taiwanese tea to reduce my toxic intake wherever I reasonably can.

Careful. I studied the blockade and how the South survived during the civil war. You can actually make granulated sugar from watermelon and sugar is valuable. Southern families tied up watermelon in linen bed sheets and allowed the juice to drain through and granulate. That is how people got sugar when the cane fields were destroyed.

It is so brutal and dreary for Chinese farmers as China suffers from weak domestic demand which has led to sluggish sales and low prices. To make matters worse, this is also inextricably linked to spontaneity of agricultural production without guaranteeing consumption. As such, prices are slumping but farmers can't still sell these goods off.

@@oxylepy2 Not really. Only at the bottom is there anything even resembling a free market. The moment you get to any real size you need government approval pretty much constantly. And once you actually get big you become just an arm of the state in all but name. Sounds just like Fascist Italy unironically. Which is actually ironic as the Fascists viewed fascism as what came after communism is proven a failed idea.

Economics 101: if people don’t have money to buy food (watermelons) then the powers running the show simply raise the watermelon prices to compensate for your losses or any other products. The consumer never wins or gets a break. The globalists Agenda is just that global controls over monies, food, jobs, freedoms heavily constrained for people & only if you are stellar social scored citizen. The infraction list are to numerous to comprehend. With 2/3 of the population eradicated via many venues. You cannot stop what’s coming, just enjoy your days remaining as best able. "People in China are complaining of escalating food prices"...no one in China is complaining of this. China is in a deflation mode. Food prices are plummeting. People are complaining of not having jobs and money to buy even cheap priced foods...you have it totally 100% wrong. Video never claimed what you state and the main issue is speculators entering a market that is already saturated with too many watermelons. Did you even watch the video?? It spoke about how there is no national market data like in the US that farmers can reference to know market demand, supply etc...then the video detailed how the US and Japan regulate their markets to protect farmers which China does not do.

The problem is the whole ecomony is failing in China with huge unemployment problems. So one person sees someone making money doing something, and now you have 1000's stores or people selling the same thing or idea and basically flooding the market with way to many goods that you cannot sell. In the USA this is sort of protected by your city council and the permit system. For example we had a Super Walmart that wanted to go right next to a mall and the city said no way. There already was a Walmart store 8 miles away, and people can go there.

Hence why gov will pay farmers not to grow crops as having that extra screws up the price gouge for them 😂🎉❤

Some people find it contradictory that watermelons are difficult to sell despite their high prices. Let me explain the reasons behind this. First, watermelons are challenging to transport and preserve. They are highly prone to damage during transportation, and once ripe, their shelf life is very short. Second, consider the sales channels: if you are a supermarket owner selling watermelons with a short shelf life and high transportation costs, raising prices to maintain profit is the most natural choice. Third, in most regions of China, watermelon prices are so low that farmers are reluctant to transport them to cities and sell them at a discount. The transportation costs might exceed the sales revenue. Instead of letting the watermelons rot in the fields, farmers prefer to feed them to pigs. Finally, high-quality watermelons are actually not cheap in cities. The famous 8424 variety can cost between $10 and $20 each. In conclusion, what you find hard to understand is not necessarily unreasonable; it’s your perception and biases that prevent you from knowing the reasons behind it.

You speak from ignorance. You don't know the way the market changed, the time from initial investment to harvest, the availability of reliable info. The import export data alone would suggest that watermelons would have been a decent investment. So quick to criticize while knowing nothing either of fruit farming or the dynamics facing these real farmers.

That's why futures exist. Too bad China isn't as sophisticated. You know you can sell contracts for your crops at a fixed price so you don't get hosed when the demand goes down. The contract holder takes on the risk and speculate. It is so backwards to grow crop and "hope" the price will stay the way it is by the time they're ready.
