30 miles west of Greenfield in Monterey County California, via Arroyo Seco and Carmel Valley Road, is an entrance into Los Padres National Forest via Tassajara Road. Beyond Jamesburg, Tassajara Road is unpaved and at the Los Padres National Forest boundary becomes a USFS road. From Jamesburg, the road climbs some 2,600 feet to an elevation of 4,300 feet at the USFS China Camp Campground entrance, some 7+ miles distant. The campground itself is about 100 feet below the entrance and consists of 10 camping spots each suitable for at least one vehicle (bearing in mind that four wheel drive is recommended for access to Tassajara Road beyond Jamesburg).
We booked ahead at Recreation.gov and paid $20 per night for our spot, with a single vehicle. Fees may be paid on-site for unreserved stays, which are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

We visited mid-week in the middle of June and had the entire campsite to ourselves.
The campsite itself is primitive, with no water or electricity. There are two vault-style toilets. The camp is surrounded by ancient Oak trees which provide plenty of welcome shade (though not helpful for solar power!)
Bears have been spotted in the area, and (in June at least) remember to bring plenty of bug spray (you're in a forest!)
Tassajara Road terminates at the Tassajara Mountain Zen Center and hot springs, some 13+ miles distant from Jamesburg.

Mount Junipero Serra is clearly visible in the view southwest from the China Camp entrance, across the Ventana Wilderness. To the west are panoramic views across the valley formed by the Miller Fork of the Carmel River.
We stayed in and would recommend camp spot #5 out of the 10 camping spots at the campground.

Heading up this way in the next week and I'm very excited! From locals I've heard my bud's f150 will probably do okay but we also have a rubicon with AWD that'll help up if we need to leave one of the cars behind before the dirt. Looks amazing!

Thanks for watching and commenting! The dirt road is pretty well graded so you’ll probably be fine. I think the only thing that would give me pause would be wet conditions but I think it’s forecast to be dry for the next couple of weeks. Have fun up there, we did!

make sure you have a full tank I have a little 1996 V6 Acura sedan that I take up there all the time no problems, so if you have any kind of suv, truck, you'll be fiine I take the sedan because I live far and it's 2 hours of freeway and just like 30 mins of mountain sunrise at this spot is gorgeous, this is facing east 6:59

I grew up in the small farm town of Greenfield. I’ve never heard of this place, definitely going to take a trip 👍🏼 thank you for posting this. Fort Hunter Liggett has some awesome spots way back into Los Padres as well check it out sometime.

Thanks for watching & commenting! We want to get into Los Padres back in FHL too, but I think a lot of it might still be closed after the Dolan fire and subsequent mud slides?

@@fourwheeltravel You’re right about that Dolan Fire but I don’t think all campsites got shut down. I might be wrong but hopefully Mother Nature can recover. Take care!

Awesome man great video! Did you see any deer or signs of them while you were out there?

Thanks for watching and commenting! We were not specifically looking for deer when we were out there, but the location is remote enough that I am sure there's all kinds of wildlife out there.

That’s beautiful country and a nice Wagon too. I’d love to venture down that way from Oregon someday.

Were campfires allowed during your trip? Were there any amenities, i.e., BEAR BOXES (I think I saw one), water, toilets, etc? Those sorts of details are helpful and go hand in hand with this kind of video. I'm certain our 2020 Honda Passport AWD (non-stock tires) will easily make that trek.

The best resource for this campsite is the recreation.gov site: www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/273878 When we visited, signage indicated that camp fires were allowed in the designated fire rings; however, we were not sure about that (sensitive as we are to the wildfire conditions in this area) and we used a propane stove. Again, the above referenced site is the place to get up to date info. Thanks for the feedback on the video. I've been thinking about clearer categorization of the various aspects of each track and have something in the works for that. As far as this track goes, in the dry season, I am sure an SUV could make the drive with no problems. In the wet season, the track is impassable and I would not attempt even in the Power Wagon. Steve

You'd have no problem in the 2WD Taco in the summer. In the winter, I probably wouldn't try in the Power Wagon. :)

@@fourwheeltravel i go to the desert in the cooler months. real nice. 👍👍👍.
